canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Where to go for max profit? High coder salary, low cost of living
I only have experience with Eastern Canada (aka Southern Ontario, Montreal, and the Maritimes), but the only way that I've seen where you'd get a high salary and low cost of living is if you can get Torontoesque salary with a company based in rural areas (which in IT I've found is anything outside of the GTA, K-W, Ottawa, and Montreal...possibly Halifax). They're incredibly rare (I've found two in the 13 years that I've been in the industry), and if the company does go under you're pretty much forced to move to a place where there's high salaries (because there's high competition for talent, natch), and high cost of living (because everyone's moving there...again, obvious I know), as telecommuting opportunities in Canada are practically non-existent. Usually if a place has a low cost of living/low housing costs/etc...., it's because the unemployment rate is ~15% or so, and the IT work is something around 35-40k a year.

tl;dr If you're looking in Canada, you're looking a LONG time.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Where to go for max profit? High coder salary, low cost of living
There isn't, but it is quite strongly (looking for remote opportunities since 2009)
canadiancreed··on Top Sites Built with Ruby on Rails
Possible interfacing with ancient legacy datasources? Only one I could think of. Well that and the head honchos hadn't followed tech since the digital storage mediums for medical data was Access and Excel, and Java was considered "new".
canadiancreed··on SOPA died in 2012, but Obama administration wants to revive part of it
Gives a good reason to remove term limits; keeps folks from proposing silly things like this, knowing that they won't be held accountable by the electorate as they can't run after their term is up.

Of course that takes an informed electorate, which...well that's another topic entirely.

canadiancreed··on New Zealand's GCSB spying bill becomes law
I'm sure anti virus makers will be happy about the lowering of sales in the NZ marketplace....and the increase in virus proliferation soon afterwards. Could the government get sued for that? :D
canadiancreed··on SOPA died in 2012, but Obama administration wants to revive part of it
This guy seems to be trying his damnest to piss away what good will he had at replacing an administration that was derided for pretty much the same actions.

canadiancreed··on Average Income per Programming Language
Supply and demand and perception is pretty much what it boils down too. There's a lot of PHP apps, and a lot of terribly written PHP apps. Add that companies that hire for such positions have a plethora of options for cost-effective (read dirt cheap) and a lot of developers that will work for such wages and you have a language that while popular, is not well respected, and has those looking for more money and a more versatile skill set seeking greener pastures.
canadiancreed··on Average Income per Programming Language
I second this. Have a mate of mine that has five years in C and has been able to walk into any shop that he wants, regardless of language they use, and get a gig, and well paying to boot.

On the other end of the scale, I have almost six years in PHP and it's worth as much as a broken kinder egg for anything outside the LAMP stack world (and in some cases, within that world as well)

canadiancreed··on Average Income per Programming Language
If that's what they're trying to convey, they're incredibly erroneous unless they're doing US centric (or Silicon Valley/Boston/New York only)
canadiancreed··on Average Income per Programming Language
Geeze I need to move there....somehow.
canadiancreed··on Average Income per Programming Language
I'll second this. I've yet to ever see any PHP job short of architect paying that amount here (most are 70k or less), same with Java and Perl. I'd like to know where this was collected from....I need to move there.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part about finding a new job in tech?
- Useless HR droids that know nothing about the industry, yet are somehow qualified to filter resumes based upon useless things such as the amount of jobs per year, or if you have x years of skill at y tech (even if x years is greater then y tech has even existed)

- Recruiters that are almost stalker like to get your resume....and then disappear into the ether.

- Companies/recuriters that constantly are looking for employees for months at a time, yet won't budge on requirements, salary, or working conditions. Found this especially in the maritime provinces, but it does come up in larger markets as well.

- Lack of communication. I get that some places are pretty busy, but at least a simple "hey if you hear nothing by x time, you probably didn't make the cut", or feedback after an interview to say "hey you didn't make the cut, this is the reason(s) why". We're (mostly) adults, and having a timetable and constructive analysis is always handy. Plus you never know, you could be hiring again, always good to leave potential future employees with a good memory of you. :)

- Saying one thing during interviews, then completely another if you get a job offer. Like say, twenty thousand less a year, or remote work is not allowed even thought every other developer in the company is working off-site.

- Over interviewing. Unless your'e applying for a C level position, or leading a large team at a megacorp, one interview is all you need. Having a three hour grill session for an intermediate developer position only to be told that there's more interviews after this is wasted effort. You're hiring a developer, not the next CEO of IBM.

- Remote work is verbotin. This is probably just mine, but have found that employers that I qualify for, react to an inquiry of being able to telecommute akin to a first date after saying you have syphilis.

- Finding a great job, in a tech you want to use, in an industry you'd be very interested in, that pays well and has great benefits, only to find that you don't have the right citizenship. (Happens all the time with me when I search for remote gigs. Tons of work out there.....if you're American)

As you can tell, I've been looking around for a while :)

canadiancreed··on Hours until NZ spy law passed. Contact your MP.
I seem to recall Canada either is debating or already has similar legislation in place (memory fails me sadly). Although we do definitely have lots of wide open space, mainly because it's either arctic desert, bare rock, or is below freezing for six months of the year (or more)
canadiancreed··on Hours until NZ spy law passed. Contact your MP.
Ah the "I'm right and will not listen to anything that contradicts my view!" type. How the hell do such people get anything other then heaping helpings of scorn?
canadiancreed··on Facebook use 'makes people feel worse about themselves'
Personally I publish both the good and bad sides to things going on around me, mainly because I don't believe in whitewashing how things are, and also because I use it to keep in contact with family and friends that are of a distance away.

What I've found is that if there's a stretch where there's a lot of bad news, people will just tune you out, where comments dwindle and activity lessens even when that trend has reversed itself. In my incredibly small and unscientific sample size, it seemed that with negative news, there was a greater chance for people to "tune out", while people I knew that did the "everything is awesome" timelines would have higher then average interaction.

Thought it was interesting at least. I wonder if would be reproducible, or if it's just a weird quirk for the people that I know on there.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
"Why would you go ask a consulate when this info has been on the web for ages."

Well my thinking at the time was because I found their website (at the time) to be a maze of legaleze and the consulate was two blocks away from my current workplace, while the closest embassy is a five hour drive away.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: VM Server options for BSD based operating systems
Shoot I was afraid of that. Last time I looked into it was back in FreeBSD 6.2/7 and outside of jails (which I found primitive) there wasn't anything else.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
If I had to pick just one, this posting wouldn't have been made, because I can already get that here.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
Your'e preaching to the choir on that one. The amount of companies I've seen posting the same job over and over again up here because they aren't in a major market and won't accept remote developers makes you wonder about their business processes....or if they're still thinking business computing is stuck in the 1980's.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
Ya the H1B has pretty much been crossed off my list for those reasons. I think I looked into the Green card lotto, and if I recall right being from Canada, I'm at the back of the bus on that, but I'll have to look into it again.

As for family/friends, I get where your'e coming from on that. I learned it quickly when I lived out in Charlottetown, PEI for a few years. That being said, I have a decent base of friends in the US, mainly in the Philadelphia area which is where I've been mostly looking for work (most PA companies usually find my resume in their inbox soon after posting if I have the qualifications).

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
Thanks for the links, they're pretty much what I was after. Although this line here...

"Typically, you must have at least a Bachelor's degree."

...has me concerned that I'm pretty much screwed (one of those self taught programmers, no college....silly me). I'll see with the consulate this week if computer based positions fall into that requirement this week.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Advice for Canadian looking to move to US for IT work
Tried that for the last few years. Most remote places are A) Based in the US and b) have the cavaet of "Remote....if you're in the US" as part of their job ad. There are exceptions (deviantart instantly comes to mind), but they are uncommon, and remote positions from Canadian based companies are as rare as hen's teeth.
canadiancreed··on Judge to serve 28 years after making $2 million sending children to jail
When I first heard about this, I was thinking that it happened in a third world country. After reading that it occured in Pennsylvania....I'm just amazed, disgusted, and furious. Hopefully Harrisburg does a long cleanup of that section of the state's court system, that civil suit crushes those responsible for this, and the bastards that profited from such a bastardization of justice serve the entire sentence out in a Hell on earth.

canadiancreed··on How YouPorn Uses Redis: SFW Edition
I've found in my job searching over the last few years that if you have a resume with good ruby chops, Montreal is the place to go. Seems to have the largest share of jobs in that area, at least from what I've seen.
canadiancreed··on How YouPorn Uses Redis: SFW Edition
Finding the same thing here in Toronto, to the point of where I've seen two perl developer positions advertised here since I came back in early '12. Meanwhile there's tons of (usually poorly paying) PHP gigs, along with Java, and to a slightly lesser extent, C, C# and mobile. That being said, I found the two Perl places to be very accepting of those that didn't have experience in Perl, but in other languages (and wanted to escape to something better). Can't say the same for other language shops.

tl;dr Perl devs seem to be in short supply country wide, along with jobs that would need their skillset.

Guess relations between Russia and the US aren't as important after all.

Always found it odd (possibly ironic?) that he left to countries infamous for not being well known for their love of free speech. Then again as one poster here put it, where else would he go that isn't as restrictive and doesn't have an extradition treaty with the U.S.?

Wonder if this will inspire whistle blowers in Russia now?
