canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2017)
Met a few people from CHOP a few years ago during a conference, made me wish I could work in the US as I was pretty impressed by both the staff and the place

Sounds like a large retailer that wanted the same for an interview. The job I found out later went to a kid of one of the managers.

That they declared bankruptcy this year has been a tasty bit of schadenfreude.

From my brief interaction, I';d be amazed if they were aware of the concept of QA

I had something similar where they had a test app online, but the test environment was broken to the point of it being non usable. Emailed them as to what was broken including error messages. Got an email cancelling my interview twenty minutes later.

They're pretty rampant in Canada. You usually get one of these types:

- Long home coding challenge (for no pay of course) - Hours of whiteboard coding talk. If you're lucky it relates to the job at hand, most of the time it doesn't - Doing coding tests online, either through their propitiatory app or through sites like HackerRank. - A conversation type interview, where you talk about the job (have only had this one in my recent attempt. Didn't get past that phase)

Of the roughly 30 interviews that I've done in the last ten weeks, only one place ever asked about my github profile (which I don't have yet, currently revamping it since most of the code was years old and pretty meh). Almost every one of them had questions about my linkedin profile though.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: How does your company do performance reviews?
Have had two since I started at the place I'm at now. It's basically very nebulous "you're doing ok/you're not doing well in x" type reviews that they get from the departments you're contracted out too. Recommendations are usually "keep doing what you're doing/do more work/do work faster". You provide feedback forms for how you feel youre doing in various areas, but they're effectively useless as its the managers rebuttal that holds all the weight. There's rumours of career planning being integrated into the mix, but that's apparently been on the table for years with no change.

Had an associate of mine at the same company two weeks ago get a performance review (more of a contract since he had to sign it), that said he had to improve performance in a month or he'd be fired. The reasons? Too slow/too low quality, but no specific measurable metrics to meet that he'd be able to use to keep his job when re-evaluation comes up in a month.

Needless to say, performance evaluations aren't given a lot of thought here. Wish they were.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2017)
Are all of the listed positions available for remote applicants?
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2017)
If I knew anything more then university level C I'd so apply. That's a crazy place to find a dev shop!
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2017)
Well now! This looks very cool as a fan.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2017)
The housing is probably the lowest you'll find in a large city in Canada, but the taxes are some of the highest so it evens out. 95k in Montreal should go furthur the it would in Toronto or Vancouver.
canadiancreed··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
I keep hearing that I can work anywhere as a developer. I wish employers would get that message. I've had to move to expensive cities not because I want too (the exact opposite actually), but because if I don't I don't get work. Employers in Canada are hostile to remote for the most part, and working for companies outside of this country, you run into a lot of "remote....but not for you"
canadiancreed··on Mathematics for Computer Science [pdf]
You're not the only one. Only course that I took that I crashed and burned on.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2016)
NOt really. From my experience six figures needs senior/lead experience, an uncommon tech stack, and being in Toronto. If you want six figures and are a Canadian developer, you usually look to moving too or working remotely for an American company.

Being unable to create accounts to even submit resumes doesn't help either.
canadiancreed··on I am Peter Roberts, an immigration lawyer who does work for YC and startups. AMA
As someone that went down the experience route instead of degree, I'd strongly second this advice. Without it, you're effectively locked out of the US barring a radical loosing of their immigration laws.
canadiancreed··on I am Peter Roberts, an immigration lawyer who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I'm not a lawyer, but as someone that is in a similar boat degree wise, my experience has been that the chances are next to none, and have been told more then once in the last few years that any sort of related degree will help get over the hump that is immigration over just having experience.

canadiancreed··on I am Peter Roberts, an immigration lawyer who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I'm not a lawyer, but as a Canadian that does not have a degree in Comp Sci and has been looking for work in the United States since 2006, I'd like to share my experience.

In a nutshell, I've been told time and again that having a degree will help, although how much one that isn't related to your discipline may not be worth much more then the paper it's printed on. To give my experience, I've been told by multiple companies within the last year that it's basically no Comp Sci (or equivalent two year college course), no chance. Your degree in an unrelated field might help a bit, but I wouldn't put much weight in it when it comes to immigration VISA time.
