calsy··on All you may need is HTML
Because reading words requires substantial styling enhancements over what the browser is already capable of? Has anyone picked up a book lately?

You need a UI team to create a page of readable text? That sounds like an expensive waste.

But it sounds like those 'UI' people think they know better and don't need suggestions from programmers about reading words, even though its what they do all day.

Aesthetics are more important than content?? Where did you get that idea from?

Political philosophy? Different cultures approach life in different ways. Where’s the politics in that?

Families sleeping together is the the absolute opposite of post modern.

Letting a baby cry out for its parents while it’s alone is a ‘good thing’ makes no intuitive sense. Feeding babies with bottles became normal for some reason until we understood that it was more for the benefit of the companies selling formula and decided ‘gasp’ breastfeeding might be preferred.

You keep your individualism? It’s the only thing you know, you have no idea what life is like otherwise. You just assume the culture you live in is the best version of how to do things.

And I'm sure the kids still remained with their parents at night. Through all of our known history across all cultures families have slept together. It is only in the past few centuries that European wealth and individualism changed that.

So why is this the 'better' option? What is the benefit from separating a child from their parents at night? More likely it just how our parents did it and everyone else does it so we inherently think its the best way.

What we think to be normal or right is in fact the complete opposite that based on our known history.

calsy··on Van Life in Japan
Those days, most of the world lives like this now. Intimacy when you have kids is not the highest priority that overrides everything. Im not saying its not important, just that you don't make life choices based on if we 'can get it on here'. You just have to get creative thats all.

Bonding with your child and thinking about their needs becomes more important.

Ancestors? It's normal now, just not where you are. A couple of centuries ago a bunch of upper class Europeans in big homes made it a point of having separate rooms for kids as means of showing off their wealth and status, and now here we are.

You can see this history quite clearly now in the old castles Royal families live in and the obscene amount of rooms they have. Who can look after an 18 room castle? Someone with money and power, that's who.

So what part of changing the basic build blocks of family connections that have existed even before we were walking on 2 legs for a 'status symbol' makes it the better option?

Its funny we like to pretend we are smarter or 'know better now'. It couldn't be any further from the truth. We don't sleep properly, we can't eat properly, we don't exercise enough and we suffer through chronic loneliness. We are the worst examples of how human beings should live.

calsy··on Van Life in Japan
Humans have always slept in family groups. It seems like the more natural thing to do.

Likewise with nudity. Westerner's are hung up on covering themselves up in front of family members at a certain age. Many Asian cultures don't have that baggage. Bathing with family or going to a bathhouse is normal, and why wouldn't it be?

calsy··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you dislike them.
calsy··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Why is my statement any different to what a person on the street would say when a random stranger tries to interact with them? People on the street always WANT something from you. It is rarely ever for the benefit of the recipient.

Thats why 99% of people have their guard up and are not interested in random chit chat let alone making friends. Reading Dale Carnegie wont change that.

These suggestions are being thrown around as preferred alternatives to meeting people at work.

calsy··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Why get paid while your socialising with people in a work environment when you can isolate yourself at home and talk to randoms on the street or join clubs at your own expense and time. Friends can be made anywhere BUT work now apparently.

Why do kids need to go back to school? They can sit at a desk at home. They can make friends elsewhere and they don't need to go to school for physical activity. They can do that in any club, group meet, sport, hobby whatever. Schools for learning after all, not making friends.

calsy··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
What bizarro world is this?
calsy··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Dragging us back.. says it all really. The majority of companies weren't supporting remote work as a new flexible way for their employees to work. They were supporting remote work because it was the only way to get ANY work done at all during the pandemic. There is always value in face to face interaction and compartmentalising work from our personal lives.
calsy··on Weather Machine – Rock solid weather APIs with zero hassle
Around the world, weather observation and data collection is in most cases a public service provided by the government. The accessible data weather bureau's provide is also unique and country specific.
calsy··on Weather Machine – Rock solid weather APIs with zero hassle
Well theres lots of weather isn't there.
calsy··on Weather Machine – Rock solid weather APIs with zero hassle
Wrong use case. It's an API to service businesses who require 1,000,000s requests a month. Its not made for individuals who just want to check the weather.

WeatherKit and Dark Sky just mush data provided by government sources across many countries into a common format.

By making it so cumbersome to use that people won’t bother with it.
calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
I would keep going but what a waste of a day. Agree to disagree.
calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Ok so now we are going into the history of browsers, who said anything about paying for browsers. Your argument was 'why are web apps not popular on Android then', and I explained why.
calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Again, I bought GoW Ragnorok for $30 cheaper than the digital store ($99 in store, $129 on PSN). Same for most new releases, the PSN store is always overpriced. Same with xbox.

Now we are talking sale of physical items on Amazon. Amazon is popular, doesn’t mean it has no competition. I can easily buy things on eBay, or Walmart or any number of big chain stores. Amazon isn’t the most popular online store where I live, eBay is. Kindle has lock in aswell, side loading is not convenient. most people wouldn’t know what it is. There are however many alternative ebook stores and many people do sell directly from a personal website cheaper.

Many companies do sell their products on their own sites, Music can can be bought from alternative websites. Unlike the App Store, there is no rule that says these items must be sold from a single source.

I do not understand where you're going with all this? Are these continually changing arguments meant to justify Apple locking out competition that allows them to freely set their own pricing? That no one would use alternatives anyway? That it's no different from retail?

calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
I’m not aware of any proof this is the case. Regardless of platform, what business is going to invest the time and money required to make a competing platform for app delivery on mobile that rivals the current stores? Both Google and Apple can shutdown you down in an instant if they were to consider you a competitive threat. Why bother?
calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Are browsers the same as app stores? Are browsers designed to search for vetted web apps and provide an environment for them to run without the browser bulk? Are browsers designed for ease of purchase? Are alternative browsers supposed to be competition for app stores?
calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Just because Android devices can allow for alternative stores, doesn't mean in anyway that it's easy to setup, nor is it simple to write software in the limited sandbox provided that needs to work independently of Google services. This is all by design.

So, how successful do you think a store would be if its made difficult to install and difficult to create software for? Is it any surprise there are no successful profitable apps?

calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Again you are comparing the real world with digital. Are companies manufacturing software from sourced resources, excluding people and labour? Is Apple physically distributing software in trucks to stores across the country. No, none of this applies to digital content hosted on digital stores.

You would think digital content would be cheaper, as it is not bound by real world restraints. It can be duplicated easily, moved quickly and made available at anytime to any person with a connect device.

Apple sets its own mark up of 30%, they can do this through anti-competitive practice of limiting sales to their store only. If companies where able to host their own digital stores and sell their own digital products, Apple could not afford to mark up to 30% on sales because no one would buy anything at the inflated prices on their store.

calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
So you complete changed the argument from retail to wholesale. That licensing fee applies to digital and physical copies so why is it relevant?

Retail is a physical space, rent applies to properties in the real world. Rent does not apply to near infinite digital spaces run by a single company.

It was cheaper to purchase in store than on the digital store, why is that? Is it because platforms only allow a single store to be available on their devices, their own. Imagine if there were competing stores? Im sure that 'rent' price would disappear really quick.

calsy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
Every retail store sales at price higher than retail? Do they now... I just bought GoW Ragnorok at retail $30 cheaper than its listing on the PSN Store. This is the same for most new release titles, retail is cheaper.

Besides, you can't compare the real world with digital. The real world isn't a near infinite space with millions of items are available in a single place for everyone in the country with a connected device to view and purchase.

calsy··on "The Social Network" synth sounds
What makes this cutting edge, easy to find music from 2011 more interesting? I get it, opinions.
calsy··on "The Social Network" synth sounds
Sure its an opinion, but just saying it's random presents without proof of that and that it's easier to find more atmospheric, nuanced and better produced songs without providing any is rather meaningless.

What is minimal about it? Clearly there are quite a number of layered tracks combining synth and tradition instruments intended for a soundtrack to a movie. The only thing techno about it is the beat.
