calmbonsai··on Taking a walk may lead to more creativity than sitting, study finds (2014)
Truth. Nothing is a greater spurn to creativity (cyclic mental exertion) than time away focusing on cyclic bodily exertion.
calmbonsai··on I’m writing again
To clarify, I simply made a (minor) recall mistake on a website's comment section which was rapidly (within 1 hour) corrected. There is no legal tort case for fraud or defamation given the (minor) inaccuracy and lack of redressable harm or injury.

Mr. Cringely, on the other hand, overtly lied (for years in widely published writings, videos, and in public corporate filings) about having a PHD which is legitimately even worse than lying about having an MS.

calmbonsai··on I’m writing again
Thanks for your research and correction of my error.
calmbonsai··on I’m writing again
Projects fail all the time. It happens.

It’s simply inexcusable (and criminally fraudulent in many jurisdictions) to lie about your academic credentials—especially when it involves other people’s money.

calmbonsai··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
no
calmbonsai··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
Try Terraform or CDK. I like Terraform scales better, but there are some real foot-gun gotchas with it. You do need "depends_on" https://developer.hashicorp.com/terraform/language/meta-argu... for efficient large-scale deployments and certain networking situations, it's also really awkward with high-level AWS abstractions such as Organizations, but otherwise solid tech.

CDK (atm) as limitations and it's also got a more imperative model. It's touted as being more familiar as it has multiple language support, but I don't think shoehorning declarative context into imperative languages works well.

calmbonsai··on Google changes its search box
I don't care. Aside from a single dormant GMail account I keep solely for "parental tech support", I de-Googled 5 years ago and strongly encourage everyone to do likewise.

Google stopped being a customer-focused company after their 2nd major revision to GOffice and the PM shake-up in search from Raghavan https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/ .

calmbonsai··on Unknowable Math Can Help Hide Secrets
You are correct. I suspect Quanta just needed some sort of "math filler".
calmbonsai··on Travelers on Air Force One ordered to throw away gifts, phones after China trip
Why did his non-news published by this perpetual rag make the front page?! Nuclear down-voting this.
calmbonsai··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
The AWS UI should be, effectively, read-only for any infrastructure aside from setting up some initial roles and perms to manage all of it through an IAC system.

Put more bluntly, if you're using the AWS Console to spin-up/spin-down service instances you're doing it wrong.

calmbonsai··on First Tesla Semi Rolls Off High-Volume Production Line
Uh...does Electrek.co not do basic math or understand how factories (and markets) are valued? This is waaaay too early to judge anything.

The "milestone that matters" is $/defect/volume. Until this factory has measurable volume and measurable costs for defects on that volume, it's not an actual factory.

calmbonsai··on Breaking Up with WordPress After Two Decades
What is "compounding" software?
calmbonsai··on [dead]
Agreed. This seems like an "institute publishing" re-hash purely for marketing purposes. I see nothing novel in the paper.
calmbonsai··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
WJW. I can not believe Anthropic's response.

Just refuse to pay any bill from any vendor that by their own public admission) is a "incorrect bill".

This isn't just about PR and technicalities, this is Business 101.

calmbonsai··on An update on recent Claude Code quality reports
Move really fast and break all the things. Yeah, these guys are reminding me of the 20-teens where AWS started pushing out rando edge-case services with little regard to quality or integration that ended up hurting the quality of the core services too.
calmbonsai··on We accepted surveillance as default
There's also the issues of geo-fenced warrants and the FISA courts in the U.S.

Warrant processes and issuance should not be secret nor generic enough to allow for "blanket" hoovering of Personally Identifiable Information.

calmbonsai··on PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a 'weakness' in address to Canadians
Good. Many Canadians view Carney as a "war-time" PM and I think that's accurate.

The Trump administration has treated Canada and Canadians appallingly. It will take many years and another President, but I hope the U.S. can repair relations. The onus is on us.

Canada honored its commitments. The U.S. started this stupid trade war.

calmbonsai··on NASA Force
This, THIS is how any org signals they don't have a budget. Build a "fancy" high-concept paper-thin-veneer website that's adjacent of their extant canonical DNS.

Also, it really, really doesn't help that they're attempting to riff off of the "Space Force" BS.

FWIW, the NRO https://www.nro.gov/ has been the actual "space force" for over half a century.

calmbonsai··on YouTube users get option to set their Shorts time limit to zero minutes
Not related to many prior posts on HN, The Verge is not to be trusted with technical FAANG editorial content. They're either ignorant, stupid, or "playing stupid" due to prior "pay for play", under the table, and/or blatant advertiser-conflicting arrangements.

Also not related to prior YT posts. The secret to sanity with YT content is to never consume it on YT. FreeTube, yt-dlp, etc. are your friends.

calmbonsai··on Don't feel like exercising? Maybe it's the wrong time of day for you
Figure out what "works" for you and DO IT! Just an hour a day of focused physical exertion will change your life.
calmbonsai··on Don't feel like exercising? Maybe it's the wrong time of day for you
Truth. The gym (and consequentially) lifting, running, sweating, and generally using your body to accomplish goals (and setting new ones) becomes reflexive and habitual.

I used to hang-out at the bar between flights in an airport. Now, I walk the concourse and climb stairs.

calmbonsai··on I wrote to Flock's privacy contact to opt out of their domestic spying program
Per my understanding of the law for these sorts of data collectors, at least in the U.S., you need to contact the local municipalities (Flock's customers) for this redaction and the jurisprudence is governed at the state and municipal level.

The best source of this information is https://deflock.org/ . FWIW, this is run by a neighbor in Boulder, CO which has been wrestling with the use of these cameras.

calmbonsai··on A soft robot has no problem moving with no motor and no gears
These phase transition motive architectures all suffer from the same issues of not enough precision with repeatable positioning, very low speed, and limited control over the shaping of force/torque curve.

The only practical example are wax motors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax_motor

This entire article is simply bad university lab PR.

calmbonsai··on Backblaze has stopped backing up OneDrive and Dropbox folders and maybe others
WJW. This sort of blanket policy change should be called-out in ALL CAPS, bold-faced, and underlined as it changes one of the implicit assumptions with the service's execution.

The technical and performance implications of backing-up cloud mount-points are real, but that's zero excuse for the way this change was communicated.

This is a royal screw-up in corporate communications and I would not be surprised if it makes a huge negative impact in their bottom line and results in a few terminations.

calmbonsai··on DIY Soft Drinks
Yes! Also his book "Fix the Pumps" https://a.co/d/0intXOn1 which has a bizarre title and cover art, but is right up there with "Liquid Intelligence" for traditional sodas.
calmbonsai··on Filing the corners off my MacBooks
Hey man, you keep doing you and let the haters wash off your shoulders. I'm left-handed and remove the pocket clip from all of my knives.

The power to personalize should not be underestimated--even at the cost of durability and overall functionality.

calmbonsai··on The FAA’s flight restriction for drones is an attempt to criminalize filming ICE
You don't, but legal precedent errs on the side of transparency and anyone who's flying a drone (legally) in an urban environment in the U.S. already has FAA permitting.
calmbonsai··on Apple says no one using Lockdown Mode has been hacked with spyware
Yep. It's business as usual for that rag.
