callalex··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
Does this include the emissions portal-to-portal? Airports tend to be nowhere near destinations because people don’t like living near all the pollution airplanes spew.
callalex··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
That’s only 25 mpg which is widely considered to be unacceptably unsustainable even in the short term.
callalex··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
Burning fossil fuels is the problem. We can argue until the cows come home about things like plastic straws and bags, but the fact is that burning fossil fuels is rapidly destroying the planet and no amount of burning is sustainable. Banning that is table stakes.
callalex··on Replacing Liquid Metal on an Asus Zephyrus G15's CPU
Is that on Linux or windows?
callalex··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
Then what is Google paying others for?
callalex··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
The status quo in fact encourages going back to the toolbar-infested days of yore. The only way to use a non-bribe-paying search engine in Safari is to install a browser extension with access to every webpage. There are standards that work just fine for switching search engines without any extensions or toolbars but Apple explicitly rejects those standards.
callalex··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
Which store can I buy these de-google’d phones at with support? Also your second statement is just factually incorrect.
callalex··on How the electricity markets respond to a nuclear trip
By this definition all reserve capacity is wasted money. That is clearly false, as demonstrated by the event in this article _not_ leading to failure and harm.
callalex··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
Russian imports/exports are much more restricted now than 4 years ago.
callalex··on LG and Samsung are making TV screens disappear
Instead they solved it much more elegantly by just live-processing the video to re-aim your pupils. They’ve been doing it for years and most people don’t even know it which is how you know they did a great job. I’ve never noticed it looking creepy or artifact-y.
callalex··on Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less
When describing infrastructure, words matter. When you describe something as “hyper critical infrastructure” it implies that tens to thousands of human beings will die within seconds of failure of said “hyper critical” infrastructure. The way the rest of your comment is worded implies that’s not what you’re actually describing and makes the words “hyper critical infrastructure” irresponsible for you to use.

I don’t mean to imply there is some kind of failure magnitude competition, I just want to reinforce that software “engineering” already has a huge problem with abject neglect of the learnings that other sign-and-stamp engineering fields have already learned from and fixed. Us code slingers are not in uncharted territory, we just need to learn from our predecessors and peers that build literal bridges and towers and force management to treat our field in the same way.

If something that triggers a pager takes months to resolve you already work at an organization that is so ossified it will be unwilling to adopt a random bandaid startup product like this.
callalex··on Courts Close the Loophole Letting the Feds Search Your Phone at the Border
Or within 100 miles of an airport, which means pretty much everywhere is the border. It’s insane.
callalex··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
Well, that stupid government isn’t “allowed” to import chips either. How has that materially changed anything? (Please use specific examples.)
callalex··on A chemist explains the chemistry behind decaf coffee
Why are there no GMO decaf bean varieties? Is the caffeine really that necessary for pest control even when cultivated/farmed?
callalex··on Anyone can access deleted and private repository data on GitHub
No, it really isn’t. Anyone who uses that word that way is just factually incorrect, and probably pretty irresponsible depending on the context. Software should not tell lies.
callalex··on A free tool to quickly detect counterfeit flash (2017)
How do you find such things? In person or online somewhere?
callalex··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
But will that still be true in 6-12 months when the bubble pops?
callalex··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
I’ll be sure to tell that to my landlord.
callalex··on Scientists discover a new hormone that can build strong bones in mice
It’s really not indicative of much at all. They also spout off about artificial sweeteners despite a complete lack of scientific evidence. It’s a political organization, not a scientific one.
callalex··on Kawaii – A Keychain-Sized Nintendo Wii
The game boy got almost 30hours out of 4xAA whereas the game gear got about an hour or two of life out of 6xAA. I hated that about the game gear and it meant I hardly ever got to play it.
callalex··on How much money we can raise for transparently idiotic startups?
WhatsApp
callalex··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
What does “our computer” mean when it is not owned by you, but issued to you to perform a task with by your employer? Does that also apply to the operator at a switchboard in a nuclear missile launch facility?
callalex··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Give it like, a week before bothering to ask such questions...
callalex··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Why put effort in engineering when you can just fear monger in marketing and buy politicians in sales?
callalex··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Not at all like insurance, because they don’t have to pay out at all when things go wrong.
callalex··on TinyPod – Apple Watch case with scroll wheel
I’m unable to scroll this website on a stock iPhone running the latest software. It just says “Say Hello to tinyPod”. Why do people think it’s ok to hijack scrolling? You’re never going to get it right and now I have no idea what your product is even though I’m the exact target audience.
callalex··on Jailbreaking RabbitOS
Because hundreds of billions of dollars are being poured into this industry, and this seems to be the best result we’ve gotten for all that money.
callalex··on Jailbreaking RabbitOS
I hope it’s presenting him with facts instead of made up history badly regurgitated from troll Reddit posts…
callalex··on Jailbreaking RabbitOS
It’s also pretty reasonable to respect the GPL when you financially benefit from it, yet here we are.
