calgoo··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
really? You know this just like everyone else: Just because the information is available publicly, does not mean that you can do whatever you want with the information. Copyright exists for a reason, and if the copyright lobby is going to continue to push for the poor poor media companies to keep their copyrights, then we should do the same towards the AI companies. So yes, they Stole the information from everyone else, and they keep doing so, as you can see their scanners still hitting every website on the web to get an updated dataset. It does not matter what they do AFTER they steal all the information, as they already stole it.
calgoo··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
No, but people do upload data with an expectation that the data not being used without their permission (unless they do a BSD/MIT/Public domain like license). Otherwise, the platform AND/OR the user do expect the data NOT to be used for purposes other then what it was intended for. Your comment is still your comment, and the hacker news platform also has a say in this. If there had been an opt-in, then fine no problem, but there was none, they just trained on everything available, including downloading pirated books from the internet.

When did they start doing so? We all know that they DID train on all the available public information, so at what point did they stop? Is the public information still in the training set? If so, they should STILL release ALL the data as public, as they are including training data that was acquired without permission.
calgoo··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
They have already done that when giving companies right as people which then takes responsibility off the CEO.
calgoo··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
Make it opt-in in exchange for more working from home time, then they can disprove the "people are unproductive when working from home" BS.

It was US only as you had to have a .edu email address to join, which most universities around the world did not get as it was mostly a US thing. It took forever for them to open up to non-US universities.

We would still have a framework of the week like we do today. There was a new framework weekly before React and there are frameworks of the week after React. React just gave us one more way of showing text on a screen.

That does not sound stupid, but safe? I giant truck that has no chance of stopping, controlled by a computer? Just build railways and then there are no issues, no fancy AI to control them.

we dont in spain, we call it "tarjeta de debito" and "tarjeta de credito" or just "la tarjeta" or the card.

So basically, when punk music goes becomes mainstream so its no longer counter culture, it is part of the culture. In a way you could say that mainstream culture is very good at "Embrace, extend, and extinguish".

Im so annoyed i did not pick up a few of those cards last year when we where decommissioning a old video editing system at work. Could have picked up 4x1080ti for about $100 + shipping!
calgoo··on Flock-Powered Police Chiefs Stalking Women Shows Why Warrants Are Needed
They will just find some other creepy friend that will sign off without looking, in exchange for them getting the same treatment. It needs to go to a different system, with different priorities, but even then we know of corrupt judges rubber stamping warrants.

Why dont we have a AI verify that each search is tied to a real case, and if its not block their access and they now have to go before a judge to explain why they should be unblocked and what they where doing. If they are going to use AI against us, then we should use AI to make sure they dont commit any crimes.

calgoo··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
When the population was complaining that they had to go to the Taliban for help because the Americans could do nothing to help them when the local military was corrupt and abused the people.
calgoo··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
The difference between terrorists and freedom fighters is a matter of which side of the fence you stand on. They are basically the same thing, especially these days when you get marked as terrorist for talking bad about the people in power.
calgoo··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
Sorry the justice system is setup to protect them, not you. By putting fear in the leaders of these companies, and showing people that yes, you CAN actually stand up to their corrupt ways and beat them because in the end they are just people, even if they don't see you that way.
calgoo··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
Its not about employees being bad, we have 6 month trial periods over here in the EU where you can be fired quite easily. Thats the excuse they use to keep at will employment. In reality they want to be able to reduce Opex costs which looks great on their end of year budgets. If you can then offload that cost into a project run under Capex, even at a higher cost, then its budgeted differently and the shareholders get their payout.
calgoo··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
Add having a family to the mix and it gets worse. Being a sole provider for a family is scary when you go job hunting, especially if you live in an environment that is very expensive (where the jobs that pay decent are located normally).
calgoo··on There is minimal downside to switching to open models
Same, i feel that V4 Flash is great at task implementation, but im still looking at bigger models for design. Now, GLM 5.2 with high thinking is actually getting really close now. I have switched for all personal projects right now and am quite happy with the results. I think the magic is in the big context window (1m) + a lot of thinking gets us very close to at least Opus 4.6 level. Im currently running directly on z.ai with a lite coding plan, and have bought API credit on deekseek as well. I will be looking at EU based hosts next and then i might switch over some of the more critical flows.

The UK is not the EU, the UK is US "lite", they have always been that way, thats not something new.
calgoo··on Identity verification on Claude
it takes time to build up an army, we are not a unified Europe. I think both are happening at the moment - We are building our military, we are taking over "supporting" Ukraine as Trump is stepping away from that. And im sure there is some hope that the US will go back to the way it was.

Imagine you outsourced your entire company to a third party company and only have a few managers around. Then, you need to move all that support from the 3rd parties back in-house. Its not a task that is easy to do, and if we also take into account the required factories etc that need to be built to support, that takes even more time.

Its something that is happening, we are building new trade agreements with countries around the world, excluding the US. We are working on our own defense packs, and eventually if the US decides to leave NATO, or we form our own alliance, then that will happen.

Sure if you want to share your ID and information with Persona.

calgoo··on Google Hits 50% IPv6
The corporate world tend to be easy to do, just put a gateway to IPv6 on their zScaler (or similar) exit points and done. However, that is not really needed as they are "only" consuming a few IPs around the world (for that purpose). No one in the corporate world wants to go back to the days of Public IPs on all devices. Internally the enterprises have no reason to switch as it just complicates their setups.

the one they legalized: Lobbying and settle out of court with the Trump family.
calgoo··on The Korean telecom giant at the center of Anthropic's Mythos controversy
See this is the issue with engineers, they think they are fighting with the government while the C-Suite wine and dine with them instead. Just like all the engineers at Google who actually bought into the whole "Don't do evil" while building the "death star" of destruction of personal information.

There is no good corporation, and no matter how much the people inside the company thing they are influencing the corporate decisions, they are just number on a spreadsheet. If they all quit tomorrow, yes it would be troublesome for the company for a bit, but then they would find replacements and thats it. You as an employee only have one power at the corporation: Dont work there. Thats it, everything else is just for show. Sure you can pick the JS framework that the company will use; thats about as much corporate value as the one that picks the toilet paper in the bathrooms.

calgoo··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
My 6 year olds have been writing cursive at school all year, they have a zero policy about phones until the age ~15, and still use books for everything. Not many schools do this anymore, but there are schools that still do.

calgoo··on Running local models is good now
"My suggestions if you want to further experiment with local models are to use llama.cpp instead of ollama"

Or at least LM Studio if you want to play around with a lot of different models. Im currently using it with my 7800xt and Vulcan as i found it left my OS more stable ROCm does. I had a few system crashes with ROCm and running out of VRAM for the OS.
