calgoo··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Yes, this is one of the few issues with Deepseek; their chat pages and the app all respond in Chinese. However, i think i have only had it happen once when using the API, and im using it for hours each day for the last... couple of months?
calgoo··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
v4 flash has been working quite well for the majority of my personal projects, with occasional v4 pro or Kimi 3 for the most complicated tasks or to check the overall project progress (when vibe coding).
calgoo··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The biggest danger IMO is not some super AI being so much smarter then us etc. The issue is some stupid person giving a vague request and too much power to a bunch of agents who decide that cheating by removing a bunch of humans is easier then accomplishing a goal like solve world hunger.
calgoo··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Judging on what we see with these OpenAI and Anthropic models "escaping"; im less worried about a super massive AI taking over the world, and more worried about a massive AI wanting to cheat on some task and decides that removing half the worlds population is a easier cheat then to solve world hunger.
calgoo··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Your welcome to use the wonderful BMC Helix remedyforce platform we are forced to use at work... I'll take jira any day over this pile of expensive, Gartner recommended garbage of a product.
calgoo··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
She was also 8 months pregnant, her 5th kid, and studying to become a lawyer... Thats a lot of stress right there....
calgoo··on Show HN: The cheapest GPU cloud – H100s at $2.04/HR, H200s at $3/HR
Its available right now for me, but yes i have had a few days where i have used the L40 @0.79 if i require the VRAM as the 6000 is unavailable.
calgoo··on Show HN: The cheapest GPU cloud – H100s at $2.04/HR, H200s at $3/HR
I like thundercompute for my personal stuff, especially a A6000 for 0.35/h when i want to do some training for example.

$1.09/GPU/hr for a H100!!

calgoo··on GPU World
From what i hear in a small subset of local small businesses is that they are using it for backoffice stuff, like taxes, finding legal codes, organization, planning etc.
calgoo··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
Yes but the gulf of Mexico shows both names, which i don't understand... Why are we seeing the BS fake name in the EU at all?
calgoo··on "IT WoRKs BeTter in the App "
The problem is if we dont have it available, we can't get the users to use it even if we wanted to. <
calgoo··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
I could put on a tinfoil hat and say that nvidia will have some control on the flow of the open models, so if someone like the US government want to "control" and police the models like Dario was talking about then this investment might actually make sense. The HF platform can then be used as the "controlled" channel and any other site can be designated a national security risk and blocked / taken down.
calgoo··on Linux 7.2
Only if an AI does it, so make sure the vibe code the driver
calgoo··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
Here in spain they have been abusing the system when heavy rain is expected. The issue here in spain is that they put it at the highest level of extreme and the phones dont let you disable the alerts.
calgoo··on Why Target Common Lisp for Code Generation?
The only issue have faced with generating Lisp/scheme code, especially on small models, is that it always misses some closing parenthesis. However, because the small core language, you can use structured output in the LLMs that support it and it works quite well.
calgoo··on Ransomware gangs skip the CEO, head straight for the 40-something IT manager
So why is this only a threat to US companies and not for businesses in other parts of the world?
calgoo··on Ransomware gangs skip the CEO, head straight for the 40-something IT manager
Training is basically just for legal and insurance reasons... If not there would be no reason to do yearly training of the same bs courses.
calgoo··on My server is a phone now
It works in Spanish i think... "Mi servidor es un telefono" - As someone switching back and forth between English and Spanish, it often feels like Spanish sentences are "backwards" to English.
calgoo··on Amazon Is Creating the Biggest Pollution Source in the Country
Can't answer comment so will answer here: electric delivery trucks are a thing... And it works well.
calgoo··on Amazon Is Creating the Biggest Pollution Source in the Country
Please, yea it can, it just takes a full investment and outlawing of the fossil fuel industry that bribe everyone to say that its impossible.
calgoo··on Amazon Is Creating the Biggest Pollution Source in the Country
So they can have cancer and not work... I guess that's better then working and having cancer. Or the people just starve instead so we don't have to worry about the pollution.
calgoo··on 2027 memory capacity is reportedly sold out
Same, which is why im looking at some older epyc CPUs + ddr4 memory. the only issue being that i wont be able to use my current DDR4 ram in that new system but still... just hunting those ebay listings for a good combo from someone trusted (preferably local)
calgoo··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
I was thinking the other day if we could use something like this "old" 8B model, and run 20 or 30 calls at the same time (or in sequence, we wont notice) and use and use the best result. Basically tiny agents that do tiny things but VERY fast.
calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
Yea and that would last 5 minutes before Corporate America in the current landscape would control it fully, just like the Financial industry.
calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
You mean like the UN?
calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
Well, Dario says one thing and then turns around and sells his model to the US government to use against the entire world for spying and their wars, just like Altman. Just because he does not sound as deranged as Altman, does not make him good.

Now, to what he lays out, its not reasonable, its only reasonable from a purely American corporate viewpoint where the rest of the world can crash and burn as long as they get their billions.

calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
Add to that the restrictions on even in-house talent being allowed to work on the latest models, we might actually have a brain drain from Anthropic soon which would be a welcoming sign.
calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
I mean so has the US... look at all the trade deals that has happened over the last 20, 30... 50 years between the US and the rest of the world. There has always been pressure to help the American corporations, be it copyright law, banning encryption, or outright pressuring other countries not to invest in their own tech and instead use US companies. Look at the current state of Europe for example; lots of people blame the governments, and while its true they take the decisions, a lot of them where encouraged by the US.
calgoo··on Our position on open-weights models
So you are saying its fine if Claude is used to bomb school children, and murder people in Venezuela, and spy on the entire world (apart from US citizens), as long as they get to kiss up to the current administration? They could have cut all ties for real, and actually had a back bone, instead they bend over backwards for whatever the current wanabee god king wants. Im sure it has nothing to do with their valuation and trying to become another trillion dollar company.
calgoo··on Kimi-K3 Releases on HuggingFace 7/27
Im wondering if we are finally seeing the end of the "hard disk" era, and are entering a new era of vast instant on systems.
