caboteria··on The beginner's guide to overcomplicating coffee
While it's certainly possible to overcomplicate things, I find that brewing a good cup of coffee in the morning is a pleasant ritual. Some amount of complexity is actually fun, although it's a different amount for different people. In that sense coffee is no different than hifi, wine, chocolate, weed, or any other sensory-driven hobby.
caboteria··on Ubuntu-minimal depends on Ubuntu-advantage-tools
I read the comment as OP threatening a mass exodus rather than claiming one was already happening. Not clear, though, so it's a valid question. I don't see a mass exodus from Ubuntu but it seems that most Docker containers these days are based on either Debian or Alpine.
caboteria··on Show HN: I made a tool that turns screenshots into dramatically angled photos
Error on the landing page:

should be "Gorgeous screenshots are just a click away...".

caboteria··on Ask HN: What are some of your “buy it for life” purchases?
I've had a pair of Hobie polarized sunglasses for around 30 years now. I bought them back in the '90's based on a recommendation from Practical Sailor magazine and they're still in great shape.
caboteria··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
> There is nothing terrible about Apple making devices my 80+ year old mother can safely and easily use.

You're right. It's also true that there's nothing terrible about making devices that Chinese dissidents can safely and easily use. Luckily there is no government that wants to limit your mom's freedom (unless she happens to be a Chinese dissident).

caboteria··on I don't understand why we throw away perfectly working things
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without!
caboteria··on My thoughts on the Framework laptop
"don't blame Framework, blame Intel" is a false dichotomy: it's OK to blame both at the same time.
caboteria··on Pouring the 200 inch disk at Corning Glass Works
I've known people who did something similar with epoxy and an LP record player, but doing it with molten glass is next-level!
caboteria··on My goal of closing 10% of Emacs bugs (2020)
When I buy a second-hand car, if there's a warning light on the instrument panel I put a piece of electrician's tape over it. Hasn't created any problems yet, but everyone feels better immediately.
caboteria··on DIY mechanical keyboard switch lets you set its actuation point
In the opposite direction: I had a keyboard once that I set aside for a couple of years and when I tried to use it again some of the keys didn't register reliably. It took a couple of days of use before everything worked smoothly.
caboteria··on 134.5 kg Concrete Bike [video]
Gentle Giant is really more of a rowing club that has a moving company. They moved our company a few years back and I've never seen anyone carry as much weight as quickly and effortlessly as those guys.
caboteria··on On a road to Prizren with a Free Software Phone
When I asked for a refund I was told that they had changed their mind and they were no longer honoring their original policies. I have the phone now and it's pretty much a paperweight. Someday I might want to play around with it but at the moment it's more of a toy and less of a phone.
caboteria··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
Sounds like another round of "you're holding it wrong" - https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-holding-it-wrong/
caboteria··on What are you supposed to do with old clothes?
L.L.Bean sells high-quality clothes, although it's an east coast brand so it might be a little dowdy for the west coast.
caboteria··on Emacs Timeline
I'm curious whether you are still an emacs user. I'm a relative emacs noob, having started using it around the turn of the century, and I can't imagine how much time I would have wasted learning the editor of the moment over and over.
caboteria··on TIFU by using Stripe as a payment processor for my small business
What would you call it if I broke into your house, stole your TV and laptop, and told you "I'm just holding them, I'll return them someday, probably 240 days from now but maybe later".
caboteria··on FTC action against Harley-Davidson and Westinghouse for limiting right to repair
Well, the article mentions Harley-Davidson, which some claim makes 2-wheeled tractors.
caboteria··on Terraform Labs Caught Moving $4.8M Through Shell Company
My daughter occasionally works for a small gift shop in Dedham, MA called "Nest". She's gotten calls from people wanting tech support for Nest thermostats.
caboteria··on Getting a vanity phone number with four consecutive digits
When I was in high school, numbers with 0 in them were the worst because of how long they took to dial using a dial phone.
caboteria··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
Anyone who hopes to someday be elderly should pay for the healthcare of the elderly.
caboteria··on Stanford prof calls cops on Berkeley prof who exposed her $5K/hr consulting fee
Looks like Professor Boaler just created an HN account.
caboteria··on Stanford prof calls cops on Berkeley prof who exposed her $5K/hr consulting fee
Not sure where you're getting $400/hour since you didn't provide any evidence but the contact is quite clear that the rate is $5000/hour:

> Provide four (4) two-hour sessions at the rate of $5,000.00 per hour for a total of $40,000

caboteria··on Sergey Brin: The Facebook phenomenon is a problem (2007)
Someone who works at a company that does things that they find despicable because they're optimizing their benefits sounds like a textbook psychopath.
caboteria··on Show HN: Oh-heck, a terminal command for when you forget other terminal commands
> But, Mike! What happens if I can't remember the oh-heck commands?

> Well, first, calm yourself, you fool. Once you've regained your composure, just type `oh-heck` into Terminal and follow the steps you numbskull.

I think that they're trying to be clever, but I prefer to not be insulted by my tools.

caboteria··on Phone number has been used too many times
By the same token I don't know why jp88 thinks it's okay to spend their time volunteering on behalf of Google. Is there some angle that I don't see or is there a subculture of people who enjoy providing free services to huge highly-profitable companies?
caboteria··on Barbed wire fences were an early DIY telephone network
My first job out of school (in the '80's) was working for a company that managed the infrastructure for state lotteries. We ran the Texas lottery and, yes, we did occasionally have point of sale terminals drop off the network when a rancher forgot to close a gate.
caboteria··on Don't allow animated favicons (2001)
I like that Mozilla doesn't have one of those auto-close bots that are so popular these days on Github.
caboteria··on PureOS 10 is Released for all Librem Products
4 years and counting for me, and my estimated shipping date (i.e., no sooner than date) is "1st Quarter 2022".

One note: according to the email they sent to crowdfunders in September, they've changed their policy back to what it was originally and will now issue refunds.

> If you would like us to go ahead with refund, we can now allocate your parts to another order and refund your Librem 5 product in accordance with the policy.

caboteria··on Bun – fast JavaScript and CSS bundler
What you describe is quite reasonable, but that's not what's happening here. If the author were doing what you describe then we wouldn't be talking about it on HN. Instead, they've gone to the trouble of building a fancy pink website and also hidden the software behind a paywall (or something, I didn't click it). Speaking only for myself, it's the combination of those two things that creeps me out.
caboteria··on Bun – fast JavaScript and CSS bundler
Turning the question around: what's so special about this one piece of software that justifies hiding it?
