cable2600··on Open source databases: What are they and why do they matter?
Commercial databases are expensive and you have to buy a license for each client. Not so with open source databases. If costs is critical use a free and open source database like PostgreSQL or MySQL.
cable2600··on Nvidia’s higher-end RTX 3000 GPUs have never been cheaper
It is a matter of affording it, and upgrading from a lesser card. Bitcoin miners bought out all of the GPUs and now that Bitcoin went bust they are selling them cheap on eBay. I am waiting for the next gen GPU to come out before I buy the RTX cards because they will be reduced in price.

$900 is the price for an RTX card, you can buy a good PC system with that money or three video game consoles.

cable2600··on Science is political, and that's a bad thing
When Al Gore said in 1998 that California would be under water by 2005, he was exaggerating for politics. A lot of climate change data was cherry picked and exaggerated to scare people into taking action.

Climate change is used as a bat to hit poor people in the head politically. The politics come from the left.

cable2600··on Apple faces growing likelihood of DOJ antitrust suit
Break up into the Baby Apples. One for macOS, one for iOS, one for iPhones and iPads, and one for Macintoshes. Open source the OS, even the mods Apple made that they don't share.
cable2600··on Don’t plug in that free Microsoft Office USB drive you got in the mail
I just use LibreOffice instead of MS-Office. https://www.libreoffice.org/ I am not a big fan of MS-Office being forced software that takes over Windows and activates a key online and steals info on the user.
cable2600··on HP iPAQ 4150 Pocket PC
Battery would go dead if not recharged in a quick enough time. I used to own one in the early 2000s. For the price you are better off with an Android phone.
cable2600··on Semiconductor Warfare of the XNUMXst Century
Sounds like US companies need to start making chips again. Apple-IBM-Motorola used to make the PowerPC processors. Maybe they can make ARM64 processors?
cable2600··on Ask HN: What's keeping you from writing a book?
I have grammar issues and they say I write like a child on Amazon.
cable2600··on Retirement of Amazon MOBI eBook file format
Amazon chose MOBL because it was compatible with the PRC format the old Palm Pilots used. The Palm Pilot was the original eBook reader.
cable2600··on Dum Dums Lollipops Drop-Shipping Hustle on Amazon Costs Spangler Candy Millions
Sam's is a wholesale club known for marking down prices. Amazon.com is a retail store. I wonder how many other businesses this effects?
cable2600··on New OS for Commodore 64 Adds Modern Features
Looks good.

Another C64 OS is on the Mega65 in Commodore 65 mode: https://mega65.org/

cable2600··on Windows 11 on ARM on macOS on M1 MacBook – cold boot to running Visual Studio
Yes my i5 Windows 10 machines takes longer to boot, but then I don't have a SSD virtual hard drive.
cable2600··on The Secret Service Texting Scandal Makes No Sense
Something fishy is going on here. I remember Hillary Clinton did the same with her email server using Bleach Bit. Both sides destroy data.
cable2600··on Ask HN: Do you guys hate medium.com?
I'd rather use Wordpress instead. It is free and Medium has a paywall.
cable2600··on WordPerfect for UNIX Character Terminals
LibreOffice handles WordPerfect data files and templates. https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/can-libreoffice-open-wordperfe...

HSTRIP will strip out ASCII values from a WordPerfect data file if it is corrupt or incompatible you just have to reformat the text. https://sourceforge.net/projects/hstrip/

cable2600··on Empire Burlesque: What Comes After the American Century?
Looks like both the Democrats and Republicans are fighting each other and in turn ruining the economy and the country. Already 30 trillion USD in debt and high inflation and high gas prices. Electric cars have no infrastructure yet and are expensive and not everyone can afford one, not the poor who own a $500 Toyota car from the 1980s.

China and Russia will take over the position that the USA used to have as a super power. We got a civil war 2.0 ruining our nation.

cable2600··on Windows 3.1 Flash Edition
Too bad it does not have Sound Blaster emulation.
cable2600··on $1 = €1
Good thing it is not 0 https://youtu.be/jZwW7oEE91o
cable2600··on Are big tech getting too judgemental?
Yes I was banned from PayPal without a warning or reason why. I followed the TOS, I did everything they wanted me to do. Suddenly they decided they could not do business with me and limited my account. I've been using PayPal since forever and always file my taxes including what I earn in PayPal. What did they judge me on? My last few transactions were a donation to Wikipedia, a donation to HaikuOS, and a purchase from Alibaba.

Can't reach them by phone, they don't have an email to write to, and the online help is a joke.

cable2600··on Windows 10 and Windows 11 downloads blocked in Russia
I heard they like China are going to GNU/Linux.
cable2600··on Fasting Your Way to 100 Years Old
Provided you can avoid cancer and viruses long enough to live to be 100.
cable2600··on Ask HN: Why Did VSCode Win?
Marketing is key, Microsoft marketed VSCode to Python programmers and others. It was written into tutorials to use VSCode as an IDE.

Richard Stallman wants me to use eMacs. Microsoft wants me to use VSCode.

I just want to see Visual Studio for Linux.

cable2600··on Can Researchers Show That Threat Assessment Stops Mass Shootings?
Funds for mental health hospitals got cut in Obamacare. Just release the funds and get people screened when they become a threat. Screen for threats with background checks esp at Gun Shows. Someone can make an app for a background check so it doesn't take two days.
cable2600··on Ramos threatened rapes, school shootings on Yubo in weeks leading up to massacre
The Columbine boys used a blow torch on their father's gun lockers to get guns. Made homemade bombs using plans found on the Internet. America Culture breeds sociopaths.
cable2600··on Ask HN: Good things about Windows 11
It plays video games better, but it needs to be on bare metal for that to happen.
cable2600··on Xkcd on Apple Maps
Links to here: https://xkcd.com/2617/
cable2600··on EA Looking to Sell or Merge
Disney should buy them as EA did some of the Star Wars games.
cable2600··on [dead]
Watercooler talk and gossip should not be allowed at work. Talking about work is fine, talk politics on your own time.
cable2600··on The Atari 800XL
It was a good computer, a friend had one and I had a Commodore 64. The 64 had better sound and sprites, but the Atari had better color and animation.
