cabaalis··on 20k honey bees took over a tech company’s empty office during lockdown
I recommend watching Jeff Horchoff on YouTube. He is very polite and his bee removal videos are oddly calming. I've been subscribed for a year or two now.

cabaalis··on Prosperity comes at 'devastating' cost to nature
It requires respecting nature as a new class of asset. I think anyone might understand who has had the beautiful field next to their home developed into a neighborhood, or watched the woods behind their house torn down and developed.

Had that beautiful field or wooded area been given a "nature cost" to destroy, maybe the developers would have made other choices.

cabaalis··on Analysis: Robinhood protected from lawsuits by user agreement, Congress
You state all this as though their choices were not deliberate. Of course they are acting within the rules, while trying to foster an appearance of all you can eat buffet instant buy/sell, when the market really doesn't work that way. However, users came to expect that convenience. That business model may be inherently untenable in the face of events like this.
cabaalis··on Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store
Alpaca sent me a notice this morning that they are also restricting trades. It's network behavior like this that is troubling.
cabaalis··on Electric vehicles close to ‘tipping point’ of mass adoption
Can someone who knows more about the subject that I do comment on the statement "electric powered vehicles are coal powered vehicles?" I'm seeing that in conservative circles.
cabaalis··on Salesforce says it has 'taken action' to prevent further U.S. political violence
I believe Russia's goal in that work was not to get Trump in but to destabilize. They are certainly succeeding.
cabaalis··on Study: All non-violent criminals jailed on minor drug offence should be released
I think this black and white view is how the constitution was written, and in boolean logic would be how it is designed. But reality has many shades of grey.

Would you trust your personal banking to an institution with history of leaking/mishandling/selling everything about you, or losing records of your balance?

Would you trust your health information to a doctor with previous history of kickbacks, malpractice, lax HIPAA compliance?

cabaalis··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
Primarily right-wing apps, websites, subreddits, communities. I'm afraid there will be attempts to cite some kind of complicity and ban them.

I'm troubled by it because right-wing != violent, and 74 million people voted for the republican candidate. Continuing to disenfranchise their speech options will not go well.

cabaalis··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
Never let a good crisis go to waste. I think we are seeing the beginning of a purge of a certain line of thought from the internet, using a few crazy people as the catalyst.
cabaalis··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
Sure. And then political pressure on CAs to deny certificates will take care of that. Or on ISPs to not transmit data from certain outlets. Or on registrars to delist domains. There's plenty of ways to de-platform.
cabaalis··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
Lies are a strong political tool, for both ultimate good or ill.
cabaalis··on Laptop stolen from Pelosi's office during storming of U.S. Capitol, says aide
You'd never see any of it. Depending upon who it damages, it either (a) wouldn't be published, or (b) it would be suppressed by media outlets for violating some obscure policy.
cabaalis··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
I don't support how Trump has handled the election. Before, after, during. We would all be better off if he would stop this and uphold our tradition of peaceful transition of power.

What I'm not seeing the media talk about is what difference does or does not exist between a group of people breaking into the capital (a political event at a political location) vs. cordoning off parts of a city, burning businesses, etc. If you don't recall, in June of last year, parts of Washington were quite literally on fire.

Without that discussion it greatly appears that they just support one group and their ideas but not the other, all the while calling others divisive.

cabaalis··on 30 years since the Human Genome Project began – what's next?
I know very little about this. Is it possible to get my sequence from one of the commercial groups doing this, and then "look it up" in a genome reference to verify my brown eyes, for example?

I acknowledge the lack of knowledge leading to the question. But it would be neat if possible.

cabaalis··on Looks vs. Results: My ugly ad got 150% more clicks than a professional design
The first thing I read on the hand drawn version was "free guide". In the "professional" version, my mind glossed over those words completely. I don't know why, other than maybe the pretty pictures at the bottom pulled my eye away.

I'll click on free.

cabaalis··on You’re Never Too Old to Become a Beginner
I saw an advertisement for an "apprenticeship" at a UK game development tool company that I'm a fan of. It said applicants must be aged 16 to 24. Is that standard practice in UK? How is that not age descrimination?
cabaalis··on Visa Advertising Solutions (VAS) Opt Out
Why would you want to make an option intended to give some semblance of privacy useless?

The net result of submitting all card numbers will not be "oh, well, I guess all card numbers are private now.." it will instead be "clear that table and start over."

cabaalis··on Metal Monolith in Utah Gone
Fun, but it's somebody's art project. There's also statues of Jason Voorhees at the bottom of various lakes.
cabaalis··on A Kid, a Minor Bike Accident and a $19,000 Medical Bill
I paid $2,000 last year for a hospital emergency department to superglue a cut on my son's head, it took 10 minutes. Next time, I'm going to glue it myself.
cabaalis··on I asked GPT-3 for the question to “42”
Riker yelling at a bearded Picard to shut up is a good moment.
cabaalis··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
Totally anecdotally, the 4 people in my family who got it are all 65+ with multiple underlying issues. It was a bad head cold for a week and half, all recovered. I know, sadly, that isn't the case for so many. I just don't know what to think.
cabaalis··on Zuckerberg defends not suspending ex-Trump aide Bannon from Facebook: recording
Uncool, but also political exaggeration. Burning an effigy of Donald Trump is an analogue. Nobody expects someone to catch Donald Trump on fire, and no one expects anyone to behead Anthony Fauci.
cabaalis··on It's 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better (2016)
Don't let the ridiculous prices of an urban center deter you. I assume you live in a very large country. Especially don't let the ridiculous prices of an urban center drive you to change the pricing and ownership system of said rest of the country.

Growing wealth is a simple formula: [amount spent] < [amount earned]. Rinse and repeat for a given length of time, and you will have more wealth than you started with.

cabaalis··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I have never once in my life "signed up" to a mailing list. The only reason I can think of that I receive so much spam is from sites where I've used my email address selling that information to others, or otherwise leaking it.
cabaalis··on Billy Mitchell’s Donkey Kong high-score case will move forward to trial
Consider "Ecstasy of Order" about Tetris, and a group of people who play it and have a tournament. It belongs in a top slot also.
cabaalis··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
And there can be only one is warcraft :)
cabaalis··on Babylon Bee’s CEO Pushes Back Against Big Tech (Facebook) Bullying
Have you ever listened to Ben Shapiro's podcast? He generally backs up his arguments pretty well, and admits poor arguments when he sees them.
cabaalis··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
Wow, so today I learned this is a thing. IDDQD. There can be only one.
cabaalis··on Reading too much political news is bad for your well-being
I listen to NPR often. What they say is generally factual and true; however I often note that a bias shows through what they do not mention when covering a topic. That's why we have the concept of the truth and the WHOLE truth.
cabaalis··on 14,000x Speedup (2015)
There's a happy medium between getting a job done and applying theorums/bigO/fancy data structures all the time. Probably what you came across and subsequently optimized was an implementation of the former.

Fun fact: Just getting the job done works out well most of the time, technical debt is introduced but as in your example it served its purpose.
