c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: How to become a good hacker?
Whatever you do: don't just sit back and relax.

If I were you, I'd find a problem you have and try and build something to fix it. Complement that with occasional hacks on existing projects.

To me, being a "hacker" is someone who's never really satisfied. Ask questions about why things are the way they are, and do work to change that.

Good luck.

c_t_montgomery··on Do you keep your own javascript "standard lib"?
What do you mean by this? Typical _.js users don't really understand javascript?

I ask because I feel like _.js is a fantastic library that I've been using in almost every project of mine since first trying it out. I've really grown to like it, but am interested in what you mean by your comment.

c_t_montgomery··on Going Simple with JavaScript
Yes, jQuery does utilize things like querySelectorAll (among other things) when available.
c_t_montgomery··on Advice needed: Intern at exploding startup vs. return to school
I was in this same situation. I worked for Lift (http://lift.do), partners with the founders of Twitter/Blogger - the Obvious Corporation.

I couldn't sleep well for weeks, and it was probably the hardest decision I had to make. It all boils down to what you want to do - the reason I went back to school (I have 2 years left as well) is because I can work the rest of my life, but the times I've had at school won't be available in 2 more years, when my best friends have graduated.

The way I solved it was by flipping a coin. Heads - I'll stay; Tails - I'm going back to school. If you have any doubts when it lands on either, I think the decision has been made.

In your case, seeing you're in your mid-twenties and was going to return back to school at a different one, that would be a heavy factor. I'd just make sure you're taken care of and get all of the logistics worked out if you do end up staying.

Good luck - let me know if you'd like to talk about it at all. Contact info is in my profile.

c_t_montgomery··on HTML5 version of Clear iOS app
How about also adding vibration? I think adding those two together would be pretty steller.

c_t_montgomery··on Ten $50,000 grants for startups who move to St. Louis
(disclaimer: I go to Saint Louis University, but spent last semester in SF)

I don't know what you're talking about - it's really not that bad.

For example: the STLJS meetup just started less than a year ago and had over 50 people at our last meetup. Granted - it's not SF or SValley, but it's not the hell hole you make it out to be. There are some of the most genuine and kind people I've ever met that are here in STL.

We're not a bunch of dumbfucks. Hell - WashU is ranked the 14th best university in the country. I'm not one that thinks a great school is equivalent to intelligence, but c'mon - there are people here that think. A lot of them. Just not the same way a bunch of HNers do.

It's just a different culture here. People are much more corporate and family-focused, which isn't a bad thing to a lot of people.

With that being said, StartupWeekendSTL was here a few weeks ago, and there were too many people to fit in the place we had. It was awesome!

Think what you want, but if you really think St. Louis is that bad, then you're just not reaching out for the culture you're looking for, sorry.

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: How does an iOS app like Clear get so much publicity?
While that may be true, it's absolutely not the case.

A lot of their coverage has to do with the fact that it's got an intuitive and brilliant UI.

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: Do you recommend compressing js files to remove extra whitespace?
I'd use something like Grunt (https://github.com/cowboy/grunt) as a way to minify & concatenate your files for deployment.

That way, you can work with a file formatted to your liking, but when deployed, it will be optimized.

c_t_montgomery··on Show HN: I made a GitHub Flavored Markdown API
Nice job! Actually have a side project ill get to use this in. Thank you!
c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: Web-based IRC?
sweet - wasn't aware of irssi. installing that now - thank you!
c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: What would you do?
I love this strategy of rewarding myself with time for side projects by getting problems right. Great idea - thank you!
c_t_montgomery··on Beautiful Buttons for Twitter Bootstrappers
One would have to wonder why you would choose less.js over sass. In that case, you'd probably have to add support for both (at least it'd probably be requested), which in the end would add to the complexity of this little tool.

I think that's why it's just vanilla CSS...

c_t_montgomery··on Beautiful Buttons for Twitter Bootstrappers
Me too. Sending an email to them right now...
c_t_montgomery··on Bootstrap 2.0, From Twitter
Seeing that the designer/developer of Skeleton (@dhg on twitter) is a designer at Twitter now, I'm sure there will be plenty of mash-ups between Bootstrap and Skeleton.

At least, it gives me something to hack on this weekend :D

c_t_montgomery··on Html5please
If you'd like to see this, why don't you file an issue on the repo?

c_t_montgomery··on Test your *.js files against jshint before committing
If I used Sumblime Text 2, I'd absolutely use the Lint plugin. Looks awesome and I've heard great things.

I've really grown to love my MacVim setup, though.

Thanks!

Raven isn't bad - some prefer it over Fluid. I don't, but I still think it's a solid replacement.

c_t_montgomery··on College Isn’t and Shouldn’t Be the Best Years of Your Life
I'm in college, and it's been the best two years of my life. While I'm excited for what my future holds, there's something appealing about the little responsibility students have.

I took last semester off to work with a startup in SF, and it was an amazing experience. It taught me that I should in fact cherish my time at school because of the little responsibility we really do have on campus.

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: What's your process of writing a blog post?
This makes sense, and I can see how you'd be able to crank out posts from it. How do you go about keeping track of any "excess topics"? Typically, whenever I find something I like and dive into it, my mind can diverge the post into a few separate posts, which helps keep them to a good size.

Thanks for the comment and insight!

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: Best blogging platform?
I've been using octopress on cnnr.me/b (just started it 2 days ago, so we're in the same boat), and I've really enjoyed it.

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: How to you read new comments on existing threads
My buddy Michael Schade put this tool together, if you're interested: https://github.com/michaelschade/hnpc
c_t_montgomery··on Does the reputation of your college matter in getting a job?
Going to a great school (like Berkeley) will immediately help, in terms of connections and job offers. Depending on your attitude and mindset, that may be it, or it may propel you to further things in life.

If you can afford Berkeley, I'd absolutely take advantage of it.

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: Is it time for a new browser?
JS disabled by default - seriously? So many apps nowadays rely on it and are JS-driven. I can't imagine how that would be a better experience, regardless of what you think of the language.

Can you please elaborate more on that one in particular and why you'd want it?

c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: Is it time for a new browser?
Just out of curiosity - what are your beefs with (Chrome) Web Inspector? I think it's fantastic, but am interested in hearing your opinion(s).
c_t_montgomery··on Ask HN: How can I transition from lab tech to web developer?
Drown yourself in code (writing and reading) and make things. Even if they are simple, or insecure, or very, very inefficient. Just make them. That experience alone will help you get better.

To more specifically answer your question - find something that's bothering you, and make a web-app that tries to fix it.

c_t_montgomery··on Show HN (again - fixed now): I made this before getting out of bed this morning
Great point. I'll implement that once I at back. Was originally just thinking about simple names, as this is just a personal tool. Thanks for the feedback!
c_t_montgomery··on Show HN (again - fixed now): I made this before getting out of bed this morning
Sorry about the initial posting - it was working locally, but not on heroku. It's been fixed now - thanks for the feedback!

garrrh. thanks everyone - not sure why it's returning "yep". Looking into this now.
c_t_montgomery··on Show HN: Experimental Mac app for reading HN
I'm very impressed thus far. One thing - its a bit slow for me (loading in a post and starting up in general). However, that may just be my internet connection.

I would love to help with this in any way possible. Let me know (email is in profile).
