c_prompt··on Malware on My Android Phone
> Listing the apps installed on my phone should give me the option to sort them by “Latest installed”. I am pretty sure that if I had had this option and I had seen a QR Code Scanner installed just a few days ago, it would have immediately grabbed my attention. As it is, the way Android lists the installed apps is pretty useless for this purpose.

I was able to find it pretty quickly by going to:

Settings > Battery > Usage Details > Battery Usage Since Full Charge

This showed me the most recent app used. As I hadn't used the QR scanner app in quite some time, it seemed a reasonable place to look first.

c_prompt··on Show HN: Twelve70 - Men's outfit generator and closet management
Probably not and, candidly, I'm not sure I'd use the app. Putting aside that my build is described as athletic and it's typically hard for me to find clothes that fit properly (e.g., larger shoulders/chest/biceps, small waist), for me to feel comfortable buying anything, I'd want someone to get to know my personality and nuances (e.g., overheats easily), make recommendations that I try on and model in front of them to get opinions (e.g., "yes, that works"; "next!"), and help me gain a better understanding of WHY something looks good vs. doesn't. I think it'd be hard for me to get that from someone other than a friend and not being in person (a video chat might work but I have doubts). I'm highly unlikely to rely on an algorithm when it comes to matching/style.
c_prompt··on Show HN: Twelve70 - Men's outfit generator and closet management
I consider this a funny story. You might consider it just sad...

Preface: my style could be considered wanting when it comes to picking out my own clothes. Many years ago, I did a complete refresh of my clothes because nothing fit and everything was well-worn. So I took a buddy whom I considered stylish to Nordstrom's and he, along with the salesperson, took what I gave them as my budget and general requirements to pick out a complete wardrobe. They did so. However, there were so many different items and colors and I didn't know how to mix and match. So my friend devised the following list which I still keep:

Matching:

Yellow Polo goes everything but black (blue and mocha best)

Blue check goes with gray and stone (blue and stone best)

Dark tan herringbone goes with black, camel, tan, stone (olive and mocha ok)

Camel (shiney) goes with tan, black, mocha, and olive

Camel (short-sleeve button down) goes with mocha, olive, and black (tan is average)

Eggplant/Plum button down goes with blue, black, gray, camel, mocha, and tan

Taupe goes with tan, stone, black, and camel (not blue)

Purple goes with tan, stone, black, camel, blue, and mocha (not olive)

Blue/Gray (slate) t-shirt goes with tan, black, and navy (stone is best and camel is ok)

Sky blue t-shirt goes with everything but olive (tan and stone are best, black is ok)

Burgundy t-shirt goes with everything (olive best)

Olive/Green t-shirt goes with stone, tan, black, camel, and mocha (olive is ok)

Black pants always black belt

Tan (with black) -> black

Tan (with lighter/softer) -> brown

Yellow -> brown

Tan goes with either

Herringbone goes with either

Green -> brown

Mocha will almost always wear brown (except if black pants, then either)

Black and blue pants will be black shoes except for light shirt (e.g., yellow)

Stone will more often go with brown except with purple and black shirt (though not necessary)

Treat gray as black

Socks always match pants or darker

Earth tone pants with black socks ok in bind

Don't mix belt and shoes

Served me many years. Sadly, none of those clothes fit me anymore. So here I am again...

c_prompt··on Reddit rolls out community currencies on Ethereum
Not exactly the way I proposed it to Steve Huffman [1] but happy to see reddit experimenting with the idea of value for value. A few questions they hopefully will try to answer:

1. Does trading values (e.g., money for content) make for a more peaceful environment in social networks and other online communities?

2. Does allowing an easy and voluntary way to reward content creators improve the quality of the content (e.g., higher accuracy, fact-based arguments, better ideas, more toleration of different ideas)?

3. Can users make enough money from content creation without relying on advertising (thus disrupting journalism and even removing the draw for companies to sell private information)?

4. Will users start to think in terms of exchanging values and, if so, will these thoughts then spillover to other parts of their lives?

c_prompt··on Ask HN: What are you building for Startup School?
Ouch. Just received the following:

> We are deeply sorry to have to send this email, but unfortunately an error occurred in the software that triggers acceptance emails. The acceptance email was sent to you even though we are unfortunately not able to include you in the Startup School Advisor Track.

> Although you are not in the Advisor Track, you have, in fact, been accepted to audit Startup School and will have access to all of the content just as soon as it is made available.

> Again, we regret having made this error and raised your expectations unnecessarily. We hope you continue working on your startup and that Startup School is a huge help.

Makes me think someone saw this post and said "Hmm... maybe not."

c_prompt··on Ask HN: What are you building for Startup School?
The problem I'm trying to solve is ideological. I want to see more peace in the world and I think one of the reasons we see so much strife is because too many people are OK with and tacitly approve getting something for nothing. I was accepted with valME.io, a CMS/blogging/forum builder to help spread the idea that trading values makes a much more peaceful environment.
c_prompt··on Ask HN: Blogging platforms for non-technical people?

c_prompt··on US telcos appear to be selling non-anonymized access to consumer telephone data
Roger responded a week later after I sent him a reminder note:

> ...thank you for checking in. We have notified your phone company based on the phone number provided, to opt you out. We do not store any of your data. So we have done what you have asked. Thank you.

And my mistake: although he may have, he likely didn't need to look up my name as I just realized the email account I sent it from included it.

c_prompt··on SSL now available for Tumblr blogs with custom domains
valME.io, the blogging site I developed, has been doing this for years [1]. A user can provide their own SSL cert if they want but typically I just set them up via Let's Encrypt and then it does its automatic renewal process. If you're on a VPS, it's straight-forward to setup one of many ACME client alternatives [2]. If you're on shared hosting, it will depend on the hosting provider (some might even have it integrated if they use an administrative tool like Virtualmin).

c_prompt··on US telcos appear to be selling non-anonymized access to consumer telephone data
Received an almost immediate message back from payfone:

"Hi [my name],

While we should explain more clearly that these services are used to protect consumers from fraud, with one's consent, you can set up what you are asking about with your phone company. We can send you the procedures to do that. I'd like to go a step further and see if we can just opt you out entirely across the board. I should also note that we do note store any current or historical personally identifiable data. Hold on for more info."

As an aside, I didn't provide [my name] with my request - of course they looked it up based on the phone number provided.

I just emailed this company at general@danalinc.com (which is the address stated in their privacy policy [1]) to remove all of my information from all databases/backups and to never collect it again. Came back undelivered with a 550 error (Recipient address rejected: Access denied).

c_prompt··on Ask HN: Critique of logo design ideas
This is all great feedback. Thank you. I was actually leaning toward the money tree/plant idea too (someone else brought up the idea of adding water/watering can which I really liked). Your point about drawing and making it look nice when it's small is an excellent point. The idea of a coin with an upvote inside is brilliant and would be much easier to make/use for small situations. I'll ask someone to draw a mock-up of that.

I'm very much interested in finding a UI expert to help with the project.

c_prompt··on Pingendo – Free, simple app for Bootstrap prototyping
> Slightly OT: Is it just me or is Bootstrap a bit of an overkill nowadays?

Coming from someone whose PHP skills aren't too shabby but his graphical design skills stink, I'd say no.

From the very beginning of my current project, I've had difficulty finding a partner with strong UI skills. In fact, I chose my early frameworks almost solely upon needing to rely on the UI design of others. UI just isn't a strength. Hell, I don't even match clothes well and (I kid you not) I still keep a note in my phone about which colors of shirts and pants match together.

Although Bootstrap is fat, as you suggest, for someone like me having to do almost all UI on my own and who's been told his logo looks like it was done by a toddler with a large paintbrush, it is wonderful to be able to drop Bootstrap in so I can focus my attention elsewhere. A tool like Pingendo makes it even easier for me.

c_prompt··on You are not what you read: librarians purge user data to protect privacy
As an avid reader, a few years ago, I got a membership at https://www.librarything.com/ because my queue was getting thin. It has a feature that makes recommendations based on what you read. I spent many hours entering all the books from my shelves. I then went to the library (where I get most of my books) to see if they could print out all books I've read over the years. Nope. "As soon as a book is returned, the loan is deleted from their database." Why? "So the government can't find out what people are reading."

The irony that librarians - government employees - actually recognize the real threat and protect their customers is why the library remains the only government institution I support.

c_prompt··on Show HN: Lescript – Simple PHP client library for Let's encrypt
This is probably my misunderstanding of how it works. Pardon what's probably a silly question, but do all certs work the same way (i.e., certs are never "renewed" but just reissued with new dates)?
c_prompt··on Show HN: Lescript – Simple PHP client library for Let's encrypt
How is this used to renew? I don't see a function related to renewals.
c_prompt··on Entering Public Beta

c_prompt··on Success: what happens when America's food banks embrace free-market economics [pdf]
tl/dr:

Feeding America [1] is a network of food banks that feeds more than 46 million people. In 2005, four professors at the University of Chicago helped replace their centralized distribution system with an auction-based one, allocating "shares" to each bank to bid on donated food.

From The Week [2]:

"Initially, there was plenty of resistance. As one food bank director told Canice Prendergast, an economist advising Feeding America, "I am a socialist. That's why I run a food bank. I don't believe in markets. I'm not saying I won't listen, but I am against this." But the Chicago economists managed to design a market that worked even for participants who did not believe in it. Within half a year of the auction system being introduced, 97 percent of food banks won at least one load, and the amount of food allocated from Feeding America's headquarters rose by over 35 percent, to the delight of volunteers and donors."

The end result has been an improvement over the centralized scheme, whereby "a lot of food rotted in places where it was not needed, while many shelves in other food banks stood empty."

c_prompt··on Ask HN: How to Find the Best Info on Cancer Treatments?
This isn't a direct answer to your questions but I hate this disease with a passion and any discussions about mainstream research avenues that ignore other less well-accepted forms of treatment get my emotions in a whirl. (My sister died of brain cancer.)

Please consider researching the benefits of marijuana in your efforts to help your relative. It provides tremendous relief for pain and nausea and cannabinoid treatment causes cancer cells to commit suicide. [1]

My thoughts are with you and your family.

c_prompt··on Put the “Ph” Back in PhD
Conceptually, I agree with his view that without a better understanding and appreciation for philosophy, humanity is limited by the progress science makes. But if I'm understanding his reasoning, he wants more philosophy so that scientists can become well-rounded generalists, reduce competitiveness, and better communicate to voters and politicians. These might be valuable benefits but, to me, humanity could benefit most if scientists had a much better understanding of rational ethics. IMO, universities are churning out too many unethical scientists and, for proof, I offer how much money goes into government-related projects (e.g., weapons, surveillance, control). A rational understanding of ethics is needed to reduce the research and funding of the plethora of destructive and control-oriented efforts. Not to mention that if scientists ever truly learned rational ethics, they'd no longer ask for government grants as they'd know it's wrong to take stolen money.
c_prompt··on Windows 10 updates to be automatic and mandatory for Home users
Here's one example why this is a bad decision. From a sailing forum [1]:

"I just read an article... that says that there will be no way to turn off updates on Windows 10. That's going to impact cruisers with limited access to the internet. Trying to download an important email? Please wait while we phone home to Microsoft first, then download 1.2GB of updates..."

Granted, if you have Pro, maybe it's not as much an issue because you can delay it for months. But I still think MS is making a bad decision in their attempt at control.

c_prompt··on Ask HN: Give direction to artist for developing technical skills as backup plan
She actually tried the junior college route when she lived in a college town to finish her degree. Hated it (not to mention the financial burden).

I'm frustrated with myself because I'm out of ideas. I know I can't be her internal fire and I can't tell her what to do. But she's such a good person. If I could just help her get exposure to something she enjoyed, I know she'd run with it and have the security she needs.

c_prompt··on ViralNova acquired for $100M, while The Dissolve shuts down
> The $100 million acquisition proves that there is no more bar for ‘quality content.’ Quality content is only a fraction of the equation for illustrating #value in a media brand. Projecting the idea of having ‘quality content’ might even be more important than spending money on the production of quality content. It’s just bad business.

> The funny thing is that Dissolve probably had everything a niche content farm needs to be successful.

> But you can’t really justify a ‘team’ of writers producing long content that doesn’t even #perform by today’s content economy standards.

> A site like ViralNova demonstrates just how a generalist content site ruined the web.

[rant]

Articles like this make me want to scream: "your metrics for 'quality' are defined by your philosophy!" Your standards (metrics) are based on your values. Your values, which are hierarchical, are based on your fundamentals. Your fundamentals = your philosophy.

A crime boss rules his neighborhood by threatening people with violence unless they pay extortion. He grows rich in terms of money. His large influence is based on force. For those who fundamentally value quantity of money or influence, by their standards, he has a quality and successful business. For those who fundamentally value honesty or the non-aggression principle [1] in their hierarchy of values as more important, he has a low quality and unsuccessful business.

No, sites like ViralNova haven't ruined the web and, no, I'm not conflating content farms and extortion. ViralNova is giving people want they want. Just as contemporary art is a reflection of the prevailing philosophy [2], so is ViralNova a reflection of ubiquitous standards that trends, "hotness," and money are morally proper reflections of value in and of themselves. To paraphrase a famous book [3], "lowbrow" content is not the root of all evil killing the Internet. You must ask what is at the root of content. Until people start experiencing and learning alternative philosophies, their values won't change. If you want to change the Web and raise the intellectual "bar," you need to focus on the philosophies behind the metrics that define "successful" - not the metrics themselves.

c_prompt··on The Decentral Authority
> I honestly don't understand the necessity or want for something like this.

Here's what I wrote elsewhere:

"Imagine you're a programmer. For us coding geeks, sites like Stack Overflow are a lifeline to getting work done. In fact, we're reasonably convinced that when Stack Overflow goes down, all programming around the world just stops. (Well, at least that's the excuse we use.) Yet, when we read an answer from someone who has fixed that (Javascript) problem we've spent hours debugging, we want to kiss that person's feet with the appropriate Wayne's World salute. It's times like those when a thank you and a (worthless) upvote just don't seem enough. That person saved us from hours of wasted effort and aggravation. That geek deserves more."

tl/dr: I want it because I don't expect something for nothing. If someone provides me value, I want to exchange something in return.

c_prompt··on Fix Reddit with Bitcoin
> So you're saying if I create two accounts, one that posts illegal content and one that very quickly flags it, I'll gain a bounty from users each time?

No. The bounty comes solely from dividing up the upvotes among the users who flagged the post. Additionally, the cost to flag is 1 karma (so there's a disincentive to try to censor content), but you get that 1 karma back if a mod agrees with the flag. If there aren't any upvotes, there isn't any bounty to be divided and distributed.

Edit: Here's an example of the way it could work - https://valme.io/c/gettingstarted/faq/5qqqs/whats-a-modqueue...
