cAtte_··on Seedance 1.0
who said anything about movies? the conversation is about misinformative content, which is typically very low-effort
cAtte_··on Show HN: Tritium – The Legal IDE in Rust
VS Code, the aforementioned very performant Electron-based IDE, would like to differ
cAtte_··on Android 16 is here
> With Android 16, you can now activate Advanced Protection, Google’s strongest mobile device protection. It enables an array of robust device security features that protect you from online attacks, harmful apps, unsafe websites, scam calls and more. blah blah

let me guess: Advanced Protection will continue to gain features that restrict the freedom of users in the name of security and some time from now it will be mandatorily enabled for everyone. classic google!

cAtte_··on Magistral — the first reasoning model by Mistral AI
49 em-dashes, 59 commas. that's a crazy ratio
cAtte_··on My first attempt at iOS app development
what a beautiful website
cAtte_··on Google restricts Android sideloading
requiring a user to own a PC in order to sideload apps (with adb) would, in fact, count as blocking sideloading, albeit partially. so i don't think that's the right limit
cAtte_··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
if someone is unwilling to pay for access to an entire collection of articles, i'd find it very unlikely that they pay for a single article. unless it's an outrageously low price like 10 cents or something
cAtte_··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
or you can just google it? it's not like the source code is exclusively held by 404media and you must pay them to view it, or something. would you have the same opinion if e.g. the article was the same but just didn't link to the repo?
cAtte_··on A proposal to restrict sites from accessing a users’ local network
you missed the point. password managers are one of the many use cases for this feature; that they just so happen to be mostly implemented as extensions does not mean that the feature is only useful for extensions
cAtte_··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
how is the software being paywalled here?
cAtte_··on Quarkdown: A modern Markdown-based typesetting system
do you have some sort of ethical opposition to unicode?
cAtte_··on Quarkdown: A modern Markdown-based typesetting system
Typst!
cAtte_··on Quarkdown: A modern Markdown-based typesetting system
they were probably mentioning that, with pandoc, you can convert between HTML and PDF for any of these tools anyway
cAtte_··on Cows get GPS collars to stop them falling in river
this is the third slop machine I see today, inconspicuously hiding among genuine comments. mods please do something about this <3
cAtte_··on Show HN: Typed-FFmpeg 3.0–Typed Interface to FFmpeg and Visual Filter Editor
yet another slop machine
cAtte_··on Show HN: Typed-FFmpeg 3.0–Typed Interface to FFmpeg and Visual Filter Editor
i really don't understand. what's the point of having an LLM comment on random HN posts? like, i get doing that somewhere like reddit because commenting brings karma and legitimacy to an account, which can later be used for astroturfing, or sold. but here? you're just polluting interesting conversations with polite and wholly uninteresting slop
cAtte_··on Wake Up, Remix
probably not, there's a few comma splices in there
cAtte_··on Show HN: HNRelevant – Add a "related" section to Hacker News
yep, as a user of Modern for HN i always wondered why they decided to implement it like this; it's not like it adds any crazy features (it's mostly aesthetic). as a result i'm unable to use other great extensions like this one along with it :(
cAtte_··on Why I no longer have an old-school cert on my HTTPS site
relevant blog post and HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22146291
cAtte_··on How we made our OCR code more accurate
Pieces is (correction: used to be, prior to the AI slopification) an app for storing code snippets. so i think you can imagine the general idea of, e.g., "cool API usage example from a YouTube video, let me screenshot it!"
cAtte_··on Show HN: Whenish – Plan Group Events in iMessages
beautiful domain name
cAtte_··on Show HN: Test your license plate identification skills
OP seems to be referring to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44025022
cAtte_··on Show HN: Appwrite Sites – the open-source vercel alternative
what's with all the bots in the comments?
cAtte_··on I hacked a dating app (and how not to treat a security researcher)
this stops applying when your cute little app starts storing people's passports
cAtte_··on Critical CSS
yeah, doing this manual copy-paste process every time you change something would count as cruel and unusual punishment
cAtte_··on Show HN: A motherfucking app (does one thing, under 300 LOC)
(wrong post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43870289)
cAtte_··on A Common Lisp jq replacement
no, what the author claims is that jq should've been designed as a regular python library, using python syntax, rather than as a bespoke DSL (that happens to have parser bindings for python)
cAtte_··on Obituary for Cyc
like what, for example?
cAtte_··on Show HN: Browser MCP – Automate your browser using Cursor, Claude, VS Code
by the way, you can indeed access your personal context with Playwright. just `launchPersistentContext()` and set the userDataDir to that of your existing Chrome install:

https://playwright.dev/docs/api/class-browsertype#browser-ty...

cAtte_··on Show HN: OCR pipeline for ML training (tables, diagrams, math, multilingual)
why are you offended on behalf of this person? the hindsight that they're simply an English learner obviously makes me feel bad for asking the question and i completely understand the use case, but i don't think it was unreasonable to think that someone who speaks entirely in ChatGPT paragraphs might be a bot, spammer, or the like—particularly because, in a botnet fashion, the original reply was to a comment that also seemed to be LLM-authored
