c487bd62··on AMD Contributes 8.5x More Code to the Linux Kernel Than Nvidia
AFAIK AMD also goes out of their way to provide support. NVIDIA I'm not so sure e.g. EGLStream and Wayland, Optimus, G-SYNC
c487bd62··on Qwant – An alternative to Google
I got that, I think it's important to support competitors in this space even if they don't have an edge (yet?). At the very least they get some feedback and data to improve their core. Maybe one of them will find new revenue models that aren't prone to abuse or corruption. Honestly I think Google only got worse in the last few years for me, e.g. certain search operators getting ignored or not working as they used to, image search completely broken and screwed by pinterest & co. I'm now forced to use several search engines to limit the context I used to get for free.

> but why use this over duckduckgo?

If history showed us anything is that we need a lot of competition in this area

c487bd62··on Ask HN: Do you really need a $1000 phone?
> It isn't a computer, it can never replace my macbook

That's probably why most people don't mind paying that much. They see their phones as their personal computer and don't need an actual desktop, or even notebook anymore. And a phone delivers a lot of extra value like the camera. A high-end GPU alone could be seen as luxury and some of their MSRP are already over $800.

c487bd62··on Ending PHP Support, and the Future of Hack
Still waiting for source for all those claims. I'm not being ironic or anything but people throw things under the bus so easily it would be nice to see the data (comparison).

Their numbers are huge so of course the number of exploited servers will be higher in raw numbers, but is the core "extremely" exploited or is the plugins the real problem? We should be talking about the language/merits but I'll listen to arguments about the ecosystem. Just feels really dumb to talk about things like plugins. It's like saying JS is crap because 70% of the web extensions written in JS are sold to the botnet or are pure crap. Or how a popular operating system has more CVEs because it's popular. Not sure how to explain better what I want to say so let's just leave at that.

Can you show some data? I'm interested to see how exploitable popular PHP frameworks (Laravel and Symfony?) and the language itself are over the years in comparison to JavaScript, Python and Ruby web stuff. Not interested in anecdotes or bad code from bad programmers (aka Wordpress plugins) being used as an argument.

My company has some legacy PHP stuff that is rock solid, making money for years, survived every single audit (and PHP 7 cut our server costs by half).

Reality: we get Electron but this time using Servo
c487bd62··on Can you use the terminal for everything? [video]
Yes but it's easier for when you just want to open a link to watch. You get subtitles, audio channels, can skip to the part you want, without downloading the entire video. I think it's DASH but more options are available, it works for Twitch and many other sites (thanks to youtube-dl I guess). With a browser extension you can click on links and open mpv directly.

c487bd62··on Japan to add millions of new nodes to federated Nextcloud network
I'll take PHP spaghetti over JS any day
c487bd62··on Netflix is the latest company to try bypassing Apple’s app store
Does this means that any app distributed outside the store doesn't get access to closed features like Google Cloud Messaging? If so that's another reason to support sideloading since right now using MicroG seems like a pain in the ass (if you, like me, need a lot of problematic apps)

Things will only get better from now on (or as long as the money keeps flowing).

c487bd62··on Valve Rolls Out Wine-Based “Proton” for Running Windows Games on Linux
Not to mention that it acts as a compatibility layer for older games that don't run on Windows 10 and others that will stop working as they remove more and more legacy code/features.

Some say there are games that have noticeable stutters or bottlenecks on Windows that doesn't share the same issues on Wine.

> Google already has a near-monopoly in the smartphone space and it's much better than the Windows monopoly on the desktop.

Like half the useful apps have problems running without Google Apps being installed. GCM errors, apps refusing to run if the Play Store is not installed, Google making decisions that impact ROM developers. That's what I read about it anyway and discouraged me from trying AOSP without Gapps.

> it's much better than the Windows monopoly on the desktop

Steam is DRM. Gabe bus factor: Microsoft buys Steam and renames it to GFWL Redux

> Users playing through Steam Play experiencing Linux-specific issues should be directed to Steam for support

I wonder how they'll handle user reviews. Maybe performance won't be an issue, I know some games run even faster than on Windows, but bugs that you don't know are Proton specific could lead to bad reviews.

c487bd62··on Bing.com now runs on .NET Core
Visual Studio is a must for 99% of .net jobs, right? I see a lot of praise and comments that it's so good you can't replace it

Do you think they will drop VS and adopt VS Code as the recommended solution? Since it's locked to Windows, bloated and there's no 64 bits version
