c22··on Dad brains: How fatherhood rewires the male mind
There's all sorts of fun and exciting milestones ahead, but in my experience around 18mos - 4yrs is sort of a sweet spot. Enjoy it while it lasts!
c22··on NIST scientists create 'any wavelength' lasers
I think you are correct, but the likelihood of perceiving probably is tied to language.

It's amazing how much time we spend on autopilot.

c22··on Cyberattack on vehicle breathalyzer company leaves drivers stranded in the US
But we still restrict sale of alcohol to minors, suggesting that it, like driving, is a privilege granted only to those we trust to control it, rather than a natural right deserved by everyone.

Wouldn't it be better to take the alcohol away?

Make the drone carry a couple of orange cones (or just look like an orange cone itself) and you can even have it save the spot it finds until you get there.
c22··on Harold and George Destroy the World
I understand, of course, and was being mostly tongue in cheek. However, I do think there could be something to the idea that as the majority of the world has trended younger we notice a net decrease in perceived maturity across the population.

I've found using a passport card for ID instead of a driver's license to have several advantages, including that most places seem to be unable to scan it.
c22··on Treasure hunter freed from jail after refusing to turn over shipwreck gold
I think there'd be a big psychological difference between spend the next 10 years in jail, collect 400 million and you're in jail indefinitely, if you get out you may collect 400 million.

I think we hit "peak baby" around a decade ago, so this checks out.

With the digital panopticon neither goons nor missles are really necessary. Opressive forces can just disable your spending and travel credits. If they need you dead or in custody they can just grab you the next time you pop up on camera near one of their agents.

Yes. They provided their definition in response to your (mis?)reading of their original words. They are not the party bringing bad faith to this conversation.

Perhaps you are not looking that closely? Plants have memory and demonstrate directed action through time and space. They can respond to touch, light, sound, and chemical signalling from other plants, insects, and fungi. What are the fingerprints of consciousness and feelings that you are looking for?

c22··on Sub-second volumetric 3D printing by synthesis of holographic light fields
I believe this happens inside a liquid substrate that cures (hardens) when exposed to light. Instead of building up a shape by exposing a series of flat layers (stacked on top of eachother) one at a time, this exposes the entire 3d shape at once, using holograms.
c22··on Large-Scale Online Deanonymization with LLMs
As you say, the_af mentions this an hour before your reply. I'm curious what is the point of your posting a "me too" comment here? Was it to teach naive readers the word stylometry?
c22··on Large-Scale Online Deanonymization with LLMs
True, but you could also use llms to autonomously engage with content you're not interested in, batch replies for times you're not around, inject coherent, consistent, plausible, but false details into your messages, or modify/flag details you didn't mean to disclose.
c22··on Large-Scale Online Deanonymization with LLMs
A silver lining of the ai apocolypse is that users may be able to use the technology to maintain their anonymity via llm paraphrasing.

c22··on I don't know how you get here from “predict the next word”
Gotcha, I don't think I know enough about it. What constitutes training data for a for a (non neural network) statistical model? Is this something I could play around with myself with pen and paper?
c22··on I don't know how you get here from “predict the next word”
> If you train a model that f(x) = 5 and f(x+1) = 6, the number 7 doesn't have to exist in the training data for the model to give you a correct answer for f(x+2)

This is an interesting claim to me. Are there any models that exist that have been trained with a (single digit) number omitted from the training data?

If such a model does exist, how does it represent the answer? (What symbol does it use for the '7'?)
