c1u··on California To Hit Startup Founders with Big Retroactive Tax Bills
ok, the highest marginal tax rate for a $65K gross salary is ~30%. Everyone gets the first ~10K tax-free, then it's ~20% (in BC) off the next ~$40K, then ~30% off the next ~$40K. Only the last ~$15K gets taxed at 30%, and you can easily reduce that to zero with available legal tax-shelters/deductions/credits.

BC health premiums are $65/month for a single person. Sales tax is a consumption tax and not really relevant.

"50% marginal tax rate started around $65k"

I think your friend has very poor math skills.

http://www.ey.com/CA/en/Services/Tax/Tax-Calculators-2012-Pe...

$65K gross income in BC nets nearly $52K; a ~20% average tax rate. This is before any eligible deductions.

Even if your friend was making $1,000,000 gross salary, they'd still pay less than 42% tax on average, and that's ignoring several legal tax shelters available to all Canadians.

c1u··on Trekkies rejoice: A real warp drive in the works - other stars, here we come.
Maybe, but then how do we radiate away 500kg of pure energy before it reduces the ship to a plasma? Not easy.

regarding the GRB - http://www.universetoday.com/93882/warp-drives-may-come-with...

c1u··on Trekkies rejoice: A real warp drive in the works - other stars, here we come.
500kg sounds trivial, until you realize they mean conversion of 500kg of antimatter into energy being able to use 100% of this energy for the drive. Good luck solving that problem any time soon. You have the time though, it's going to take a really long time to make or gather 500kg of antimatter.

Then there's the problem of destroying your destination when you arrive in shower of gamma radiation.

c1u··on Diamonds Are A Man’s Best Friend
Diamonds as an investment? Only probably as the worst investment one can make in their entire life.

Don't believe me? Try to sell one.

Diamonds are a total scam. They are not rare. They are not special. Only a fool would ever buy one.

c1u··on Trello celebrates One Million Users
Good points. I've been pushing Trello for our team internally and almost everyone who's had a chance to use it so far loves it. We've even started using it with clients for QA and most clients really like it. Only one client hates it, but they are one of those rare poison-clients we really want to fire. Maybe Trello could even be a great way to qualify new clients :P

I hadn't even noticed the export features and now that I've taken I look a lot of my concerns seem much less important. Thanks!

Still trying to figure out how to effectively use the "due date" feature though. When a card's checklist is complete it still shows as past due. Not a dealbreaker at all though, we'll figure out how to make it work.

c1u··on Trello celebrates One Million Users
I love Trello, but cannot commit to using it more for business until I have an expectation of service, which comes from paying for it. They're awesome, but they owe me nothing, and that's just too risky.
c1u··on How Corn Syrup Might Be Making Us Hungry and Fat
FYI table sugar is 50% fructose. HFCS is usually 55% fructose. Honey and maple syrup are also ~50% fructose. You cannot escape it unless your only sugar comes from starch & dairy.

It should be obvious to everyone that a diet higher in sugar which is energy dense but not very satiating will tend to lead to one eating more and gaining weight.

If you want to decrease your appetite, eat more protein. No other macronutrient is as satiating as protein.

Reducing your sugar intake is a good tactic for weight loss, but only because it tends to mean you're reducing your overall caloric intake, which is the most important factor by far for losing weight.

c1u··on [dead]
All credibility is destroyed at the word "detox", which is always total bullshit. There is no such thing as "detox".

If the text in the linked page is any indication this program was not made by someone with basic understanding of human physiology and nutrition. For example "organic" foods will NOT remove any "dangerous toxic waste" from your body and "5 foods that will cause maximum weight loss" do not exist.

c1u··on Oxygen-Powered Jet Travels The World In 4 Hours
"An oxygen powered jet did not travel the world in 4 hours" - TRUE, as I know of no aircraft that can carry a human at mach 9.

But without an oxidizer combustion is not possible. I don't know of any airplane (jet or propeller) that uses anything but oxygen as it's oxidizer.

c1u··on Why Afternoon May Be the Best Time to Exercise
... if you are a mouse.

The best time to exercise is whenever you can push yourself the hardest. Although I come from the cardio-is-stupid-just-eat-right-and-lift-heavy mindset.

c1u··on Ask HN: What are some possible solutions to the IP problem?
I feel the "IP extortionists", those that acquire IP only to claim the value someone else builds, are the biggest problem.

I'm no law-talking-guy, but I've thought;

Maybe we need a "if you don't use it, you lose it" clause?

Maybe we also need better definition and enforcement of what's an "obvious" idea?

c1u··on Intelligence Council Predicts 3D Printed Organs, Megacities, Brain Chips by 2030
I can travel to almost any point on the planet in less than a day for the cost of a few days work. I can converse with billions of people instantly at almost zero cost. I have access to medical tech that makes it trivial for me to survive ailments that would have killed anyone in the last several million years. We can "see" hundreds of planets around other stars, and are finding more every day. These are just the first few that popped into my head.

Compared to all of human history, we are already superhuman.

c1u··on Hypersonic Flight ‘Breakthrough’ Could Have Us in Tokyo by Lunch
Good point. I'm not trying to start an off-topic climate change debate, just trying to step back and look at the problem a little more broadly, but there's at least one big error in my calcs as has been pointed out.
c1u··on Hypersonic Flight ‘Breakthrough’ Could Have Us in Tokyo by Lunch
ah! whoops, one too many zeros (I used $35K) :P
c1u··on Hypersonic Flight ‘Breakthrough’ Could Have Us in Tokyo by Lunch
Transportation CO2 emissions make up a tiny fraction of total greenhouse gases. Water vapour is by FAR the biggest greenhouse gas. I wonder if a 787 burns more hydrocarbons flying 250 people from NY to LA than 250 cars driving that distance? Roughly ~9000gal (2500mi 787 @ cruise) is 36gal per car. Assuming everyone gets perfect highway mileage even if they're Prius it wont get them the whole way (50MPG*36gal=1800mi). And that's not considering the energy required to build and maintain 250 Prius cars vs. the cost of one 787. The retail cost alone for 250 Prius is nearly $90M. A 787 is more like $250M, but lasts a least 3x longer than a car.

Transportation has improved since the 1960 by a HUGE amount. Modern cars, trains, and airplanes are significantly better (safer, cheaper, more efficient) than those in the 1960s. I'm curious how much travelling you did in the 1960s compared to today?

c1u··on How NASA might build its very first warp drive
I see your point, but we don't know. A one in a million event happens about once a month (Littlewood's law). It might be that there are many more rocky wet worlds than we now think there are, but we dont know that either. But we do know FTL travel is also time travel. Being able to tug big telescopes and look back and study our own stages of civilization would in itself be pretty amazing.
c1u··on How NASA might build its very first warp drive
A "warp drive" is a time travelling device as much as it's a space travelling device.

Travelling to Alpha Centauri in 2 weeks means travelling about 4 years 3 months into the past. If that holds true then leaving today, spending 6 months "at warp", you could look back on Earth in the early 1960s. After a 2 year journey Earth could be seen in the early 1800s. Travel for 25 years, and see Earth in 500BC.
