c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: Is DNS and HTTPS on a private network a problem for you?
You can get wildcard certs from Let's Encrypt, but in order to do so you have to use DNS challenges.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on A little trick to spam the spammers (2021)
Anyone know why I would get some "random" addresses if I run `nslookup hashbang.com`, but if I run `nslookup hashbang.com.` I get localhost?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Updated Proton, Unified Protection
With ProtonMail, can I change the reply-to address on the fly? With Fast Mail, I can edit the address from the compose screen.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on AV1 Video Codec
What would be a good way to go about testing this codec? Isn't video conversation a lossy activity? Would I have to start by re-ripping Blu-ray discs to negate loss in quality?

My usual playback targets are almost exclusively a web browser or Chromecast, so storing media in formats that would allow for more direct play opportunities would be fantastic.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on I'm a fucking webmaster (2016)
JavaScript does have bitwise operators. Something I was surprised by was that numbers are stored as 64 bit while all of the bitwise operators operate on 32 but numbers. This means that every operation results in a number conversion first.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: What email client do you prefer?
FairEmail[0] for Android

My favorite feature is that the app tries to remove tracking pixels. The ability to override the user in the from address is super nice too.

You can download the releases right from GitHub, too.

On top of all of that, the dev (Marcel) goes above and beyond to help solve issues you run into. Even if you haven't bought a license!

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: People who use different emails everywhere, who sold you to spammers?
I just use the domain of the site the account belongs to. If I'm getting really naughty, I will put sales@<server>
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Show HN: I made a website to search for half loaves of bread
It really is a game changer. Even just putting it in the fridge prolongs its shelf life. Just make sure to keep the bag sealed with a twist tie, to keep the bread from drying out. I also save the heels until last, as well. They make good end caps while you're finishing the rest of the loaf.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: What Happened to Evernote?
I found it hard to tell if standard notes is fully open source, as well.

My bigger gripes are that it doesn't support (markdown) formatting without a subscription, and I can't figure out how to put notes into folders.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: How to make server side code atomic?
To be fair, I haven't come across an interview where knowledge like this is checked.

Which is sad, this is more likely a bit of information a dev would need to know, instead of inverting a binary tree.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on End the Streaming Struggle with Plex
By itself, you wouldn't have access to pirated content. You would have to make the conscious action to access illegal material. Plex doesn't enable it on its own.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on My own phone number is now spam texting me
Voicemail. Why doesn't it work in this case? Do you work in sales? If so, why not use a separate "business" phone? Get the cheapest pixel you can find and enjoy the benefits of call screening. Maybe just a voip app on your current phone would work?

I'm having trouble understanding how 2 phonecalls, poses such a big problem. Please help me understand.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Why offer an Onion Address rather than just encourage browsing-over-Tor?
Could you explain this a bit more? How would this be more open than port forwarding? I don't see how someone could leverage this without exploiting whatever app is hosted as the hidden service?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on The perils of the “real” client IP
It may be an option, but as a consumer, why would this be the optimal answer? All this does is hide costs for you.

This is a problem with service. If the service doesn't want to fix it, then that sounds like a potential market opportunity, no? I'm new to thinking about the business side, but it seems like I want to remove any obstacle I can preventing a customer from using my service.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Launch HN: Requestly (YC W22) – Network debugging proxy for web and mobile
Is there a way to deal cert pinning without decompiling the app?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
Insomnia has not been a drop in replacement for me, but its "request chains" are fantastic. At this point it helps put up with its different set of problems.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on An example of why RSS is useful and important
Huginn does this well.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on FBI sounds alarm as QR code usage soars
FWIW, you can append a "+" to the end of a tinyurl link to preview the destination.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on FBI sounds alarm as QR code usage soars
Why? I'm not an Android dev but the appId just identifies an app right?

If the author doesn't have a domain, what should they do instead?

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Tell HN: Twitter is growing increasingly unusable without an account
Did we ever stop?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Decompiled 2022 Beijing Olympics Apps
Here is the breakdown from the Citizen Lab.

https://citizenlab.ca/2022/01/cross-country-exposure-analysi...

To me the scariest is the exfiltration of so much personal data to parts unknown. Often unencrypted even.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: What is your home networking setup?
As you probably know there isn't going to be a package to emulate any old service. The closest you will get are probably:

* FakeNet-NG (dev has been suspended indefinitely) [0]

* INetSim [1]

Reverse engineering, and malware analysis skills will transfer to this task directly.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Simula One vs. Quest 2 vs. Valve Index
Do you actually need to wear glasses? I guess maybe it depends on your prescription.

To me it seems for those who are nearsighted, wouldn't need glasses as the screen is very close to your face.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Ask HN: What tech stack would you use to build a new web app today?
MVC 6, was "never" released. As this answer[0] describes.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Challenge: can you view my source?
Is the page borked? It will let me view the page for a bit, and then I'm redirected to /haha. (I didn't try to inspect an element.)
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Firefox Relay
My issue with SimpleLogin is that they mutate the emails forwarded to your inbox in a manner that breaks features based on the sender. If you're using gmail's email grouping feature it gets thrown off by this. I am not sure how I would go about it, but I would guess that spam detection would become somewhat (more) difficult too.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on $ sudo rm -rf / === NPM install
I'm not sure what countermeasures that project has in place, but there are plenty of articles exploring malicious packages found there.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on GitHub stale bot considered harmful
Could you provide an example of the problem you describe?

I'm having trouble imagining it. My brain keeps telling me that the words I would search for would show up in the content even if they're used in a template. Is it maybe an issue of synonyms. Like error and exception might mean the same to one person and not another?

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Element One – All of Matrix, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram in one place
You can also self host it for free according to their website.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Xterm.js
Is this different than opening the executable from the file manager?
