c0wb0yc0d3r··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
If you or someone can find that thread I would find it an interesting read.

My cursory research indicates that a low end ryzen would make sense if you are building the board yourself. Right now, I haven’t found a new ryzen mini pc sub 200$. New N100 minis can be had for 150-175$, and if you don’t care so much about power N95 minis are even cheaper.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on OpenWrt: A Linux OS targeting embedded devices
> I tried running OpenWrt as a wired router on an x86 mini PC, and found that it had some really powerful features and was certainly rock solid as a router. But there were some major annoyances, too. For example, their documentation includes a script for expanding the root filesystem [1] that left my system unable to boot.

I have been doing this myself recently. The docs around this are pretty out of date. The docs as they’re written only work for the ext4 images if I remember correctly. I got it to work with the squashfs version, but it was really janky. The problem is the OS just writes the to the empty space at the end of the squash partition without changing the partition table. I could only successfully get it working if resized the partition on first boot before the writable overlay is created.

> And while I didn't use it long enough to make it through an upgrade, their documentation on upgrades makes the process sound very brittle (it sounded like configs for installed packages don't carry over by default) and confusing.

I feel similarly about the process. There is either a command or a place on disk where you can put files to protect them across upgrades, but I can’t remember just now. I think it works that way because it’s targeted at embedded devices where I would think you typically bake everything you need into the root file system at compile time. I’m not an embedded engineer so maybe there are better ways of doing it.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Petition to stop Google from restricting sideloading and FOSS apps
Why wait? I’ve never installed many apps on my phone, but I don’t have any problems using graphene. My bank nor credit card apps have any problem.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Petition to stop Google from restricting sideloading and FOSS apps
From what I’ve read Google’s new process sounds much like Apple’s app notarization process. Apple is still in complete control the user just isn’t required to go through the App Store.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on WebLibre: The Privacy-Focused Browser
Every open source license I’ve seen clearly states that the licensed material comes without warranty and limits liability.

What sort of accountability can be gained by knowing someone’s identity in a case like that?

c0wb0yc0d3r··on How I use Tailscale
To me WireGuard is safer than exposing services directly to the internet.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Brazil central bank to launch Pix installment feature in September
It’s a shame that it isn’t used.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Show HN: Pangolin – Open source alternative to Cloudflare Tunnels
You need a publicly routable address in the mix. You would need a way of knowing that address.

I have that same feeling with the self hosting I do. To alleviate the small amount of stress it would bring me I rent a VPS that’s public on the internet. I configure a persistent keep alive, on the client I run locally to keep a connection to the server open, no port forwarding needed.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Why is my Raspberry Pi 4 too slow as a server?
I’m not sure what electricity costs where you live, but my calculations tell me I’d have to run an intel n4000 for 5+ years before I break even compared to buying a CanaKit rpi 5.

And you’d be mislead. The video shows the original file is converted to different formats, depending on the user’s selection. The video shows jpeg to html (using AI to perform OCR?).

Pandoc but extra AI steps.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Build iOS Apps on Linux and Windows
What if there is no server? An offline first PWA could easily be served via a static web host.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Unikernel Linux (UKL) (2023)
I can only read the abstract. It mentions that applications need to be recompiled. Would that mean applications when in dotnet or java wouldn’t need modification, just their runtime would?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on An Introduction to Modern CMake
For what it’s worth I think (modern) msbuild does it the best way I’ve seen so far. It operates on a “mostly” include by default. By that I mean the compilers “know” what are valid files, and everything valid in and below the project dir is included by default. You can edit the project file if you wish to include or exclude specific files or directories. Before dotnet core, you had to specify every file (ignore by default). Visual Studio would handle that for you, but adding new files often lead to version control conflicts.

Ultimately what I’m trying to say is that msbuild has a good set of default globbing rules and it’s very easy to fine tune.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Any program can be a GitHub Actions shell
How have you found this centralized approach to work for you? Does your org require everything be built in exactly the same way?

I’ve just joined an organization that is trying to do similar, but in practice it seems nearly worthless. Templates are frequently broken, or written in ways that expect code to be built in a particular manner without any supporting docs describing the requirements.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Circuit breaker triggered in Japan for stock futures trading
So a circuit breaker is intended to prevent a giant sell off? Did this happen during the giant pandemic sell off? I don’t remember hearing about it.

Can this sort of thing happen multiple times a day?

c0wb0yc0d3r··on What If We Made Advertising Illegal?
I’ve thought about a world where ads are illegal several times. I think a better compromise might be all ads must silent and static, no movement. In my mind this includes ad carousels. That would mean that there would regulation in place stating that a digital billboard can’t switch ads more than once per day or something.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Malware found on NPM infecting local package with reverse shell
I’ve never looked at the process of making a nixpkg, but wouldn’t the review process only catch something malicious if it was added to the packaging process? Anything malicious added to the build process wouldn’t show up correct? At least not unless the package maintainer was familiar and looked themself?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on A Sneaky Phish Just Grabbed My Mailchimp Mailing List
> To further confuse things, IT repeatedly sends out fake phishing emails with links to Microsoft-owned domains with valid Microsoft SSL certificates.

The org I work for does something similar. All links are obfuscated by some scanning service, unless it’s a trap…

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Plex no Longer Offers Free Remote Playback for Personal Media
> without any port forwarding it just works.

Before folks get the wrong idea, this isn’t true. Plex uses universal plug and play to open ports in your firewall, unless you explicitly configure plex manually. At that point you still have an open port but you get to pick it.

That being said, the remote access functionality plex provides is very nice. The shocking bit but to me is that they are pricing remote play at 20$/yr. As far as I can tell you only use plex infrastructure when a direct connection can’t be made. I’m my experience that’s seldom.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
I do it this way, pay for premium and still use an ad blocker. I do it this way because there is no question whether or not I see ads. My conscience is clear because YouTube claims creators get a kickback when premium users watch their content.

For me it’s the best middle ground. I pay one bill, everyone gets paid.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Comet open source remote KVM from GL-iNet
That’s my thought too. A person cannot build any of the firmware for their routers. It’s all based on openwrt though.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to flash these with openwrt.

c0wb0yc0d3r··on How much traffic can a pre-rendered Next.js site handle?
Ah this clears it up for me. No wonder OP’s results were the way they were. Next.js uses “fast” words to describe “slow” processes.
c0wb0yc0d3r··on How much traffic can a pre-rendered Next.js site handle?
I’ve never used next.js. Wouldn’t pre-rendering a site remove dependence on any framework? It should just be html js and css right?
c0wb0yc0d3r··on Due to new tariffs, many more physical game discs may "simply not get made"
The following is mostly off topic.

For those that buy games on Gog, what has been your strategy for backing up the installers? It seems they only make the last few patches available for download. Do you download every patch, or just the installers?

c0wb0yc0d3r··on Apple takes UK to court over 'backdoor' order

The best I can think was your location data was sold by a company behind one of the apps on your phone.
