burnstek··on Hard-won lessons about money and investing
The assumption is that you work for the startup and have a critical enough position to earn equity, and therefore have more influence over its performance than that of a public company.
burnstek··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
And his being an executive at a corporate giant made this a very unorthodox and risky move. Having a great idea and a sound methodology is one thing; betting the future of one of the largest technology companies in the world on it is entirely different.
burnstek··on Microsoft Band
Comes with a free screen protector.
burnstek··on Poll: How often do you exercise?
I work about 65 hours per week. Exercise is a top priority. I either run 10k per day, spin for an hour, or do kettlebells. Eating well is also a priority. I prepare a salad every day without exception.

It's all habitual at this point. 36 y/o, 6', 150lbs. My wife is very supportive and eats well with me. I've had to sacrifice television and video games to dedicate the time to staying fit.

As a side effect, people tend to yield more professional respect to people who have this lifestyle, not that it has an iota an influence over whether or not I do it. However, overall, I'd classify it as a great career move.

My big gap is getting enough sleep. I average about 6.5 hours.

burnstek··on Prim (YC S13) Does Your Laundry. Pickup, Wash, Fold, Delivery, Awesome
It's laundry. Not terribly difficult from an operational perspective. Differentiation is the challenge, and this company seems to be doing well in that area.
burnstek··on If the NSA Trusted Edward Snowden With Our Data, Why Should We Trust the NSA?
In my university, we had a computer security program where computer scientists were heavily recruited to work for the DoD for a few years in exchange for a scholarship. One of the students I knew who ended up at the NSA was a standout, but the many others I knew were of average intellect and in many cases were below average computer scientists. These are not the level of people you want involved in mass surveillance programs.

What matters most to the NSA is your ability to pass a polygraph - not your engineering skills.

burnstek··on Bypassing Gogo’s Inflight Internet Authentication
You obviously don't fly much. This is you stealing access from me when you're on a platform meant to have just a handful of paying users.
burnstek··on Ask HN: I just got my first team lead. What should I do?
Leadership revolves around having respect for your colleagues and believing in them. This component is very similar to an ability to maintain healthy relationships with family and friends.

Don't be just another software developer destined for a career in middle management. Spend quality time with your team and get to know them as people. Find out where they excel and assign responsibilities accordingly. The listening part will then come naturally.

burnstek··on Don't. Waste. Time.
Just to touch on the essence of this article for interested parties: this concept is also known by the Japanese as "Gemba" and was popularized in industry (among many other lean principles) by Toyota's production system.
burnstek··on BankSimple invites first customers; rebrands itself as Simple
The problem is that most customers do care what the underlying bank is, especially given the events over the past few years. The world may have been ready for this five years ago, but not anymore.
burnstek··on BankSimple invites first customers; rebrands itself as Simple
This move strikes me as being a little too quaint for a financial service. I can't tell what I'd be signing up for. While their language is very friendly, it's also obtuse, and that doesn't foster trust.
burnstek··on IOS Boilerplate: A base template for iOS apps
Code to extend the Google Map component (such as a clickable BalloonOverlay, fast OverlayItem grouping). I'd contribute my own code for this to such a project.
