burnaway··on Ask HN: What do you think about “The Social Dilemma”?
Never heard about the Creel Report before, but here it is: https://archive.org/details/completereportof00unit/page/8/mo... Thanks for the tip.

burnaway··on Covid-19 in Hungary: Viktor Orbán pursues dictatorial powers
Also Hungarian here. The article summed up the law under debate correctly. Its a slippery slope that we've seen happening in other countries (Russia, which is a kind of a blueprint for this government in many respects, comes to mind). Carte blanche to do anything they please in the name of Protecting The People, suspending constitutional rights and silencing all dissenting voices, this time with jail sentences. Whenever the Covid situation gets better it's easy to make up a new national emergency with a different threat - immigrants, again, attack from EU, again, or something else. The 60% plus rural voters whose main news source is the captured state media (Russian style, again) won't really mind. Then we can stay in this "emergency doctrine" forever. No wonder why wannabe/actual dictators love crisis...

Author makes a good point at the end - it can go another way as well. Let's imagine, what if the country starts to crumble? As pezo1919 pointed out, health/healthcare is in deep trouble. What if tens of thousands die and everyone turns against Orbán? These changes will come very handy as well, won't they?

I'm trying to finish this comment real fast before they pass this law and a black car takes me away for spreading f

burnaway··on Launch HN: Ophelia (YC W20) – At-home recovery for opioid addiction
Try to uncover more angles to the "referral". Is it illegal because they receive compensation/cut? If yes, build it around "being the hero" for people not directly affected but have huge stake or motivation to help addicts (like some in this thread) - try and reach people on the edge of communities most affected by it - for example, distribute a "qualifier questionnaire" physical leaflet which gives people free consultation and 30% off list price on treatment. Your "Withdrawal Heroes" would get a pack and they could drop some off in relevant places in their communities or give to people directly - they probably know what places to hit better than you could identify effectively. The value for them is helping others; this might be your better bet anyways compared to referral $$ incentive anyways. Next step is to use people in recovery who used your system for similar little bets and more - giving talks, spreading the word in communities as part-time employees for example (some sort of "ambassadorship" for the lack of a better word). ps. I'm in Europe and only following opioid news from the distance, just want to add keep it up and good luck with the project, more stuff like this is needed happy to brainstorm or invest some more time in coming up with ideas pro bono just let me know

+1 for Matomo, it's a no brainer for any 'privacy service' to stay far away from Google Analytics.
burnaway··on Banned from Google Ads for Using Apple Card
Let me also add that "the author wishes to remain anonymous" is a usual BS for 100% affiliate-scheme funded 'we care about your privacy and here are the best tools' sites, while also claiming total independence and honest editorial process. Sure. How they don't lose all credibility instantly when it's not clear who runs it is hard for me to gauge - I can only go back to "if it's on the top SERP on Google/DuckDuckGo or main page of HN it must be valid".
burnaway··on Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
There are people with strong beliefs and opinions they are ready to fight for - within the frame of their daily job, using their free time, their own money etc. All this without being enthralled to a "bigger entity", as a part of a conspiracy, serving a special interest playing power games, or simply someone paying them. I am one of those people, in agreement with this post, I can see the OP being in this category as well. If this is all too surprising for you that is a reflection on you.
burnaway··on Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
You need to consider some users A) don't want to see ads at all (exhibit A: lot of posters in this thread) B) rather see "dumb" ads than personalized one if it comes through individual level tracking and profiling (that's me). From this perspective no amount of evidence can convince me they are "right" and I have no wish to contribute in any way to "betterment of ad quality" for the price it is proposed. This is comment is no reflection on the rest of your argument btw, just addressing the premise.

burnaway··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
I don't doubt that a lot of people use VPN's for this. I also know based on surveys and internal data that the core user base of our service is using it for privacy protection and security reasons -> against ISP data collection and snooping. I don't have a problem with people watching porn, nor with someone using VPN to support this. This conscious use case however is very different from getting an unsolicited porn popunder in your face when you are streaming a football match.

burnaway··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
I've worked in the adult industry (you can say porn) for 10 years for some of the biggest brands. I have some regrets, especially contributing in a major way to the proliferation of free porn, pushing our product to millions of users per day and negotiating advertising campaigns in the millions$ to feed the system. Many in our audience were in developing countries and no doubt a lot of them under 18. The latest studies confirm that heavy porn consumption affect adolescent's view of others and their self-perception in a negative way - reading these made me evaluate my role in that ecosystem.

The flip side of this is when I realized this is not something I want to carry on doing I just quit the industry. Now I'm working for a VPN company with a stand-out product and service, built by an honest team driven by the mission of helping people protect their privacy. I feel very content with that decision.
