burade··on The future of 32-bit Linux
It's still pointless because no MS-DOS system will be alive in 2107.
burade··on Mars’ underground brine could be a good source of oxygen
Ok, so... we've been doing all that for a hundred years, and the result is we turned our planet into an unlivable oven.
burade··on Always leave the code better than you found it
How do you know you're not introducing a bug by replacing copy/paste code with common functions?

Most of the production code I've touched I would never dare to do something like this until I had a very good understanding of the codebase as a whole.

burade··on Always leave the code better than you found it
It will only be joke once our profession unionizes. Until then, nope, not a joke. It's actually very good career advice.
burade··on Hire people who give a shit
His linkedin says Tech Lead from 2014-2016. But it doesn't mean he was tech lead from the start. He could've become tech lead on his last 3 months at the company.
burade··on Hire people who give a shit
1-why would anyone (other than you) give a shit about your company?

2-intellectual work does not translate to how many hours you put in.

burade··on How to Think for Yourself
when people achieve success too early in life they start thinking they're hot stuff
burade··on Things I Don’t Know as of 2018
That's nonsense.

The guy is a specialist. That's like asking Lionel Messi to also be good at goalkeeping.

burade··on Your brain runs your body using something like a budget
Sure, but in a healthy upbringing, it only takes 1 panic attack for a normal person to realize "oook, something's not right". Messed up people think "I'm being weak".
burade··on Your brain runs your body using something like a budget
>but you'd be surprised how many people don't know their own feelings.

Probably grew up in abusive-ish households where the parents didn't respect the child's emotions. I only found out I have severe anxiety when I was like 27 years old. It took me a year of having full blown panic attacks to realize what it was. I thought I was just being "weak", because that's what I was taught my whole life.

burade··on Technology as It Should Be
That's not a fair assessment. You're judging human beings by their worst tendencies, which is to get addicted to stupid things like Instagram and Coca Cola.
burade··on The Tyranny of Merit
>It’s not a surprise that the Ivy league exists to educate the children of the wealthy.

It was very much a surprise to me until I was like, 25-26 years old, which was when I really learned how the world works.

There's some very strong propaganda out there that you can do anything if you just apply yourself.

burade··on Production-Oriented Development
> It makes you a better engineer,

Nah, it makes you a better serf. Are you working at Amazon and getting paid 400k/year? Sure, do whatever. but regular devs making 70k shouldn't put up with this bullshit.

burade··on Production-Oriented Development
Are construction workers on call for the buildings they build? Maybe. But they'll be called like once every 5 years. Because their industry actually has standards.

Devs think they're hot stuff, when in reality we're probably one of the most abused professions out there. (I'm talking about regular devs, not people who were born in wealth/went to good schools etc)

burade··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
God please no. Heal first, then get a dog.
burade··on 13-Year-Old, Nicholas Sharkey, Creates a RISC-V Core
Did he? Because most of these stories turn out to be "It was really his parents who did most of the work"
burade··on Python overtakes Java to become the second-most popular programming language
There's nothing to be hated about any programming language ever. People confuse "I don't understand it" with "I hate it".
burade··on The Laptev Sea hasn't frozen
Are you serious right now? Do you realize how hard it is to predict this stuff?

You actually expect them to nail it down to the year? lol

burade··on Interview with David Vélez, founder of Brazil’s Nubank
This sounds like survivorship bias.

Theranos tried to make something hard, burned through money, and it didn't work out.

burade··on Hackers hijack and publish mental health data of hundreds of people
>They didn't choose to feel that way.

They weren't born that way either. I guarantee you there has been some massive childhood/adolescence trauma in this person's life. If this person is a woman, then it's veeeery easy to understand why she feels this way.
