bunkydoo··on Sharpest ever view of the Andromeda Galaxy (2015)
This is extremely cool. I remember going to the observatory as a kid and looking at Andromeda through the telescopes. It's amazing to think we will be one with that galaxy someday, millions of years from now
bunkydoo··on Home Computers Connected to the Internet Aren't Private, Court Rules
There is nothing private about how 90% of internet companies make their money. Expecting otherwise in an industry that isn't geared towards privacy is naive. I wish the court would see it in a different light. But if you want to send a private note, encrypt a letter offline using PGP, print it, and send via US Mail.
bunkydoo··on Study suggests that the “brain training” industry may be a placebo
Well this doesn't really come as a huge surprise. these brain training apps seem to target logical repetitive tasks that would only train your brain to be better at doing just that - logical repetitive tasks. I do however think it is very possible to train the brain, it just hasn't been put in the form of an app or autonomous computer software yet.
bunkydoo··on Why Young Americans Are Giving Up on Capitalism
I think people should be given a stark choice - either eat government provisioned rations, take public transport, and live in public housing (socialism) or contribute to a fluctuating capitalist economy and roll the dice a bit. Then likely make a bit more money on average, although less predictable (capitalism)
bunkydoo··on Bloomberg – Blockchain Company's Smart Contracts Were Dumb
You really can never say in code we trust entirely, because we say the same thing about our state of the art encryption today that the Nazis said about enigma in WW2 "It would take more than every human lifetime combined to crack this code!" But then the next paradigm of computing sets in, and you have a Turing machine built, or a Quantum brute force attack become possible on RSA 4096 rendering it as useless as enigma code. The fact of the matter is you can't declare a system that can not update it's own software "Autonomous" - someone will attack.
bunkydoo··on Electric vehicle battery costs rapidly declining, Tesla cited as leading
The big problem lies still in the fact that most electricity is generated from coal and nuclear. Every Tesla on the road today is effectively a coal powered car with the potential to be converted to green energy. Solar panels likely being the equilibrium. But the decline in battery cost is good, means it won't be long before they stop losing 1k on every car sold
bunkydoo··on FBI wants access to browser history without a warrant in terrorism, spy cases
Well it honestly depends what classifies a terrorism or spy case as such. I could see how this could be easily abused in many regards, but also how it could help someone do their job. Double edged sword really, but I do wish the people had more of a say in these matters instead of just hearing about more liberty being lost via the news :/
bunkydoo··on The Art of Closing
Coffee is for closers.
bunkydoo··on The DAO is effectively on hold to decide whether flaws exist and how to fix them
I will say it has a shot, it's not as risky as say buying a shady altcoin during a pump. But it sure as hell has the possibility of crapping out entirely.
bunkydoo··on Show HN: Map of immigration to the U.S. since 1820
We're gonna build a dome around the continental US and make the united nations pay for it!!
bunkydoo··on US Set to Approve Private Moon Mission
I really don't understand why SpaceX doesn't do the Moon. A Moon base relay is FAR more meaningful to our established presence in space, and a fallback location for global conflict.
bunkydoo··on Scientists Find Form of Crispr Gene Editing with New Capabilities
People who think strong AI will cause a violent apocalypse are gravely mistaken. CRISPR gene editing is the eminent domain of conscious AI, and a conscious machine would seek to create designer organisms to inhabit other worlds as well as potentially birth humans superior to what we know today to become leaders of our sociological hierarchies. It would take just a few generations to rid our race of things like depression, anxiety and mental illness with this kind of intervention. While providing the opportunity to increase diversity to a level where no two humans would be alike physically.
bunkydoo··on Facebook disabling messaging in its mobile web app to push people to Messenger
Well this means I'm done for good with Facebook. My disabled account will soon be deleted I guess, messenger is just packed with spyware :(
bunkydoo··on Russia has a new robot soldier and it's a little troubling
Well, if we would just put ethics aside and go down the road of reproductive cloning, we could have a clone army. And by the logic of Star Wars - Clones > Droids.
bunkydoo··on I've Been Waiting For The Oculus Rift, But Now It's Sitting In My Closet
VR is going to be somewhat like the advent of the 3D television in 2010-ish. Every manufacturer will make one, few people will buy one, and the people who do will likely only use it on novelty occasions. VR is really only a stepping stone to augmented reality, and mixed reality mobile operating systems. On a side note Oculus and WhatsApp seem to be some of the dumbest expenditures Facebook could have ever made. 13 billion dollars for a messaging app. Thats 13 trips to the moon and back... But fuck it, we will just eat Cheetos and do a computer simulation of a moon mission in an Oculus. #MillennialLyfe
bunkydoo··on Ethereum’s $150M DAO Opens as Researchers Call for a Halt
You've obviously never heard of extradition have you?
bunkydoo··on Ethereum’s $150M DAO Opens as Researchers Call for a Halt
This ultimately ends with Vitalik receiving a subpoena from the feds on behalf of a U.S. based investor who loses and gets pissed. Then he either complies and builds a backdoor for Ethereum, or he gets banned from the U.S. has trouble going back to Russia because they want the same thing. So he will ultimately become like the Bobby Fischer of crypto in effort to not give government backdoor access to Ethereum. Will it work? Tune in next week!
bunkydoo··on Is Facebook eavesdropping on phone conversations?
Well, either we are going to see a Facebook exodus happen due to privacy concerns (unlikely) or now almost everyone is comfortable being watched 24/7 and the next wave of apps cough SNAPCHAT will learn to exploit people recording every moment of their lives thinking it actually goes away. (unfortunate)
bunkydoo··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
https://imgur.com/gallery/7drHiqr It's happening.
bunkydoo··on Sam Altman's Bubble Talk Bet Is 1 Year Old
I would not call tech industry a bubble by any means. However, since my work took me away from Silicon Valley - I have to say there are almost no startups that have really changed my life in any noticeable way. All I have watched happen is my new smartphones and laptops get thinner, and the apps on them switch to flat design language. Glass was neat, more novelty though. Cardboard was cool, also a novelty - plus I don't game so VR doesn't effect me (yet) and on top of that, neither of these were made by a startup - but a huge corporate entity. I thought back in 2010 I would be experiencing my entire tech life through Augmented reality by at least 2015. Needless to say, I am not. :(
bunkydoo··on Coinbase Co-founder: Ethereum Is the Forefront of Digital Currency
Ethereum is definitely cool, but I stand by Bitcoin as the best solution for a "public sector" crypto
bunkydoo··on Google's Paris HQ raided in tax probe
Ouch. Part of me thinks the French government would allow this to happen due to them being non-compliant with that 'right to be forgotten' request.
bunkydoo··on The Tor Project: Building the Next Generation of Onion Services
I still really don't understand why people keep developing Tor over I2P - I2P is clearly the better protocol offering complete untraceable anonymity and a chance to secceed from the stigma of Tor...
bunkydoo··on Snowden calls for whistleblower shield after claims by new Pentagon source
Well most people aren't even aware of all the other stuff Snowden took and is effectively selling to the highest bidder (now the Russians) over time for asylum. I appreciate his intent, but he went about it in the wrong way. He doesn't care about America, and that is abundantly clear. If he really cared about this country, he would have worked to improve this system and take the element of human nature out of ECHELON and PRISM program by working to develop the system to walk on its own without human operators that have sexuality, ideas, beliefs, religion, illnesses, and ultimately perceptions that influence the mission at large.
bunkydoo··on Going dark: online privacy and anonymity for normal people
Here's the thing, if you are a normal person - you aren't going to read a guide on something like this. I have a 1 sentence guide on this for the 'normal person' - If you wouldn't want your grandma to see it, just don't enter it in an internet browser.
bunkydoo··on Theories on the etymology of 'strawberry'
If you take a straw and poke through the bottom tip and up - removes the stem ;)
bunkydoo··on Stoned drivers are safer than drunk ones, new federal data show
I'm a bit curious if the "any illegal drug" column includes LSD or hallucinogens. Part of me thinks most people have the common sense not to drive while on such a substance, part of me thinks there would be no way to gather data
bunkydoo··on Building a wearable camera
Did something similar to this with a raspberry pi, a pair of 70's ray ban bullet hole shooter glasses and a spy cam a few years back. Just got a cam that let me ditch the pi, slim it down to a Google glass type size, and stream the video to a smartphone
bunkydoo··on A former CIA spy has revealed his key role in the arrest of Nelson Mandela
I wonder what would happen if we just told everyone at the CIA to go on a 1 year vacation. We might have world peace
bunkydoo··on Hidden Microphones Part of Government Surveillance Program in the Bay Area
If I really gave a damn, had 1000 bucks to blow, and had no life I could go plant hidden microphones, pinhole video cameras, and more in just about every conceivable public place too. If anyone argued or brought me to court - I could demonstrate how this is absolutely no different than everyone "secondhand recording" me in their little snap stories and instagrams which do go online forever. My point is, this is some small potatoes 1980's style shit that is nothing compared to NSA Echelon (which I find to be actually a fascinating technology if it weren't so malleable to abuse by human nature) If Echelon were an independently operating AI system that had algorithms that identified criminal activity, then used soft paternalism in the form coercing unaware law enforcement personnel into making "chance" encounters with would-be criminals (random traffic stop, or passing them by on the street), the psychology of the criminal would be to stop doing whatever their doing because they feel more watched when they are doing said crime; although the law enforcement agent may never be directly aware of the criminals communications or conduct. I can deal with surveillance all day, no sweat. Totalitarian censorship is my problem, and that doesn't appear to be happening stateside.
