Hello margin-call, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of margin-call

bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
H1B is a noble program to help support the economic development of India from Indian perspective. From an American perspective it’s robbing Americans of well paying jobs right in our own country.
bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
The beautiful thing about being an American is that we don’t segregate ourselves into tribes and castes anymore. I know some countries still have separate castes but fortunately we don’t.

Answer to 1-4: yes fewer H1Bs is a good thing. Everything else you said is just hot air and not worth a respond. While we are at it, let’s have fixed equal per country limit it so that no single country could hijack our tech industry anymore.

bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
Good luck with that approach. Indian tech managers in the US are some of the most biased people in the world. They will find all the missing-semi-colon reasons to not hire an American and hire an Indian H1B instead. Money is no object because it’s the company and shareholders’ money.
bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
Change quota to limit and put a small number on it. Uncouple that number from the foreign country’s population size and couple it to the unemployment and underemployment rate of the CS grads in the US instead. The rest of your points is just an Indian H1B person’s wishlist.
bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
It’s not just because of being afraid of losing H1B. Even the Indian developers in India behave the exact same way. They are extremely envious of their foreign counterparts and often sabotage the project through passive aggressive ways. They are even more envious of other Indians that have better jobs in India. They will often try to overcompensate by astronautic architecture designs.

You know what the most important people should be when considering what is fair? Americans. Why should American policy care if fewer qualified Indians don’t get in? If less qualified Thais are available then fewer than the limit will be issued. The limit is not there to serve Indians.

The limit should be there to prevent the industry from further concentration and becoming a subsidiary of a foreign government like India. There is a national security element to this also.

bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
The only people that matters to Indian tech managers in the US is being able to hire more Indian H1Bs. It’s not their money. It’s the company and shareholders’ money so they can pay whatever amount the government dictates.
bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
So your position is: make it an even juicier deal for Indian H1Bs and screw the unemployed and underemployed Americans.
bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
Ask the countless unemployed and underemployed CS and CE and EE grads. They have a simple answer: give them a job first.

Until local grads are fully employed, H1B should be limited to a fixed and equal amount per country per year. That’s fair. No more Indian managers hiring only Indian H1Bs. If they need the foreign talents so much let them hire some Irish or South Korean H1Bs.

bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
That makes no sense. Are you saying just because India has more people than Thailand, more Indian should be able get this Visa? That’s completely unfair Thai men, women, and the ones in between.

Should India be able to send more soccer teams to the World Cup also?

bugbuddy··on US signals intention to rethink job H-1B lottery
This is complete BS. There are plenty of good candidates all over the world including the US. To make it fair, just put a 1000 limit per country per year.

The problem with LLMs and all other modern statistical large-data-driven solutions’ approach is that it tries to collapse the entire problem space of general problem solving to combinatorial search of the permutations of previously solved problems. Yes, this approach works well for many problems as we can see with the results with huge amount of data and processing utilized.

One implicit assumption is that all problems can be solved with some permutations of existing solutions. The other assumption is the approach can find those permutations and can do so efficiently.

Essentially, the true-believers want you to think that rearranging some bits in their cloud will find all the answers to the universe. I am sure Socrates would not find that a good place to stop the investigation.

It sounds like people should just ignore those pesky ROI questions. In the long run, we are all dead so let’s just invest now and worry about the actual low level details of delivering on the economy-wide efficiency later.

As capital allocators, we can just keep threatening the worker class with replacing their jobs with LLMs to keep the wages low and have some fun playing monopoly in the meantime. Also, we get to hire these super smart AI researchers people (aka the smartest and most valuable minds in the world) and hold the greatest trophies. We win. End of story.

bugbuddy··on ChatGPT agent: bridging research and action
Back in my youthful days, educated and informed people chastised using the internet to self-diagnose and self-treat. I completely missed the memo on when it became a good idea to do so with LLMs.

Which model should I ask about this vague pain I have been having in my left hip? Will my insurance cover the model service subscription? Also, my inner thigh skin looks a bit bruised. Not sure what’s going on? Does the chat interface allow me to upload a picture of it? It won’t train on my photos right?

Could you please expand on your point about expanding scopes? I am waiting earnestly for all the cheaper services that these expansions promise. You know cheaper white-collar-services like accounting, tax, and healthcare etc. The last reports saw accelerating service inflation. Someone is lying. Please tell me who.

It sounds like you are trying to restate the Chinese room argument to come to a different conclusion. Unfortunately, I am too lazy to follow your argument closely because it is a bit hard to read at a glance.
bugbuddy··on Chain of thought monitorability: A new and fragile opportunity for AI safety
That’s a good explanation for the behavior. It is sad that the natural direction of the competition drives the products to be less transparent. That is a win for open-weight models.
bugbuddy··on Chain of thought monitorability: A new and fragile opportunity for AI safety
Real deception requires real agency and internally-motivated intents. LLM can be commanded to or can appear to deceive but it cannot generate the intent to do so on its own. So not real deception that rabbit-hole dwellers believe in.

Are there hidden tokens in the Gemini 2.5 Pro thinking outputs? All I can see in the thinking is high level plans and not actual details of the “thinking.” If you ask it to solve a complex algebra equation, it will not actually do any thinking inside the thinking tag at all. That seems strange and not discussed at all.
bugbuddy··on LLM Inevitabilism
I heard majority of the users are techies asking coding questions. What do you sell to someone asking how to fix a nested for loop in C++? I am genuinely curious. Programmers are known to be the stingiest consumers out there.

You are right. I gambled everything away but the drop is much more than single digit at this point. I was concentrating my bets very aggressively. It is sinking in. Fortunately I will have some adult children who might be doing ok. I hope they will be willing to lend a helping hand. I am feeling so much shame. I cannot stomach my current predicament.

I had been super bullish on US stocks and I went super long on margins. Now, I am looking at losing everything and starting over from scratch in my 60s. I can’t even hold water down right now. I feel like I need to go to the ER. Pray for me.
