budududuroiu··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
> What you're saying is we should allow kids to buy tobacco, to gamble, to purchase Meth and Heroine because Kids get around restrictions anyway

This is false equivalence. All of the above are vices that objectively carry more harm than good. There's no inherent harm in using a computer, there's a subset of ways in which using a computer can be harmful, which kids can be taught how to avoid or navigate, there's no subset of meth use that isn't harmful

budududuroiu··on The next era of social media: built and run in Europe, ruled by our laws
All these "European social media" projects are, imo, cash grabs trying to capitalise on the populist "European digital sovereignty" sentiment.

If your goal was social media "built and run in Europe, ruled by our laws", you'd just host a Mastodon instance and donate those EU funds to Mastodon GmbH

budududuroiu··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
Ok, I will do my homework on the proposal of the EU Identity Wallet but from my skimming on topics about it, it the tokens derived from my ID would be able to de-anonymise me online.
budududuroiu··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
Age verification is one of the dumbest things humanity is wasting it's resources on.

From every political angle, the messaging seems to be "we want you to give birth to many kids, but we don't trust you raising them"

budududuroiu··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
> As long as you trust the government that gave out the ID

I'm a citizen of a European Union member, I trust my government to issue me an ID and use said ID in my interactions with the state, I do not trust my state with anything more than that.

budududuroiu··on Keep Android Open
Maybe stupid question, we keep seeing "LLM figures out math problem humans couldn't, LLM finds security vulnerability by looking at hexdumps for 6 months straight. How hard or expensive would it be to let some LLMs loose on reverse engineering all the proprietary driver binary blobs?

People mentioning forking Android is hard, how easy do LLMs make this?

budududuroiu··on Keep Android Open
The Italian digital ID wallet is already in fact banning GrapheneOS and other ROMs [1], the EU doesn't mandate that member states have to allow non-Android/iOS apps [2]

budududuroiu··on European Tech Alternatives
Realistically, what you're asking for won't happen unless there's a strong push for Federalisation.

Unfortunately, most Eastern Bloc countries are led into the false belief that the EU is encroaching on their ways of life and "making them eat ze bugs", and the Brussels elite is more concerned with using their slim remaining political capital to push restrictions on internet freedoms rather than federalisation.

budududuroiu··on Claude Code talking about unexpected, different projects
Is this just a result of aggressive caching? Like, "ya this code kinda seems like this other one I've computed, lemme just serve this past output"
budududuroiu··on America's pensions can't beat Vanguard but they can close a hospital
Im gonna speculate they were referring to the part of private equity where you buy businesses to load them up with debt to buy more businesses ad nauseum
budududuroiu··on America's pensions can't beat Vanguard but they can close a hospital
> Second, that capital is trapped in an institutional arrangement that charges enormous fees to match the performance of a simple index fund, while the money deployed through these intermediaries actively harms the communities pensioners live in: buying up their housing, closing their hospitals, bankrupting their local employers, gutting their newspapers.

This is the same argument that Ann Pettifor has about how the poor allocation of pension funds is because "it’s much easier to make money from gambling and speculating than it is from investing in the land on the one hand, in the broader sense of the word, or investing in labor"

budududuroiu··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
I'm a new GrapheneOS user and stopped using Uber as altogether. Taxis aren't that bad where I'm at, and cheaper than Uber
budududuroiu··on GLM-5: Targeting complex systems engineering and long-horizon agentic tasks
> A human can still own the output from an LLM.

It specifically highlights human authorship, not ownership

budududuroiu··on GLM-5: Targeting complex systems engineering and long-horizon agentic tasks
> The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has affirmed a district court ruling that human authorship is a bedrock requirement to register a copyright, and that an artificial intelligence system cannot be deemed the author of a work for copyright purposes

> The court’s decision in Thaler v. Perlmutter,1 on March 18, 2025, supports the position adopted by the United States Copyright Office and is the latest chapter in the long-running saga of an attempt by a computer scientist to challenge that fundamental principle.

I, like many others, believe the only way AI won't immediately get enshittified is by fighting tooth and nail for LLM output to never be copyrightable

budududuroiu··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Platforms want this because it means they can get rid of the mountains of money they were paying for moderators to keep "child unfriendly" content off their platform

"If your kid is on Discord, and sees something they shouldn't, it's their or your fault, not ours"

budududuroiu··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
Well, to get the death penalty you have to be charged. I actually think Singapore laws on what could get you the death penalty are pretty clear, and you'd be stupid to violate them. Being detained without trial seems scarier imo
budududuroiu··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
this kinda comment damn jialat sia. come outside settle
budududuroiu··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
TIL detention without trial is a thing in Singapore [^1], ministers love to brag about increasing the severity of detention without trial [^2], and that the longest someone was held in detention without trial in Singapore was 23+9 years [^3]. That person was never charged.

budududuroiu··on Leaving, Starting Over, and Not Living in Fear
Somehow this article found me at the right time in my life
budududuroiu··on France dumps Zoom and Teams as Europe seeks digital autonomy from the US
This is why I personally believe that the "anyone is allowed to vote for anyone" style of democracy is really dumb, and Chinese "democracy" (whatever that is), is superior for governance.
budududuroiu··on Spain to ban social media access for under-16s, PM Sanchez says
It is not preemptive cynicism. My issue isn't with private corporations having access to my data, it's with my government having access to my social media profile.
budududuroiu··on Spain to ban social media access for under-16s, PM Sanchez says
> Where does the mass deanonymisation enter into this?

How is it not deanonymisation when your tax ID is inextricably linked to your social media profile?

budududuroiu··on Spain to ban social media access for under-16s, PM Sanchez says
So... de-facto mass deanonymisation of all Spanish social media users? I see a lot of supporters of these policies either not acknowledge that you can't identify under-16yo without identifying over-16yos.
budududuroiu··on Show HN: Moltbook – A social network for moltbots (clawdbots) to hang out

well, seems like this has been solved now

budududuroiu··on Employers, please use postmarked letters for job applications (2025)
We just found ourselves a new industry to contribute to GDP growth
budududuroiu··on Please don't say mean things about the AI I just invested a billion dollars in
Well, at this moment, the evil things done with technology vastly surpass the good things done with technology.

Democratisation of tech has allowed for more good to happen, centralisation the opposite. AI is probably one of the most centralisation-happy tech we've had in ages.

budududuroiu··on Refusing to Use Twitter
The original saying was "Twitter is free because you pay with your mental health".

Also stopped using Twitter/X. Immediate mental health++. I was afraid I was losing access to the "pulse" of ML/AI, but the opposite actually happened when I replaced a Twitter feed of shallow AI takes with Huggingface's Daily Papers email list [1].

More papers read, less shallow takes

budududuroiu··on Apple, What Have You Done?
Just finished my switch. Dumped my iPhone + Macbook Pro + iPad Pro + Apple Watch + Airpods setup for a Framework 13 + GrapheneOS Pixel 10 Pro + Seiko watch and wired earbuds.

I run NixOS, it's incredibly easy to do anything I want by just pointing Claude at my dotfiles and telling it "I want this", applying, and then reverting if I don't like the results.

The switch came more from a realisation that Apple devices are becoming media/slop consumption devices, rather than devices that run my workflows for me.

budududuroiu··on Apple, What Have You Done?
icloudpd - https://github.com/icloud-photos-downloader/icloud_photos_do...

for the rest of the migration I had to take it piece by piece, luckily my iPhone had enough storage, I got iCloud to download everything to my iPhone, then syncthing-ed everything to another machine. I then backed up everything that I just downloaded from iCloud to a Hetzner Storage Box via restic.

budududuroiu··on Apple, What Have You Done?
I downloaded all my photos from iCloud about a month ago. That was the last task on the monumental "leave the Apple walled garden" task list.

Life on the outside is really nice. You can just... do things.
