Call that lack of imagination

buboard··on Scientists’ warning on affluence
This is not a good article and it has a very patronizing/inflammatory title. There is only 1 figure and that one is , if anything , hopeful. It shows that GDP growth has bent the curve of CO2 since the 2010s. They seem to be arguing about what was happening in the 20th century without taking into account current trends?

This is supposed to be a review, but it doesn't really review much, they make various statements with references, but they often do not state the facts which they are referring to. There are also grammatical errors

An example: > The positional consumption behaviour of the super-affluent thus drives consumption norms across the population, for instance through their excessive air travel, as documented by Gössling73.

That Gosling73 study is a 2017 study of 10 celebrities including Meg whitman, emma watson, felix von derleden and Karl lagerfeld (are these people considered influential?) Celebrities and the "affluent" are different things. Plus i believe most air travel in the past 10 years was "influenced" by middle-to-low income influencers on youtube/instagram/etc. Importantly, that paper presents conjectures but no data that people are actually following the flight patterns of celebrities.

> Whilst a number of countries in the global North have recently managed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while still growing their economies30, it is highly unlikely that such decoupling will occur more widely in the near future, rapidly enough at global scale and for other environmental impacts

Why not? Every technology that the west built was quickly adopted by the rest of the world. What kind of inane/ahistorical statement is that ?

remote work has a self-reinforcing dynamic. the office is not as attractive when half the employees are not around. people get spoiled by having so much more control of their time. Plus the pandemic is dragging too long already and we are still nowhere near next winter's wave.
buboard··on Ask HN: What's broken about the internet?
discovery . basically discovery through google is bimodal: either the same 5 top sites, or horrible SEO trash. Gimme answers from forums when i m looking for them, please

Mobile-everything craze. No we don't need to turn everything to information-sparse, inflexible mobile replicas. Give us more density, there's still a zoom-in function

kill the cloud. re-decentralize

buboard··on Ask HN: Is DHH's constant shouting a marketing tactic?
Are you asking me? Sure it could be, what's the problem with it? So many companies start fake outrages, he does it to the detriment of his own name and reputation, that's more honest.
buboard··on Apple Threatens to Remove App 'Hey' from App Store over No In-App Subscriptions
See, the problem is you made an app for it. why?

doesnt ios have a mail app ?

why would you want to lock yourself inside an app store anyway

buboard··on Apple rejects Hey for second time, threatens removal from App Store

buboard··on EU opens Apple antitrust investigations into App Store and Apple Pay practices
What really needs to be done, without "planning the market": Require browser engine competition. This can be legally valid considering that the web itself is an essential utility, since a lot of government functions go through it. App stores are not essential (and i hope they ll never be). Therefore, access to the web should be high priority and high quality, therefore browser engine freedom is sine qua non. This could lead to a virtuous cycle of finally making web apps work well on iOS, which will also break the chains of many developers.

The web is our common , open platform that nobody owns. We should be protecting it in the mobile market

Let apple own their app store, but not to the detriment of the web

buboard··on EU opens Apple antitrust investigations into App Store and Apple Pay practices
Yeah spotify shows the way. If you like developers, buy their apps and make them exclusive, dont lock them into your garden with 1000 tricks.
buboard··on Architects have designed a Martian city for the desert outside Dubai
Just about every architectural firm has made big bucks by selling glorious empty buildings to those oil barons. It's almost comical to hear them talk of "sustainability" in the world's least sustainable place and autocracy, where the coming tourism collapse collides with decades of unprecedented real estate waste, borrowed money and oil drying up.
buboard··on Ask HN: How do you read long PDFs?

buboard··on Source code of Germany’s official covid-19 contact tracing app
Covid has been curtailed without the need for these apps (in all the places that opened up). Why do people insist on pushing them to people? There is no evidence they work, even when with months of testing. No matter how anonymized you try to make them, the authorities and evil state actors will find ways to abuse the data -- it's like a law of nature now that all data will be abused.

E.g. in case of a bombing or riots, the police can arrest bystanders and use phones to tell who was standing next to whom.

Pushing these for security theater has long term bad consequences. I was hoping people would know that after the 1000th repetition but alas, people are incorrigible

buboard··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
millions of app stores developers cover their ears
buboard··on GitHub abandons 'master' and 'slave' terms to avoid row
replica doesn't imply a power relationship. Master controls the slave , which is accurate

- Master database tells the slaves what to write

- Master clock tells slave the time

- Master HDD controls the computer , so indirectly controls secondary -- though in this case slave HDD is more auxiliary rather than subordinate (this terminology isnt used anymore anyway)

In any case, master/slave terminology is historical and generally unproblematic, except apparently in the US, but so many words are problematic for someone somewhere that it's not wise to go down that road

buboard··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
Another sign of the tech regression is that we don't have a robust alternative that does the things Flash did. No easy-to-use and publish editor, no robust video/audio streaming server/client combo. Today's HTML alternatives are so convoluted and bad to integrate that we need to use proprietary/closed platforms (e.g. Unity, youtube)

Apple never really loved the web. Web animation and gaming are still behind what you could very easily do with flash, webrtc+video are horrible battery drains etc. Ironic, considering that one of the reasons that Jobs bashed flash was that it drained the battery. And that he replaced "not open" flash games with his own Closed Platform and App Store garden. The whole reasoning in that letter reeks of hypocrisy , it should be obvious in retrospect.

On top of that , modern "HTML sites" are much worse performance-wise than the equivalent flash. Abandon flash : sure, it's old and unsafe and nobody wants browser plugins. But make sure you have a decent alternative first. We don't.

buboard··on After GitHub CEO backs Black Lives Matter, workers demand an end to ICE contract
It would be considered a bad look for vc-supported companies to accept ICE after this. Which is all the better for smaller bootstrapped competitors outside SV, or even outside the US
