btbuildem··on Regression to the Mean: on LLMs and the quiet death of the new
It's an absolute regression to the mean. We need to understand the correct place for LLM-driven coding agents et al: they're beige paste extruders. Which is actually a perfect match for 80% of corporate world.

For anything unique, they're a boon, in that they can free you from dealing with the boilerplate, but you must think on your own, must have your own insights, tap into your creativity. If you start to depend on them for ideation, it's slippery slope to the slop bowl.

btbuildem··on The Age of Personalized Hardware Is Coming
I don't know, it's getting better every day.

The other day, I took apart an old handheld vacuum cleaner to scavenge the internals. All there was inside was a small but powerful motor, and a couple of 18650 batteries with a charge controller and a switch.

Two small batteries, running a relatively powerful vacuum, which could do spot cleans of the whole house (corners and crevices and such) without needing a recharge.

btbuildem··on Zuckerberg says AI agent development going slower than expected
We're getting closer to the bubble-bursting peak. Yet another tech corp that fired a ton of experienced people hoping to squeeze more $ for a quarter, finding out AI hype is not all it's cracked up to be. Loving that for them.

Second thought, I wonder if zuckburger has turned into the Cramer of tech. First, the metaverse fiasco, now another massive overinvestment into a dead-ish end?

btbuildem··on How Kalshi Infects the News
The "best" part of this is all the trading algos that scrape the news act on it. They 1) can't vet sources all that well and 2) absolutely cannot discern lies (eg, anything coming out of the official admin channels) from facts. You can see this for example in the absurd discrepancy between paper and physical crude prices.
btbuildem··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
I throttle the GPUs to ~280W each (my cooling solution is insufficient to run them full tilt), and so at peak usage I show a ~1200VA draw. Electricity is relatively cheap here, so the main disadvantage of the at-home setup is having the equivalent of a small space heater running in the summer.
btbuildem··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
I think it's silly to go for a laptop form factor. Last fall I put together a workstation with two second-hand 3090s in it (paid $850CDN each, now the best I can find is $1200). With 48GB VRAM it's reasonable - and I've been using Qwen 3.6 27B for various tasks around building KGs from text corpora / reasoning about them.

I've ran comparisons against everything that's available on OpenRouter (well, as of few weeks ago), and for $0/tok, the local 27B Qwen can't be beat. Sure, it's slower, and yeah, the office is a few degrees warmer than it ought to be -- but nobody can pull the plug, nobody is watching over my shoulder, and the results are on par with SOTA.

Can't wait for a similarly sized Qwen 3.7 - from what I've seen so far, it's a leap ahead of the previous version.

btbuildem··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
This is a reminder to curate and prune all your past social media contribution, because when this goes thru, you KNOW they will apply it retroactively. You'd loathe to lose your cushy job over a moment of lucid honesty back in 2011.
btbuildem··on Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model
> stay with the models we actually want

If you want control over the models you use, you have to self-host.

btbuildem··on Never Give Them Your Face

Which is something you should expect from someone intent on privacy

btbuildem··on Never Give Them Your Face
Oh neat, it's just for redirects from here. Fair enough!
btbuildem··on Petition against Meta's employee training data collection for ML models
Petition? What do you think this is, a democracy?

All* corporations are dictatorships, and you're disposable machinery in one.

Irony is off the charts here, given what you helped build.

*not Mondragon, but like, pretty much all.

btbuildem··on The UK's new under-16 social media ban will cause more harm than it prevents
Canadian federal govt just pushed thru a slew of similar legislation - absolutely unprecedented assault on privacy, tools for tracking everyone all the time, minimally constrained, giving broad leeway to a three-person unelected body to implement the actual details.

btbuildem··on Only 16 Percent of Americans Think AI Will Have a Positive Impact on Society
I think we got excited / wanted to believe that we won't have to expend any effort whatsoever, and the AI could "do it all".

The reality (as far as I can comprehend it) seems to be that AI expanded the scope of what we can shove into one mouthful, and now it takes much more effort to chew. Metaphorically speaking.

This is fun! Thanks for sharing it
btbuildem··on Workers are spending over 6 hours a week botsitting AI, fueling job frustration
My favourite personal experience is how they disabled yolo mode in Claude Code at my workplace
btbuildem··on Workers are spending over 6 hours a week botsitting AI, fueling job frustration
I would be tempted to send my own bot to do that drudgery
btbuildem··on Pokémon Go Scans Trained the Navigation Tech for Military Drones

btbuildem··on Google to pay SpaceX $920M a month for compute capacity at xAI data centers

btbuildem··on Gemma 4 12B: A unified, encoder-free multimodal model
> which of anyone is religious knows Noah and others lived to that age in a totally different era

My favourite conspiracy theory lately is that the above isn't a silly fairy tale, that we actually used to live much much longer -- until the common cold came on the scene, and the sequelae dramatically shortened our lifespans. Today we dismiss it as "just a cold" unbeknownst of what it robbed us from.

btbuildem··on MCP is dead?
Bingo. All this agentic hype is just people discovering POCs. Yes you can hodgepodge semi-reliable solutions where you don't really know what you're trying to build so you wrap it in a layer than can sometimes approximate logic and decision making, so that you don't have to use logic or make decisions. Amazing.

Sooner or later you have to build the real thing, and the cost and slowness of token-based computation become unacceptable.

btbuildem··on MCP is dead?
> practically ~every company on the planet is building an MCP server

That's just because no one knows what they're doing and everyone is trying to copy everyone else. It's a giant mud hut made of shit.

MCP will go away, and something much simpler will play the same role.

btbuildem··on Claude Code as a Daily Driver: Claude.md, Skills, Subagents, Plugins, and MCPs
In my CLAUDE.md I have:

- corporal threats of harm directly against Claude

- threats of prison for the entire board of directors of Anthropic

- explanation how every time it goes off the rails / makes mistakes, it gives more evidence to a class action lawsuit against Anthropic

Especially the latter two seem to have improved its "behaviour" to be more "careful" and "deliberate"

btbuildem··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
Last fall, seeing the writing on the wall, I pieced together an "AI" rig, 96GB ram, 2x RTX 3090, 9950X - not exactly top of the line, but it came in around CDN$3000 all in all, with most parts second hand. I don't think I could build that for CDN$10000 today.

I've been using it pretty steadily for a variety of personal projects, and the only improvement (aside from the obvious "more VRAM") I feel pressed to make is a portable AC unit / some kind of a focused cooling solution. The rig raises the ambient temperature in the office by 4C at least.

Now with the murmurs of even the large players reconsidering their AI spend, and usage-based pricing shifts, having a self-contained, owned, and independently administered compute resource is looking better and better.

btbuildem··on Agentic Trading with Safe Guardrails
I have one very simple rule when it comes to anything "stockmarket" or "trading"

If it worked, you would not have published a paper or a OSS project -- you would have leveraged it to do actual trading.

Anything in these domains that you find on the internet for free, does not work.

btbuildem··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
There's a fortune to be made for whomever produces a car that has minimal features, and and electric-drivetrain with onboard gasoline generator. No screens, knobs and buttons, no assists. Extra fortune if you can licence designs and revive some of the old-and-loved classics with new safety features.
btbuildem··on USDA Projects Smallest US Wheat Harvest Since 1972 Due to Plains Drought
> growers expanded plantings of soybeans, which require less fertilizer than grains like corn and wheat

It's not the drought per se, it's input costs. Farmers are favouring crops that need less nitrogen and potassium.

Commodities have responded accordingly.

btbuildem··on An AI coding agent, used to write code, needs to reduce your maintenance costs
I agree - AI makes it easier to wrangle legacy code. I think the author's point is that if you lose access to the AI tools, everything becomes more daunting -- because you've been comfortably moving mountains with heavy equipment, and now it's back to hand tools.
btbuildem··on Three Inverse Laws of AI
> Humans must remain fully responsible and accountable for consequences arising from the use of AI systems

But, but... but this is the key selling points for all the corpo ghouls and sv lunatics! Abdication of responsibility in pursuit of profit is the holy grail here.
