bsnnkv··on N8n raises $180M
> but shouldn't dilute the FOSS label

This is such a strange thing to post in response to a link which states:

> Although n8n's source code is available under the Sustainable Use License, according to the Open Source Initiative (OSI), open source licenses can't include limitations on use, so we do not call ourselves open source.

bsnnkv··on N8n raises $180M
This comment got me digging, n8n actually has a pretty good post-open source license[1] - I'm glad to see more successful examples of this sort of licensing in the wild

bsnnkv··on Niri – A scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor
I've been working on porting komorebi to macOS[1] over the past month and the scrolling layout[2] works pretty well

It (the scrolling layout) is not exactly the same as Niri because the implementation is based on my personal preferences, but it does what it's supposed to on both platforms

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How Did You Come Up with the Idea for Your Most Successful Projects?
My most successful (also most enjoyable, also earned me the most money) project is a tiling window manager I wrote for Windows, which I have now also ported to be cross-platform on macOS

I just built what I needed for myself - there was nothing that fit my needs when I started using Windows

Similarly, now that I'm using macOS again, I want a seamless cross-platform experience, so I made the same project cross-platform

I don't think my brain is wired in such a way that I can come up with project ideas that are divorced from something I personally have a need or desire for

bsnnkv··on Learning Persian with Anki, ChatGPT and YouTube
Keep in mind this was over a decade ago -

What happened for me was that the ICRC was so desperate for Pashto speakers in Afghanistan for this sort of work (they weren't allowed to hire people for the war crimes investigation work from Pakistan or Afghanistan due to neutrality stuff) that for a time they ended up accepting people who had learned Dari (ie. demonstrated the ability to learn) and gave them 3 months in-country to work with a Pashto teacher and learn enough to be able to be functional in their jobs

This was right after the financial crisis, I had just graduated with a liberal arts degree and had no other job prospects, and I had an interest in Afghanistan, so being paid to learn Pashto and possibly having a job afterwards seemed like a very lucky break to me at the time

bsnnkv··on Learning Persian with Anki, ChatGPT and YouTube
Always fun to see two of my worlds collide!

I studied Dari own my own and at college as an elective, and ended up taking a job with the ICRC to investigate ISAF war crimes in Afghanistan right after I graduated

These days Dari is my most comfortable second language (and I have quite a few of them)

I'm not sure if, given I had to start from scratch again, I'd go down this route - the description and screenshots seem very overstimulating for me

The most important parts of my language learning in Dari (and Pashto) - the "aha" moments if you will, were trying to express something, making a fool of myself, making everyone around me laugh, and then being gently corrected in a long-winded way (usually because I couldn't understand a simpler, more direct correction)

In hindsight this feels like a very equitable cultural exchange - I learned something valuable about the language and culture while giving my interlocutors a funny memory to share with their friends and family

bsnnkv··on As a programmer, get your math sorted
If you were trying to say something with this comment, it communicated nothing to me
bsnnkv··on As a programmer, get your math sorted
> Master the mathematical foundations essential for computer science

I get that this is marketing fluff, but I really don't like this sort of gatekeeping - it's what kept me from programming until I was almost 30

These days I'm quite a prolific programmer both on the clock and in my free time, and I wish I could have started earlier now that I know how little math is involved or required to build useful and beautiful things as a programmer

bsnnkv··on Show HN: F2 – Cross-Platform CLI Batch Renaming Tool
Incredible name choice here - it's very rare that I get this feeling associating a new project with its name. I'm filled with feelings that touch on nostalgia, utility, UX design history and computing heritage when I hear the name F2 associated with a batch renaming tool. Great job!
bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?
I do blog, but not really about the software

Besides the channel, there is a Discord community associated with the project which has ~2500 members at the moment, but other than that I sometimes post in the comment sections of various forums whenever I see someone is looking to solve a problem that the software could help with

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?
You are too kind, or maybe I am too harsh on myself, or maybe some combination of the two :)
bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?
I've been selling licenses[1] for less than 5 months, which is how long it took me to get to 50 active licenses

I've had GitHub sponsors enabled for about 2-3 years now I think, and I currently have 40 recurring sponsors

I've been making YouTube videos for about the same time and it took just over a year to get my channel monetized (1k subscribers + watch hours)

[1]: https://lgug2z.com/software/komorebi - there is a live active subscription counter here

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?
Honestly, it was all the algorithm - I started with very shoddy[1] live programming videos, and slowly I got better[2] by listening to feedback from the early users who gave my videos a chance

There is an element of luck involved (i.e. for extremely viral videos), but most of it is iteration - learning how to record and mix audio properly, learning how to make the best of the lighting you have available, learning that if you want to make live coding videos you need to increase your text size to an uncomfortably large size so that viewers have a more pleasant viewing experience, etc.

[2]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1yECfF7Qyg - my latest video

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?
My credentials: I just got my 50th individual commercial use license subscription last night, and including sponsorship for personal use of the software, I have 90 people contributing financially towards the project.

My advice: Make YouTube videos sharing how you use the product and sharing updates about the product in a structured format. Places like HackerNews, Reddit, pretty much any text-based network, are extremely hostile towards people sharing the outcomes of their individual creativity, whereas video-based networks are surprisingly open to it.

bsnnkv··on Show HN: A Tiling Window Manager for Windows, Written in Janet
komorebi dev here - Jwno is awesome and I highly recommend people give it a try (especially people who enjoy writing Lisp!)

The Windows tiling window manager development scene is a very kind, relaxed and collaborative space where we all take inspiration from and support each other

bsnnkv··on Show HN: A Tiling Window Manager for Windows, Written in Janet
Jwno is great, agentkilo is kind, Lisp is magic :)
bsnnkv··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
> Thanks for your reply, but as a Linux user for over 20 years, all I take away from your post is that you haven't really tried, probably because the variety of distros vastly exceeds the two classic options of mac vs windows.

A very big and very incorrect assumption. This reads like you asked the initial question without any actual curiosity behind it.

bsnnkv··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
I've yet to find anything comparable feature-wise on Linux - and they all come with the huge downside of having to roll your own cohesive settings widget ecosystem for basic everyday things like WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. I run Cosmic Epoch on my old Macbook which is better, but again, feature-wise, it's just not comparable for serious work.
bsnnkv··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
I will also die on this hill - NixOS on WSL + Windows + komorebi[1] for tiling window management is peak productivity for me.

bsnnkv··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
> Software doesn’t stay solved. Every solution you write starts to rot the moment it exists. Not now, not later, but eventually. Libraries deprecate. APIs change. Performance regressions creep in. Your once-perfect tool breaks silently because libfoo.so is now libfoo.so.2.

Since I started using Nix flakes to build everything and pin to specific versions this largely stopped being a problem for me. I happily run things I last touched many, many years ago without worrying about stupid stuff like this ^

> Burnout does not just come from overwork. It comes from overresponsibility.

I remain unconvinced by this, and the more years I rack up, the more I recognize the pattern of burnout having a direct relationship to alienation of labor.

bsnnkv··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
Cool story, but this comment really missed the point.
bsnnkv··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
I don't have many big regrets, but one of the few I have is not having enough photographs or videos from my teenage years to share with my partner and future generations.
