What about symmetric vs antisymmetric? My professor even warned us about how the names can be misleading (it is possible to have a relation that is both symmetric and antisymmetric).

I took discrete math last semester and part of the course focused on binary relations and their properties (reflexive, symmetric, transitive...etc). I saw students memorize the mathematical definitions for all properties and yet be unable to actually apply them to a particular relation. I suspect many people ended up ignoring the definitions and coped by developing their own or using intuition. This seems like a sign that math is not being communicated effectively.

"Translating" the math into Python code[1] helped me understand what these definition were saying and identify algorithms for exam time. The downside is that it took a lot of time and may not have been as effective as grinding practice questions.

That's a pretty significant difference.

You left something out of the quote:

>...we're not going to succeed if we got half the team on the bench, especially when it’s the smarter half of the team. (Laughter.)

Sounds like it was a joke. I think you're being a bit oversensitive.

In the UNIX Hater's Handbook, defenders of rm consider accidental deletion a "rite of passage" and remark that "any decent systems administrator should be doing regular backups" (see page 62). The author's response is funny:

“A rite of passage”? In no other industry could a manufacturer take such a cavalier attitude toward a faulty product. “But your honor, the exploding gas tank was just a rite of passage.” “Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we will prove that the damage caused by the failure of the safety catch on our chainsaw was just a rite of passage for its users.” “May it please the court, we will show that getting bilked of their life savings by Mr. Keating was just a rite of passage for those retirees.” Right.

I'm surprised how relevant parts of this book are 22 years later.

I've found myself using Notepad++ for personal notes/to-do lists and Sublime or Pycharm for coding. I could do everything in Sublime, but this division of duties seems to reduce clutter.
