brummm··on Is the Schrödinger Equation True?
Yeah, that was just an example.

And to be fair, with regards to the standard model, we know the standard model is not fully correct and we still don't have anything better.

brummm··on Is the Schrödinger Equation True?
The article touches upon something that I think most people that learn about physics don't realize. The models physicists use to describe nature do NOT exist in reality. They are mere concepts that work well to describe natural phenomena.

My favourite example for this is the electron. Does an electron how we describe it in quantum mechanics exist in nature? The answer is no. The electron is a model construct we have made up that describes natural phenomena. Nothing more.

This is where non-experts that didn't study physics get confused when they read that an electron is a wave but also a particle. All of these concepts are just physical models that again do not exist in nature. But they describe different aspects of nature pretty well. And so we assign them a meaning beyond what the mathematical or physical model contains, a part of reality.

brummm··on Europe: close to power grid blackout (49,74Hz power line frequency)
From this link [1] it looks like it's back to normal.

brummm··on What I’ve Learned in 45 Years in the Software Industry
Just for fun, I checked for the German football league. I think more than 3/4 were professional football players before becoming coaches.
brummm··on U.S. Bill H.R.69 introduced – To make daylight savings time permanent
I disagree with this. The summer time is much, much better for my mental health. I am stuck working all day and the time of day when I want to and can enjoy daylight is after 5pm. Hence, the summer hours are much better.
brummm··on MindGeek: The owner of Pornhub and RedTube
I know a few people that work there. It's a normal tech company, like many others. There is nothing secretive about it.

It's just generally a surprise when the Republicans actually do their job.
brummm··on Why did Europe become less religious over time and the US didn't?
The US is orders of magnitude more homogeneous than Europe, though.
brummm··on What language do people speak in the Balkans, anyway? (2019)
Same as German. I wonder if actually English is just the exception and most other languages have this "rule"/trait.
brummm··on No More Google
Yeah, it's kind of silly really. Google scholar feeds off the arxiv.
brummm··on Mall real estate company collected 5M images of shoppers
I have talked to somebody working for this exact company before that was telling me about some of their project that they were working on. In addition to video images they also track people through their phones across stores to analyze shopping behaviour and fingerprint customers.

Didn't apple just demo the same thing in their event this week? Might not have to use the google app at all.

brummm··on Ride through Wuppertal on ‘the flying train’ in clear footage from 1902
Calling it a Village is not really correct. Wuppertal had 100's of thousands of inhabitants at that point.
brummm··on A Twist on Schrödinger's Cat Paradox
This is misleading at best. A measurement has nothing to do with a conscious observer taking the measurement. An automated experiment that could note down the result of an experiment would note down the result without any conscious observer having to check in and the result would be the exact same.
brummm··on A Twist on Schrödinger's Cat Paradox
It's a huge issue that observer is interpreted to be something like a person. An observation is a certain kind of interaction that causes the quantum state to collapse. It has nothing to do with consciousness.
brummm··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
These things sound good in isolation, but everybody else is on a different schedule from you, so it is isolating after a while.
brummm··on Entropy explained, with sheep (2016)
Yeah, it showed in the way he explained things.
brummm··on Entropy explained, with sheep (2016)
As a physicist, this is such a great explanation that's actually correct for a change. Entropy must be one of the if not the most misunderstood physical concept out there (along with Planck metrics like Planck energy or Planck length). Entropy is commonly used and written about by so many people that clearly lack the understanding of it that this blog post is a refreshing change.
brummm··on Apple removes Fortnite from App Store after Epic attempts to bypass fees
Apple pay uses the Visa and Mastercard network though. It's on top of the V/MC cut. Apple only adds that you can use your card on the phone. You end up using your credit card anyways.
brummm··on The tragic physics of the deadly explosion in Beirut
I am curious about 2 and 3. Since sounds is also just a pressure wave, those two should have been the same speed as well. I guess the sounds must have travelled through the ground as well.

brummm··on Unlearn rotation matrices as rotations
R_x, R_y and R_z are the basis to generate all rotations. Think of them as the equivalent of the basis vectors in 3d euclidian space: e_x = (1, 0, 0), e_y=(0, 1, 0) and e_z = (0, 0, 1)
