brorfred··on Emissions of banned, ozone-depleting chemical CFC-11 have climbed 25% since 2012
CFCs effectively function as a catalyzer and aren't consumed by the process, hence the hole is more of a Ozone sink. Wikipedia explains the effect of large-scale transport in the stratosphere well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_layer

Here is a good stackexchange answer about the lab experiments that led to our understanding of ozone depletions: https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/49777/the-chlo.... Here is a text from Berkley: https://undsci.berkeley.edu/lessons/pdfs/ozone_depletion_com.... There is a myriad of observations that support the lab experiments and models.

As others have said earlier in the thread – CFC's doesn't pool at the poles. The processes that creates ozone holes require certain conditions (extreme cold and darkness) that only occur by the poles. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion)
brorfred··on Ask HN: Why is Python so popular for ML/DS?
Wouldn't the default assumption be that you can use either a scalar or vector?
brorfred··on Homebrew 1.4.0
I use both homebrew and macports. The main benefit with macports for me is the ability to work with different versions at the same time. You can have applications requiring gcc4.5, gcc4.9, and gcc6 installed. The package manager handles most weird special cases and combinations.

Have you ever met the Swedish police? Does the term "baseball gang" say anything?
brorfred··on Canadian Cops Want a Law That Forces People to Hand Over Encryption Passwords
I do the same – write down a long password where upper and lower case letters a mixed liberally. Type it a many many times but don't memorize it. Now you have the password as muscle memory but have no way to tell anyone what it is. Make sure to save the password in a password manager!

brorfred··on Google 'mic drop' Gmail joke for April Fools' day backfires
It's worse than that- Google+ broke the basic syntax in google search. Adding + before a word used to make it mandatory. They change it to quotations marks so they could have +username instead of @username for google plus. That still bothers me and Google search doesn't work as well.

brorfred··on Tesla Powerwall: not much cheaper and also a bit wimpier than existing batteries
Seems like the original article is way more positive than the click-baity title by The Register:

"So to get 1 kWh of usable storage in a lead acid battery you are looking at spending closer to $800. This makes the Tesla more like 2/3 the price per ‘usable kWh’ compared to good quality sealed lead acid batteries. Not bad. But wait, there’s more…

2) Battery Life The Tesla battery comes with a 10 year warranty and an optional 10 year extension. This is huge. Most lead acid batteries come with a 1 year warranty. Let’s assume the battery gods smile upon you and your lead-acid battery lasts as long as it’s specification (1,200 cycles). You have only got 3-4 years out of it until you need a new one.

If your Tesla battery is going to last 3 times longer, then its practical cost over 10 years is actually less than a quarter of a comparable lead acid battery. Now we’re talking!"

brorfred··on Doctor Fortran in “The Future of Fortran”
This is my experience. It is so much easier to get a Post Doc up to speed in Fortran, than pretty much any other language. The best case scenario is that professional programmers write the frameworks and infrastructure, and that non-programers produce subroutines and other functional parts of the code. The worst case scenario is when the entire code base is produced by non-programmers...
brorfred··on Doctor Fortran in “The Future of Fortran”
The intel compiler is considered to generate runtimes that runs about twice as fast as runtimes from gfortran. Haven't seen any recent tests of CLANG/LLVM yet. The statement that compilers, not languages, are optimized generally holds true for Fortran.

I'm going in the other direction. Used to always wait one or two versions before upgrading and always doing a clean install. I installed bot Mavericks and Yosemite over the older versions early on without any problems.

brorfred··on Mac Pro Build-to-Order Upgrade Pricing Revealed
Computer purchasing in Academia is strictly controlled by procurement rules and other types of regulations. One magic number is $5000- universities normally doesn't charge overhead for capital investments above this, but the full purchase has to be done at the same time. This means that I'm not allowed to buy RAM separately from the computer.
