That is a good stat. I also wonder what the median is (although there probably aren't THAT many vintage/classic cars skewing the average).
brookside··on Philosophy of Psychiatry (2015)
I don't buy this view that pharma companies are the bad greedy ones, and psychiatrist are noble wise doctors participating in clean science.

Pych doctors more than willing participants in the prescribing of stimulants and mild euphoriants. They get rich also doing so - 4/5 $200 appointments an hour is common, and if you look at the highest paid public employees in some states you'll see state-hired prison and other psychiatrists towards the top below university basketball coaches.

> It was as if banks like Goldman were wrapping ribbons around watermelons, tossing them out 50-story windows and opening the phones for bids.

That is a Taibbi metaphor if there ever was a Taibbi metaphor.

On board with your comment until

> a real medical professional, nutritionist, fitness trainer, etc

Family practitioners also commonly prescribe antidepressants and the like. I'd say there is still wild debate about what is a healthy diet. Until recently (and maybe even still) most nutritionists would prescribe something aligning with the Nixon-administration-guided carbohydrate pyramid. Anything a fitness trainer guides you to do is likely less effective than the basics (squats, deadlifts, running).

There is substantial B.S. in all of the professions you mention. The least one can do is find the person dishing it in the right realm.

If a person has schizophrenia, it still massively behooves them or their family to seek the aid of a psychiatrist. A hot mess of conflicting theory and pseudoscience, yes, but it's all we have.

brookside··on How I didn't become a SoundClouder
I 50% agree with this, and 50% can't help notice (in the US) restaurants are full, it is common to have a recent iPhone, and 85% of vehicles on the roads are newish SUVs.

Many people are scraping by on minimal income and have minimal expenses.

Many others are scraping by because their spending is out of whack with income.

Of course, reining in spending doesn't address the societal stagnant income problem. It only helps an individual not find themselves in a desperate situation because of job loss.

brookside··on Mental health is still an issue in the workplace
IMHO defining yourself as "having" or even "being" some mental health label can be reinforcing and self defeating.

And if I had a friend who defined themselves as crazy that would honestly strike me as obnoxious. (I'd give a pass for schizophrenia or the like. Then your brain truly would be broken).

I say this having struggled in my own way (as, many, many - probably the majority - of people do at some point) with forms of anxiety and depression.

Everybody is trying to focus. Everybody is trying to be happy and stable. Everybody is trying to get by.

brookside··on Ask HN: Teaching Code to Someone That Asked Me for a Job
Completely agree. I think the mistake with this arrangement is OP assuming friend is exactly like him - enthusiastic about coding. As the whole idea was OP's I'd severely doubt this is the case. This deal is 99% assured to end with disappointment and possible bad blood.

I have tried to examine what role gender plays in my visceral dislike for Marissa Mayer. I hope it is a small one. I give myself some consolation that I recoil almost equally when reading any news coverage of Travis Kalanick.

brookside··on Ask HN: People who completed a bootcamp 3+ years ago: what are you doing now?
I attended a bootcamp Winter 2013-2014, after making a last minute decision not to attend grad school for something unrelated.

My choice was almost entirely pragmatic, and was heavily influenced by the book So Good They Can't Ignore You[0] by Deep Work author and Georgetown CS professor Cal Newport.

As for the bootcamp experience - I have trouble focusing for long classes, and would have benefited from a couple or more months of pre-study. (Classmates who did the best during the course had the most prior knowledge.)

However, the camp was a great launching point. I did work my ass off, staying up all night to work on individual and group projects in the lobby of the Ace hotel. If anything, the bootcamp helped solidify my own internal identify shift.

3.5 years later, I'm happy with my choice. I'm currently working remote for a startup and teaching evening intro to coding classes (yeah, at a bootcamp, so take my account with however many grains of salt). I really like teaching, and enjoy the intellectual challenge, salary and freedom provided by my day job.

Most of my classmates who I am in touch with are working as developers and seem to be doing alright also.

brookside··on Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922)
These types of arguments on whether something is or isn't Christian or so prevalent on my FB feed, especially in regards to current politics, even being posted by non-Christians trying to convince their Christian relatives and friends to renounce a policy or politician.

My take would be - this is arguing within a nonsensical framework, and we are prolonging the hopefully last stages of the superstitious demon-haunted world era of humanity.

brookside··on Feds probing psychiatric hospitals for locking in patients to boost profits
It's a neat categorization to say troubling psychiatric practices are in the past - I don't think it's accurate.

An example apart from how Psychiatry profits from inserting itself into the legal system - we have society-wide acceptance of the chemical imbalance theory of depression - still without evidence. Because this model is a billions-of-dollars money pipeline for drug companies, who take the bad PR on the nose, and ...psychiatrists.

I have written much less than I could, but I find almost everything about psychiatry - it's influences from Freud, etc. to be problematic.

I know there's no chance of swaying anybody personally invested in the field towards this viewpoint. It's like telling a start-up founder they aren't actually changing the world for the better : /

brookside··on Feds probing psychiatric hospitals for locking in patients to boost profits
Maybe somebody could get ahold of Dr. Daniel Amen's data. Amen (almost an actual phrenologist!) also makes another great example of prominent nonsense in the field. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/daniel-ame...
brookside··on Feds probing psychiatric hospitals for locking in patients to boost profits
Firstly, it must be incredibly difficult to work with severely mentally ill populations, so I commend and thank you for taking on that responsibility.

It troubles me, however, to to give a government the capability to detain citizens based on the (forgive the scare quotes) "medical" expertise of a psychiatrist. This has been abused [1] and I find significant issues with the credence given to testimony by psychiatrists in the US court system [2]. The lack of science in ever-shifting diagnosis criteria is saddening, and these diagnoses will mirror the prevailing social and political winds. Within some of our lifetimes, of course, homosexuality was a pathology in the DSM.

I'm not sure of the answer here. We do need a way to keep people who are a threat to themselves and others in a safe place, but psychiatry has been and is such a troubling and far-too non-scientific endeavor, long drawing profit from conclusions far beyond our true capabilities to understand the human mind and behavior. I don't want people in the field with anything other than an attitude utter humility and possibly shame exerting control over others' lives.

I agree that blurting things out is related to ADD-like behavior, and what you have described is very close to my history.

My experience with treatment, however (which for most is amphetamines) is that I become more verbal and unfiltered while on Adderall, to the point I try to only take it when I am working in a solo setting.

brookside··on Ask HN: How can a front-end developer dive into machine learning?
Thanks for the very nice words. I realize, while still learning and progressing, at this stage in my coding life I'm an electrician, not an electrical engineer. Which can be ok - the world needs electricians too.
brookside··on Ask HN: How can a front-end developer dive into machine learning?
Posts like this definitely give me a nice flare-up of imposter syndrome. Had not heard the acronym IPC. So I guess I don't even know basic shit.

As a bootcamp graduate, what do you want me to ... do? I can't go back in time and major in CS. My employer is satisfied with my work and I build things I'm asked to build independently. Should I give up a startup salary, inflated as it may be, and ship myself off to a CS monastery?

brookside··on Ask HN: How can a front-end developer dive into machine learning?
On a general level, did you or your classmates general fund these masters degrees themselves? And what is the career path / expected compensation after completion of program? Asking as a web dev with only a few years experience but making ok startup-world money. I'm curious, being interested in such a route but also a little older and trying to catch up financially after a pre-tech career.
