brohoolio··on Nasa develops modular avionics systems for small missions
GOES-R is my person favorite.
brohoolio··on GM to build, test thousands of self-driving Bolts in 2018
The suppliers are squeezed really heavily by the traditional auto companies. There is very little margin in the business.
brohoolio··on GM to build, test thousands of self-driving Bolts in 2018
While ford had the cash to survive the Great Recession without a bailout, it would have not survived the collapse of the supplier networks when GM and Chrysler went under.
brohoolio··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
Everyone took the bus or walked.
brohoolio··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
What's up with parents driving kids to school? My generation, born in the late 70s, was rarely dropped off or picked up from school.
brohoolio··on Volkswagen overtakes Toyota as the world's biggest carmaker
Something like half the sales are in China. They don't sell a diesel there. Across the rest of the world sales are way down.

They would be way ahead of Toyota if they didn't cheat.

The other thing to remember is that cars are engineered a few years out. It will be a while before they compromise quality to make up for the large fines.

Cheating doesn't mean you win.

brohoolio··on A new generation of Chromebooks, designed to work with millions of apps
Slack has replaced hangouts as the primary chat for my friends and I. Hipchat replaced hangouts at work as the primary chat.
brohoolio··on Tesla footage of braking before crash ahead [video]
Transporting a family takes room. Rear facing car seats don't necessarily fit into smaller cars.
brohoolio··on Uber's Loss Exceeds $800M in Q3 on $1.7B in Net Revenue
You probably haven't used a debit card to purchase gas.
brohoolio··on The Chevy Bolt Is the Ugly Car of the Near Future
You could buy a volt!

:)

brohoolio··on The Chevy Bolt Is the Ugly Car of the Near Future
Honestly I'd probably rent a car if I need to drive far enough that I have to use the super charger network.
brohoolio··on Apple owes $2M for not giving workers meal breaks
If large multinational companies like this are violating employment law I can't even imagine what smaller companies are doing.
brohoolio··on Regional Security Office Ghana Shuts Down Fake US Embassy
I don't know what you expect. That the U.S. is going to police every nook and cranny of every country when there is rampant local corruption.
brohoolio··on My Unhappy Life as a Climate Heretic
"Although it is too soon to tell how the Trump administration will engage the scientific community"

I'm gonna go out here on a limb and say Trump hasn't done a good job so far. He's claimed that vaccines cause autism. Something that's been debunked over and over. Skeptism about vaccines has made things much more difficult for immunocompromised kids. My friend's kid had cancer and the low rates of vaccination in town made things much more dicey for them.

The second is Trump has claimed that China is responsible for making up global warming.

Right now you've got the house committee on science tweeting out brietbart links.

The key will be funding. Will he continue to fund science? Science in many ways is the new manufacturing. Research universities are among the largest employers in the Midwest. It's not all white collar jobs. There are many different types of jobs that work towards creating knowledge.

brohoolio··on Why I Left White Nationalism
I cant tell if this comment is trolling or serious. My gut says its trolling but the comment history of the poster has me confused.
brohoolio··on Biggest Spike in Traffic Deaths in 50 Years? Blame Apps
How many days in a row do I need to see this anecdotal evidence for it to be valid? At this point I'm up to probably a year solid of seeing folks fiddle with their phone instead of watching where they drive on my twelve minute commute.
brohoolio··on Biggest Spike in Traffic Deaths in 50 Years? Blame Apps
It's true.

I see so many people looking down now at their phones while driving. I'm not sure why it's acceptable now, but it's commonplace. I counted at least 10 drivers on my 12 minute commute yesterday. The scariest one was someone coming in the opposite direction who didn't look up in the 5 seconds I was driving past him. It would have been easy for him to drift into a head on collision.

brohoolio··on Trump Picks Top Climate Skeptic to Lead EPA Transition
As an employee as one of the top flight research university I can't help but wonder what is going to happen to research in the states. My employer kicks out tons of research and tons of startups every year. We are the largest employer in the state. I'm wondering what kind of funding cuts we will experience because our research shows that vaccines work and that the globe is warming and our student base is overall pretty liberal. Seems like a perfect target for political extremists who might be appointed. Really it's the perfect institution to support if you want to bring around the next generation to your cause.
brohoolio··on Phone Makers Could Cut Off Drivers. So Why Don’t They?
Today while I was driving I was waiting to make a right turn. I waited for a car to pass and then pulled out and followed the car. While the car was passing me I could see the driver texting. It was a teenager / early 20s. I followed him for 3 miles on my way to my destination. The speed limit is 50 mph. There are trees on either side of the road and the road is pretty narrow. There are hills and curves so visibility is pretty limited.

The teenager was all over the road. At one point he crossed into oncoming traffic while he was going up a hill with limited visibility. It's a marvel he wasn't killed. I vowed never to bike along the road in this community. This kid could have easily killed someone.

I was in a rural community. Lyft /uber aren't a solution. I'm not sure if the phone companies can solve this but man it's super dangerous out there if you aren't in a car.

brohoolio··on Ford moving all production of small cars from U.S. to Mexico
Transit connect is made in turkey and Spain I believe. They tried to get around the chicken tax but ended up losing to customs.
brohoolio··on How Did GM Create Tesla’s Dream Car First?
The Ford Escape sells 600,000 units a year in America. That's one SUV from one manufacturer. That's more than the entire minivan segment.

If GM can leverage one of their platforms for most of the Bolt it can dramatically lower the cost. What they do with the Bolt can bleed back over to the rest of the platform.

brohoolio··on Why are Adults so busy?
Family.

Let me give you one example. Birthdays. My wife has two sisters and both parents are alive. That's 5 events a year. Double that for my family. 10 events a year. That's basically once a month I'm spending a weekend afternoon or evening. That's just birthdays.

Add kids in and suddenly every other weekend is filled with something. That isn't including extended family.

brohoolio··on Chinese Billionaire Linked to Giant Aluminum Stockpile in Mexican Desert
If China is greatly subsidizing the aluminum production then then how will US producers compete?

It's in the US's interests that they don't allow another country to manipulate the market to destroy the US production capacity. Once that capacity is online the foreign country can then raise prices.

It's not easy or cheap to bring production capacity online.

brohoolio··on Christo’s Newest Project: Walking on Water
This looks amazing. I understand the temporary nature but it would be awesome if it was up longer.
brohoolio··on The Most and Least Expensive Cars to Maintain
Model year data is important. If there was one model year, like a bad transmission, it will mess with the data.

I drove 6 ford escorts before buying a newer car. The 93 model year was terrible but I pushed my 1998 and 1997 to over 250,000 miles each with minimal repair costs.

brohoolio··on The Most and Least Expensive Cars to Maintain
Just to clarify that the whole banking system was locked up and there was no capital. In a normal market GM and Chrysler could have done what Ford did.

Ford was in better shape than the others because they had mortgaged everything before the financial system locked up. That means they also started improving everything sooner.

From my perspective in Michigan the auto bailout was a huge success. My friends in the industry report that most of the cruft in the big three was cut or let go and they really shifted the culture. The whole industry is focused on technology. The suppliers survived. Hundreds of thousands of jobs exist because of the injection of liquidity.

brohoolio··on Spaces, a tool for small group sharing
I'd be inclined to think this would be successful if Google used it internally. As a Google Apps admin I spent quite a bit of time arguing with Google product folks about hangouts and Google+ only to find out they didn't use either of the services internally. It's the only way you can explain some of the terrible ideas about either of those products.
brohoolio··on Boaty McBoatface and the False Promise of Democracy
The second place name, Poppy Mia, is named after a 16 month old kid who died after battle with incurable cancer.

Just imagine being the parents and losing to McBoatface. Have it named after the kid with Mcboatface be the nickname.

brohoolio··on The story behind NetHack's first update since 2003
I've ascended without modifying code. I did have to insert a level map from a game in explore mode because there was a bug in the version I was playing. The bug meant that there was a level where there was no up staircase generated.
brohoolio··on Former federal judge to President Obama: Free the man I sentenced to 55 years
"The fee to cover the average cost of incarceration for Federal inmates in Fiscal Year 2011 was $28,893.40."

That is at least $1,500,000 million dollars. Very expensive.
