briffle··on Proposal to Ban Ghost Jobs
In theory, they can be done at the state level. I know its not perefect, but because of a few states jobs laws, I almost always see salary ranges and averages now on job postings.

Especially remote jobs.

briffle··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
Youtube is $14/month. netflix is $17/month. That is VERY expensive, considering that most of Netflix's cost is production. Youtube has almost no production costs. Their users create content.

Maybe if they paid their users more, so they didn't also have to add 'sponsor segments' inside their video's it would make more sense. The bundling music for the same price is the same crap cable and phone companies have been doing for decades, that most people hate. Let me buy just youtube without ads, and keep spotify.

But as it sits right now, $14/month for video's without youtube ads, but still with ads added by the creators themselves (or paid promotion, I guess) is pretty expensive, compared to $17/month for actual movies with no ads at all.

of course, if you redeployed everything from the source code, you could very well still have the same vulnerabilities that caused the problem in the first place..
briffle··on PostgreSQL IDE in VS Code
I like that I can run this remotely with the vscode ssh extension to my remote systems. But compared to dbeaver, I miss some of the features of dbeaver. Like showing an estimate of large each table is, and seeing how many rows in the 'properties tab'. And being able to see the ERD graphics for individual tables (to show foreign keys, etc).

Also like with dbeaver that you can take the results and export them in many different formats. like directly to excel for some of my co-workers who live and die in excel.

briffle··on Air Traffic Control
I would argue its much more affected by the 2-2-1 scheduling they force at most locations, and that most people don't get to choose a location. I'm not going to sign up for a job where my schedule is random like that, and they may send me to New York, or Albuquerque.

[0] In the US air traffic controllers usually work a relatively unique rotating shift schedule, called the 2-2-1. Working the 2-2-1 means rotating between two afternoon shifts, two morning shifts and a midnight shift over the course of a week.

The same thing has been said about many other companies taking on VC Money. Someday, those investors are going to want to see a return on that investment. Its going to take focus and determination to not just ship enshittification as a feature..

briffle··on Onlookers freak out as 25-year-old set loose on Treasury computer system
How is this possible with any auditing/compliance framework in place? Any basic framework that I have been part of, the developers can't have access to production, and we have to show rigorous testing processes are passed before we update production.

have you looked into Oregon State University's Open Source Lab? https://osuosl.org/communities/

They host quite a few open source projects there. And seem to be one of the few that also hosts for ARM and POWERPC projects.

briffle··on Hello, I'm Mr. Null. My Name Makes Me Invisible to Computers (2015)
first real job was at a 2-year rural college.

We had 2 systems, one for students, one for staff. Sometimes people would forget to properly reference the 'other' account when a teacher took a class, or a student taught a community education class, etc. We were in the process of consolidating into a single DB, and didn't want a bunch of duplicates.

We had a person Leslie that kept getting duplicated in the systems. Same address same age, same birthdate. Only difference was different gender, and last 2 digits of social was 21 instead of 12.

So our dba deleted one, and linked them.

Month later, same thing. So our DBA fixed it. Shaking his head at the people up front not following data entry procedures.

Next week, both Leslie's were in our office. They were born on same day, but hospitals in nearby towns. Back then socials were handed out sequentially by region. They had different last names until they married 40 years before.

They were laughing and said this happens more often then most people would think.

briffle··on A major Postgres upgrade with zero downtime
Logical replication is a great tool, and we are using it for our next DB upgrade coming up in the next few months. It just has a few limitations I wish they would address, especially since logical replication is quickly becoming one of the more popular ways to upgrade databases with minimal downtime.

I understand that logical replication handles partial replication, and the data warehouse use case, and I understand WHY many of the choices they made for it are there.

I just wish that there was a flag you could set in a subscription that would enable it to be a complete 1:1 copy of the database, including DDL, sequences, etc, without having to do all the workarounds that are necessary now.

Currently if a dev adds a column to a table on the publisher, and forgets to do it on the subscriber, there is no error, no indication, until it actually tries to replicate data for that table.

Then you have to be monitoring for that error, and go figure out what other new tables, columns, etc, might have been added to the publisher that are missed on the subscriber. Its a huge opportunity for problems.

briffle··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
I have a Garmin Instinct 2 solar. I had g-shock watches before, because I liked how tough they were, and the instinct2 is pretty close. I wear it swimming, running, sleeping, showering, etc. I take it off about once a month when I charge it up. This summer, I went 6 weeks between charges.

The basic tracking of cardio, hiking, snowshoeing, etc, is exactly what I want from a smartwarch (lets me gamify my physical activity, and sleep).

I does have some great ways to map hikes, find out how to get back (direct path, or retrace steps, etc). Its pretty amazing for a low level garmin.

briffle··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Still have no good answer on why its bad for a company that is supposedly under Chineese influence to collect this kind of information on us, and adjust and tweak an 'algorith' for displaying content. But its perfectly fine for a US company to do it? Wouldn't the right solution be to protect the citizens from all threats, foreign and domestic?
briffle··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
we had a huge wildfire in my area in 2021 that burned through a few small towns. In one town, the only houses that survived where the ones that followed the guides out there for creating defensible space. They were also newer homes, which is obviously easier then retro-fitting an existing home, but the town got rebuilt essentially the same as it was, which is kind of sad to see.

briffle··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
> Education? You probably mean repeating exercises in rote? You likely mean memorisation? That’s not education.

Funny enough, in the US, most states changed their methods of teaching (especially math) 10-20 years ago. And facebook is still filled with parents (although probably mostly grandparents) bitching about not understanding "common core math" without trying to understand it, and expressing how they learned via rote memorization and that is what we should use instead.

Most of them are also being rebuilt with the same inherent problems. If they were rebuilding after a fire or tornado with concrete or ICF homes, with metal roofs with ember screens and tornado straps that would be okay.

> Santa is contractually forbidden from altering the socioeconomic status of any individual.

When my kids where young, all 'big' gifts came from mom and dad, and small ones from Santa. I didn't want my kids to talk about how Santa got them an occulus or iPad, when the kid in the next chair in class, in a worse economic condition, got a much smaller gift, and start feeling left out...
