briansteffens··on Why I wrote a book about interpreters
Yeah, plus even when you get down to machine code, those instructions can be implemented as microcode in the CPU. Then you have things like the lisp machines. Or V8 compiling bits of javascript to machine code while it "interprets". What exactly defines a compiler gets pretty fuzzy.

Also "Sometimes he says wrong things, and then I have to explain why those things are wrong.."

Sounds more like she just lectures him rather than having actual conversations.

I'd like VMX passthrough for nested virtualization.
briansteffens··on Who the Hell Is This Joyce (1928)
I agree with a lot of what he's saying, but at the same time, why does it matter? Does every book need to be easily enjoyable as light reading by anyone who is literate? Joyce was highly educated and exceedingly well-read, and he wrote (in his later works especially) for an audience similar to himself on those points. The only downside is it limits his potential audience, similar to how a writer of obscure fanfiction or someone who blogs about niche subjects limits their own potential audience. His particular niche was writing for literature nerds.
briansteffens··on My Most Important Project Was a Bytecode Interpreter
Nice post! I really enjoy playing around with things like this. It's amazing how little is needed to make a language/interpreter capable of doing virtually anything, even if not elegantly or safely. As long as you can perform calculations, jump around, and implement some kind of stack your language can do just about anything.

I recently threw something together sort of like this, just for fun (I like your interpreter's name better though): https://github.com/briansteffens/bemu

It's crazy how much these little projects can clarify your understanding of concepts that seem more complicated or magical than they really are.

briansteffens··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
Yeah I was exaggerating a bit, I find plenty of games to play. If you're not too picky about which game you play, you can find a lot of good games. It's when all your friends are playing something specific and telling you to play it with them but it's Windows only that you feel the pain and are tempted to reboot into Windows :)
briansteffens··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
Or you could just only play Linux games. I mean sure, you'll eventually get tired of Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of Mordor. But when that happens you can just play Shadow of Mordor.

briansteffens··on Yahoo: Patent Sell-Off Isn’t a Fire Sale
Not really on topic, but is it possible to acquire a 'defensive' patent? Maybe by placing a patent into public domain or otherwise promise through some legal means not to pursue legal action against anyone who would like to use the patent?
briansteffens··on More contributions on your profile
Maybe they could bring back streaks but make them only visible to yourself as a purely motivational thing?
briansteffens··on More contributions on your profile
Agreed, mine was the only streak I ever paid attention to and for the last few months it really kept me going, making at least one little contribution per day.
briansteffens··on How work has gotten better
The problem with this line of thinking is that of course at the individual level anybody can do better*, but at the group level it means nothing. Somebody has to work at Walmart, and one person finding a better job doesn't eliminate the need for the worse jobs to be filled. We can't all be entrepreneurs and doctors. It doesn't make a lot of sense to depend on minimum-wage workers to keep society running and at the same time throw them under the bus for doing so.
