brianr··on Sentry 8 is here
Rollbar actually wasn't inspired by Sentry -- it was inspired by our founding team's efforts to solve exception tracking internally at Lolapps.

Several of the new features in Sentry (like release management / deploy tracking) actually look a lot like things that have been in Rollbar for a long while, though I expect that is the result of two smart teams attacking the same problem, rather than one inspiring the other.

brianr··on Sentry 8 is here
Brian from Rollbar here. You actually can do what you describe in Rollbar: set the name of the app as the 'environment' (configured via application code), and then you can just use a single API key. That's not really what it's designed for, but I think it would work rather well.

I'm not sure when you last looked at our APIs, but we do now have methods for creating and managing projects (though not yet notification settings): https://rollbar.com/docs/api/provisioning/

brianr··on Exception Monitoring and Response
Great to see some more brainpower going into this problem. We at Rollbar (https://rollbar.com) have been at this as well for the past 3 years, and I'm still stunned from time to time at how useful exception monitoring is.

For anyone looking to implement something like Haystack, definitely give Rollbar a look -- you'll find most of these capabilities there (and much more). And if any of the Haystack or GitHub devs have had a chance to play around with both, I'd be really interested to hear any feedback; drop me a line (email in profile).

brianr··on LogMeIn has acquired Meldium (YC W13)
Congrats Brad and team!
brianr··on Grocery Delivery Service Instacart (YC S12) Raises $44M
Congrats Instacart!
brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
Yep - the debug toolbars for Pyramid, Flask, etc. do as well, using the same facility as here. The cool thing about this feature is being able to see the local variables from real exceptions in production instead of just in your local dev environment.
brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
That's a nice trick, though it does require knowing ahead of time what data you want (and having lots of __traceback_info__ and __traceback_supplement__ statements in the code). The nice thing about grabbing all locals is that the data is collected without having to think about it.
brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
That's pretty awesome, we'd love to have this in Node as well (which we also use). Will check it out.
brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
Very nice. Did you find globals to be useful often? We excluded those here because there can be a lot of them (i.e. imported modules), but could be a good addition. `obj.field` is a nice touch too (our current approach will work if repr() shows the field, but that requires some code ahead of time).
brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
Ruby: absolutely. It's not quite as straightforward as Python , but it should be feasible using binding_of_caller. If any Ruby people want to help us figure this out, please drop us a line or stop by https://github.com/rollbar/rollbar-gem/issues/117

Excluding sensitive data: yep. This feature uses the same scrub_field list that's used to scrub sensitive data from the request (GET/POST/headers/etc).

brianr··on Getting local variable values in stack traces, in production
We've been using this internally for a few weeks now and it has been really, really awesome. Currently just Python, but should be feasible for Ruby, PHP, and other dynamic langauges too.
brianr··on Dropbox acquires Hackpad (YC W12)
We love Hackpad at Rollbar. Congrats guys, keep up the good work!
brianr··on A Better Way to Track JavaScript Errors
Do you need open source or are you OK running something proprietary? If the latter is an option, Rollbar (https://rollbar.com) can be deployed on-premise.
brianr··on Vizify acquired by Yahoo
Congrats to the Vizify team!
brianr··on Today’s outage for several Google services
Also reminded me of this CloudFlare outage from last year, where a bad configuration rule caused their routers to crash: http://blog.cloudflare.com/todays-outage-post-mortem-82515

In that instance the rule was written by a human, but deployed automatically to their entire infrastructure before they could notice the problem it caused.

brianr··on Why I hate funnels.
This is silly. Funnels are a useful abstraction to measure and optimize conversion rates in a multi-step process. How you optimize the steps in the funnel (i.e. spam or not) is up to you.

The "upside down funnel" is really an example of a viral loop, optimistically shaped to imply that loving your customers is guaranteed to bring you more of them. But that is still worth measuring, and once the referrals get to the "try you out" phase, it's worth understanding the process by which they become loyal customers. That's what funnels are for.
