brianmckenzie··on New clickjacking affects all browsers; cause remains unknown
I've seen quite a few strange behaviors in all the browsers whilst hacking away at CSS.

Not inclined to attempt a duplicate exploit, but it may involve some combination of visibility: hidden; with older tags that breaks the expected behavior. Absolute positioning w/z-index could be involved as well. That might explain why Adobe was upset about it - you can do some pretty weird stuff with z-index and the flash player.

That doesn't nearly cover all the possibilities I can think of, and it's probably not the last CSS exploit we'll see.

brianmckenzie··on Ask YC: What do you think of my new search engine?
You score major points with me just for having a duck in the logo.

Also, my search results were quite relevant. I'd reduce the font size a bit, and maybe lose the styling on the search button.

Good for a first try.

brianmckenzie··on David Foster Wallace. Dead at 46.
Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart, you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. But the insidious thing about these forms of worship is not that they're evil or sinful, it's that they're unconscious. They are default settings.

RIP DFW.

brianmckenzie··on Financial Primer For Self-Funded Startups, Part 1
I liked 'The Ten-Day MBA'. It is a pretty quick read, and covers all this stuff.
brianmckenzie··on Sister of Python Hacker arrested for protest - His essay on protest and change
The founding fathers didn't have anything in common with the average citizen either - if anything, they were relatively more wealthy than politicians today.
brianmckenzie··on Poll: Which programming language do you plan on learning next?
Objective-C here, too. It's kinda cool because I get to re-learn C at the same time.
brianmckenzie··on Ask YC: What's on your "Holy Shit" list?
Mosaic. Since the first day I saw it, I haven't gone as much as a week without writing a computer program.
brianmckenzie··on Here’s the Deadliest Catch: Hiring an Agency to Build Your Startup
Also the whole "you must have quick changes to succeed" is overblown. Sure a hacker will probably be able to roll out a new change a week earlier, but how much can you really gain during that 1 week?

In many cases, a hacker will be able to roll out a change three months earlier. Sometimes I turn around a change for a client in as little as an hour, but a big change? Those rarely happen within a timeframe that most entrepreneurs would find acceptable. Especially if you don't have an agency-of-record relationship - those always take priority.

brianmckenzie··on Here’s the Deadliest Catch: Hiring an Agency to Build Your Startup
As an agency programmer, I'll say this: if you're a startup, don't hire an agency unless your website is simply a marketing vehicle for your (non-web-based) product. An agency can give you top-notch graphic design, etc, but are much too slow to service a public-facing web startup. This is due to the project management process, and the fact that agencies have 30 other clients besides you. The article is largely right-on.
brianmckenzie··on Why the lucky stiff: when you don't create things...
I really needed to hear this today. Thanks!
brianmckenzie··on Why "variables" in CSS are harmful
It is rare that an essay makes its point in such an unintended fashion.
brianmckenzie··on Standing versus Sitting
You can get a great standing desk at Ikea for about 100 bucks. I swear by mine.
brianmckenzie··on DHH: Are you sure you want to be in San Francisco?
I loved DHH's speech at startup school, but having lived in Chicago and now living in SF, I have to disagree with him on this one.

His point seems twofold: 1) The availability of funding in the Bay Area tempts people to take it whether they need it or not, and 2) The competition for top talent is stronger here than anywhere else.

The first point, on funding, is news to me. Yes, the availability of VC here is correlated with more Bay Area startups being funded. It doesn't mean that your startup will automatically be funded just because you're located here - the competition for funding is as strong as the competition for talent.

I meet people doing self-funded startups all the time. The differentiator is whether you want to be the next Facebook vs. traditional profit model. Yes, the funded web-2.0-ish startups get most of the press here, it doesn't mean that no one is doing it another way.

Yes, the competition for talent here is fierce. Right now I'm looking for a CSS expert, no programming required, and even that is nearly impossible to find. However, I know I will find someone sooner or later because I'm located in SF. I shudder to think how hard this would be if I were in St. Louis or something, or even a less tech-centric city like Chicago. A few weeks ago I needed an expert Flex hacker to help with something I'm building, so I just called up my friends until I found one. Try doing that in the midwest. Also, I'm at the kind of small, traditional-profit-type company that DHH so admires.

Hackers move here because SF is the best place on earth to be a hacker, and that fact mitigates in your favor when looking for talent.

brianmckenzie··on DHH on the pluses of PHP
How weird - just today I had to program something in PHP for the first time in years. I sometimes like to go back and use languages I haven't touched in a long time - it makes me thankful for what I have now, and the code I write in the old language is always better for the exposure to more powerful languages. Not that I'll be breaking out QuickBasic anytime soon. =)
brianmckenzie··on COBOL ON COGS :-)
I'm writing a framework that writes frameworks.
brianmckenzie··on Send an email to the future with time machiner
Just sent myself a future-mail telling myself to go to the driving range this weekend. I hope it works, because I'm totally gonna forget otherwise.
brianmckenzie··on Communicate Acquires Y Combinator Startup Auctomatic, Unveils New Business Strategy
Way to go!
brianmckenzie··on Ask YC: How many people here were regional BBS users back in the day?
Oh yeah - I was a SYSOP on two BBSes in the St. Louis area, one of which was my own. This was in the early-mid 90's, just before internet became widely available.

I met my high school sweetheart on my BBS. Man, those were the days.

brianmckenzie··on Ask News.YC: Any other hackers out there amateur lockpickers?
I'm into it, a little bit. I'm good enough that I never get locked out of my apartment, but I couldn't crack a safe or anything.

There's a weird and compelling sensation you get when you successfully pick a lock you've never picked before. Especially if there's some practical goal involved.

brianmckenzie··on Startup School 2008
I applied anyway, now keeping my fingers crossed.
brianmckenzie··on Heroku Lifts Ruby on Rails Development into the Cloud (YC Winter 08)

brianmckenzie··on Top 4 Things To Never Do To Your Users
American Airlines and Scottrade both do this. Dumbasses.
brianmckenzie··on Hero Worship in IT - Good or Bad?
Those essays (especially the ones written after Viaweb and before YC) can be inspiring if you're stuck in a cube at Big Company, Inc. and neither your managers nor your fellow programmers are interested in doing anything else with their lives.

My thoughts exactly. I first encountered PG's essays at a time when I really needed his brand of encouragement. They persuaded me that I wasn't 100% crazy to think I could start a company. Still haven't switched to Lisp though. =)

brianmckenzie··on Success [pic]
I believe you can buy a printed copy of this pic at Top Dog in Berkeley. For whatever reason.
brianmckenzie··on Ask YC: favorite books
LOTR

Kafka on the Shore (Haruki Murakami)

Blood Meridian (Cormac McCarthy)

Devil in the White City (Erik Larson)

brianmckenzie··on Doctorow: How Your Creepy Ex-Co-Workers Will Kill Facebook
I think Doctorow overstates the awkwardness of ignoring a friend request. People do it all the time, I know I do, and I've never accepted a 'top friends' request.

There's a hidden benefit if people use the 'ignore' feature properly: you get a better idea of who your friends are. Someone ignoring a friend request can be very telling.

brianmckenzie··on The serverless Internet company
Stay away from MT - the grid is slow even for simple apps, and they go down on a regular basis. Have also had bad experience with Dreamhost.

I recently signed up w/Joyent and am happy with it so far, have also heard good things about SoftLayer, ServerBeach, RackSpace, Layered Tech...some of the other names you hear thrown around on here.

EC2 is probably a better option once you've been around for awhile and that economy of scale starts working in your favor.

brianmckenzie··on Real Geek Heart Beats in Xkcd's Stick Figures
As silly as it sounds, I don't remember his name. He was a friend-of-a-friend, I think he only mentioned it to me because I had NASA patches all over my backpack. If you're really interested I can ask around.
brianmckenzie··on What's the holdup on your startup?
The departure of two co-founders has made it take several months longer than I expected. All the same, I should be launching in the next week or so.
brianmckenzie··on Real Geek Heart Beats in Xkcd's Stick Figures
If you go to a school whose physics department is helping NASA with something, and you have a job there, you can work on NASA robots. I knew a guy who worked on the Mars rover when he was 19 or 20.

He was super-smart, but that probably goes without saying.
