brianjking··on Ask HN: Why does PayPal protect scammers?
Not to mention that they literally include this language on the screen when you issue a payment via F&F. "If you're scammed you won't be able to get your money back."

brianjking··on Ask HN: SWEs who switched to AI/ML, how is it going?
this.
brianjking··on Ask HN: SWEs who switched to AI/ML, how is it going?
How is AI/ML not involving SWE?
brianjking··on Stable Code 3B: Coding on the Edge
All of the Mistral versions have been excellent, including the OpenHermes versions. I encourage you to check out Phi-2 as well, it's the only 3b model I've found really quite interesting outside of Replit's code model built into Replit Core.
brianjking··on Stable Code 3B: Coding on the Edge
A 3B tiny model is not going to compare to GitHub copilot. However, there are plenty of nice 7B models that are excellent at code and I encourage you to try them out.
brianjking··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
If this somehow incorporated the RIM Trackball as well somehow I'd already have ordered it. I have some real life nostalgia for Blackberry keyboards.
brianjking··on Show HN: Chat with data/plots/graphs in images
You can't sign in using Google.
brianjking··on Americans are canceling more of their streaming services
Netflix has Six Feet Under now :)
brianjking··on Stirling-PDF: local web application to perform various operations on PDFs
I'm fairly confident GPT-4V will do this just fine, tbh.

You just need to extract each of the elements into a structured JSON or something, right?

I'll try with your example later today.

brianjking··on Stirling-PDF: local web application to perform various operations on PDFs
I second this, that or have you tried GPT-4 Vision or Donut?
brianjking··on Midjourney v6 is finally here
Nice, it looks great too. I just cannot wait for an API.
brianjking··on Google Imagen 2
They've been emailing me saying I have access for quite some time as part of the Trusted Tester program., yet, I still do not. I can caption images but nothing else. So disappointed.
brianjking··on Why is Bluetooth sound quality bad on my Mac
Yeah, Windows is a million times worse and more confusing in this regard. My favorite is even if you're using an external USB mic which allows you to use the "Stereo" profile on the headphones, until Windows somehow hijacks the audio with a Teams or Outlook notification and mutes all of the audio that actually matters until you clear the notification.
brianjking··on A connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
Wait, how do you use this?
brianjking··on To revive Portland, officials seek to ban public drug use
What if we...i don't know, actually helped people!?

Nothing, absolutely nothing, will change until this country starts actually helping people.

* Quality drug treatment that is paid for by the state/federal level.

* Job training/retraining that is paid for at the state/federal level.

* Affordable, high quality education that helps people not get interested in, have time for, be so full of despair that they resort to these hard drugs.

* Quality, affordable, accessible mental health services IN ADVANCE of a crisis.

Locking people up or making drugs illegal will change nothing but cause there to be more pain.

brianjking··on SomaFM
man, I haven't thought of SomaFM in so long. I used to listen to so much Groove Salad
brianjking··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
$150 for a Leap v2 is an incredible deal. Great chair, I used mine for many years.
brianjking··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2023
Ooh, nice, which did you purchase?
brianjking··on StableLM Zephyr 3B
Yeah, Replit is likely the best option out there for a 3B model size, right?
brianjking··on Ask HN: Choice of Chair?
Without knowing what you don't like about the Aeron, how large/small you are and how you sit, etc this is incredibly difficult.

I really like the Steelcase Leap v2 and recently switched to a Herman Miller Embody. The embody is a neat chair, but I kind of wish I went for something else.

I also use a standing desk and a topo mat.

brianjking··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
The thing that leaves me confused is what will happen to the main Beeper app?
brianjking··on Odd Tweet from the Official OpenAI ChatGPT Account
https://twitter.com/ChatGPTapp/status/1731073315727441922

Why does it say Confidential in the corner? There's no announcement in the OpenAI discord either.

Seems strange, but we shall see.

brianjking··on Llamafile lets you distribute and run LLMs with a single file
This can truly revolutionalize education and access, feels like what I hoped the One Laptop Per Child project would do, this could actually achieve. We just need someone with a heap of funds to package this up into a very inexpensive machine and distribute them.
brianjking··on Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board
Where are you planning on moving to? I don't think there's a reason to not use OpenAI, but definitely right to diversify and use something like LiteLLM to easily switch between models and model providers.
brianjking··on Meditron: A suite of open-source medical Large Language Models
In fairness, many doctors have terrible advice and make mistakes often. This is why malpractice insurance exists.
brianjking··on Meditron: A suite of open-source medical Large Language Models
This is debated until the end of time. Open weights, whatever you want to call it. Essentially people and companies can use LLama 2 commercially as long as you have less than 700m MAUs if I recall correctly.
brianjking··on Ask HN: Cheapest way to run local LLMs?
What is a decent tok/s?

Your best bet is to run a quantized 7b model using LMStudio or Ollamma on your M1 Mac, like neural chat v3.1 from Mistral/Intel.

brianjking··on Ask HN: What is Q* (Q star) at OpenAI and how does it threaten humanity
correct, this is my understanding.
brianjking··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
They don't have that valuation now. Secondly, yes, MSFT is on record of this. Third, Benioff (Salesforce) has said he'll match any salary and to submit resumes directly to his ceo@salesforce.com email as well as other labs like Cohere trying to poach leading minds too.
