brezelnbitte··on CEO Feels Terrible About Laying Off 900 Employees over Video Chat
There’s a much better way to do this and while it’s time-consuming it’s the right thing to do. You have their immediate manager reach out individually with an HR Business Partner on the call to help manage the conversation and answer immediate questions about severance, immigration etc. May need to some group calls where whole teams are let go but as personal as possible is the goal. I’ve seen it done this way where there more than 1000 so it’s doable with large RIFs. By doing it this way you also maintain a chance they’ll come back when you’re doing better and that you won’t risk expensive wrongful termination claims.
brezelnbitte··on I read a book that blew my mind a little
I must be inoculated against this wanting disease because if everyone wants something, I have a visceral desire to avoid it. This is especially true with travel where I avoid all popular sites or destinations. I also don’t celebrate holidays, listen to obscure music, live in an atypical city for tech workers, invited no one to my wedding except a witness, studied German instead of business or comp sci and list goes on. However, maybe it’s an inverse of wanting. Maybe I want those popular things but don’t choose them bc others have.
brezelnbitte··on Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles
Excellent article and visualization explaining how EVs have less lifetime impact than ICEs.

brezelnbitte··on Pronouncing non-English names for English speakers
I have a German last name that not even my family pronounces “correctly” and myself didn’t learn the “correct” pronunciation until I studied German at university. Most other Americans butcher it, Germans get the German pronunciation right but never the way I grew up hearing it.

My opinion is just call me what you want as long as I know to respond to it.

brezelnbitte··on Good Riddance, TurboTax. Americans Need a Real ‘Free File’ Program
The reason your taxes are simpler though is because the Dutch government doesn’t use the tax system to implement policy like the US does. The US Congress uses the tax system to influence social policy as well as to deliver benefits for specific groups and industries. And over time all of these legislative additions have turned a simple revenue raising system into a complex mess of deductions and credits.

Now I am not defending turbo tax’s predatory actions in the past but it’s not complicating the tax system just taking advantage of it being complicated.
