brettkromkamp··on What is the end game of AI?
What AI is going after, that is, the size of the pie, is the $50 trillion per year portion of global GDP that makes up wages. Putting aside the risks (which are enormous) when you see it that way you begin to understand OpenAI's valuation late last year, and that that's just the tip of the iceberg of what's coming.

The risk of disrupting a sizable chunk of the world's wages is fuel for a separate post and conversation. IMHO it's the real risk of AI, and the Skynet scenario around ASI/AGI that has been popularized is a distraction.

There is no end goal. It's just a bunch of independent actors who are all trying to get ahead of their competitors a step at a time. Two steps if they're lucky. The collective system steers into whichever direction was determined by the previous set of steps, with very little potential for any individual actor to turn it around.

brettkromkamp··on Trump Is Poised to Accept a Luxury 747 from Qatar for Use as Air Force One
Just another example of US decline, right?
brettkromkamp··on White House plagued by Signal controversy as Pentagon in "full-blown meltdown"
This administration is a true gift to America's adversaries.
brettkromkamp··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 5, 2025
A very depressing read, indeed. One can only hope that Europe can, at least, somewhat compensate. I also find it hard to believe (although, obviously possible) that the majority of Americans wanted this regardless of Trump winning the elections. At this point you have to ask yourself what a Russian asset could have done more in relation to what Trump has done.

brettkromkamp··on AI That Writes LinkedIn Posts in Seconds
I'm just waiting for someone to post that they have developed an AI to read and summarize (AI-generated) LinkedIn posts making us go full circle: AI-in -> AI-out -> AI-in... ad infinitum.

brettkromkamp··on Trump asks Supreme Court to let him rescue TikTok from US ban
Which leads me to ask the question how the prevention of the TikTok ban would benefit Trump personally.
brettkromkamp··on Ukraine says it killed senior Russian general who died in scooter blast
I agree. While not wanting to trivialize this operation by the Ukrainians, I don't think it can truly be compared to Israel's elaborate plan to sabotage Hezbollah's communication devices in terms of their respective complexity.
brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: How do you use AI/LLMs to accelerate your own learning?
Not so much an out-of-the-box tool, but I am using OpenAI's API to generate complete knowledge graphs for my own tool: Contextualise (a topic maps-based PKM tool). Although not perfect, this approach is working suprisingly well.
brettkromkamp··on The Complete LangGraph Blueprint – Build 50 AI Agents for Business Success
LangGraph is an interesting agentic AI framework, so I will definitely take a look at your book. How well does it read on a Kindle?
brettkromkamp··on The Tao of Topic Maps (2000)
To this day, topic maps still provide me with my go-to (meta) model.

Topic maps truly provide a straightforward organizational metaphor. The foundational topic maps concept —comprising topics, occurrences, and associations— achieves a balance between simplicity and clarity while offering sufficient structure. This allows you to effectively translate your mental model of a domain into a corresponding topic map representation.

I remember that the same thing happened with US military personnel, years ago. That this is still a thing in 2024 with the Secret Service, if this report is true, seems beyond amateurish.
brettkromkamp··on Show HN: What I Learned from Making the Python Back End for My New Webapp
Excellent write up. Especially the part about SQLite PRAGMAs is very helpful (my web application is also SQLite-based). Thanks for sharing your experience.
brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: What's your preferred stack for personal projects?
Flask (Python), FastAPI and htmx. A very capable stack while still be manageable by a solo-developer.
brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: What open-source, non-funded project are you working on?
Contextualise. Contextualise is an effective tool particularly suited for organising information-heavy projects and activities consisting of unstructured and widely diverse data and information resources.

How benevolent of him.
brettkromkamp··on [dead]
Waste of time.
brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: How many of you write a personal blog?
I do, here: https://brettkromkamp.com/. Unfortunately, I don't post regularly.
brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: What's your current side project?
Implementing version 2.0 of https://contextualise.dev/ a knowledge management tool. At the moment, adding (vector) embeddings for semantic search and automatically surfacing related topics. Once that is done, adding a multi-modal embeddings model so that uploaded images can be (semi) automatically described and tagged.

Great to see this kind of innovation in the Flutter ecosystem. Bookmarked!
brettkromkamp··on Google layoffs hit Flutter team
It doesn’t seem to me that Flutter was singled-out. Google is going through a phase of company-wide cuts (for example, a lot of people in their Python team have just been made redundant, as well). It also looks like there is a substantial amount of development (still) taking place in and around Flutter… think Impeller and WASM-support (to name but a few). On the whole, Flutter’s ecosystem seems to be, at least, reasonably healthy. All of this does not mean that Google won’t kill Flutter at some point. I just don’t think it will be now.

brettkromkamp··on Ask HN: What software sparks joy when using?
Blender (https://www.blender.org/), by a wide margin, is my favourite piece of software. It's so apparent that the team behind it is passionate regarding what they are doing and highly skilled, as well. Each release brings both large and small improvements. What's more... it's open source.
