bregma··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
That wasn't a Therac-25 by any chance?
bregma··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
There's still plenty of web sites that check the OS and if it's not Mac OS, Windows, or Andoid it's no service for you. Faking your UA is not always about privacy, it's about defeating stupidity.
bregma··on Live: Artemis II Launch Day Updates
You could just re-use the studio where they faked the Apollo 11 landing except it was in 7 WTC which was destroyed in a controlled demolition to hide the evidence.
bregma··on One of the largest salt mines in the world exists under Lake Erie
Sure. The largest is under Lake Huron. One of the largest is under Lake Erie. And they're both in the same massive salt formation. The same massive formation is also deep under Chicago, but too deep to mine practically. When I say massive, I am being conservative.
bregma··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Mark Carney's famous speech at Davos was a breath of fresh air compared with anything ever spewed by the deranged current president of the USA. I am so glad I live in the best country in the world with him as prime minister and that we have no propaganda here in Canada. We will do so much better when we enter trade agreement negotiations with that degenerate loser south of the border in the next few months. That guy can't even ties his own shoes because of his cankles, but Mark Carney can tie not only his own shoes but he always wears sensible socks too.

You may have missed propaganda because you missed the propaganda.

bregma··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
It started with Richard Nixon and his cynical manoevering.

It was reinforced with Ronald Reagan. Remember how he spun the Iranian revolution and the bad economy on his opposition? Remember how he rode the Moral Majority wave?

It was taken up a notch by G. W. Bush and his band of trigger-happy self-serving country club elitists.

No one in between those points tried to roll back the progress. They're just as guilty. It's been a monotonic increasing function towards the current apex (nadir?).

Fear what comes next. If there is a next.

bregma··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Malicious incompetence. The inbred kissing cousin of malicious compliance.
bregma··on Artemis II is not safe to fly
"Houston, this is Golden One. I'm looking down on the big, beautiful, blue world. They love me down there. They all love me. I'm the greatest astronaut ever in the history of mankind. No one has ever orbited like this before."

Yeah, you may be right.

bregma··on The bee that everyone wants to save
There's not as much crossover as you might think. In North America the native pollinators are adapted to the native plants and can't even pollinate the introduced eurasian ones. And it goes the other way: honeybees can't pollinate the native plants, only the introduced eurasian ones.

If course, if you're in Europe, honeybees are the native pollinators. At least around the Mediterranean.

bregma··on The bee that everyone wants to save
Honeybees are livestock. They're no more endangered than chickens or cows. If we need more, we just breed more.

In most places honeybees are raised they couldn't even survive in the wild. Just like cows and chickens and pigs. As with most livestock, without human intervention they would probably be wiped out.

But... that's exactly what Big Academia doesn't want you to know.

It's far far easier to tear down than to build.
bregma··on What happened to GEM?
The problem was you also needed to buy a Mac to get the licensed ROMs.
bregma··on What happened to GEM?
I got all the GEM docs through Archie at umich.edu. You could get everything there including the entire GNU toolchain and MiNT so you could have a real development environment.

Between DM sessions, of course. Or Time Bandits.

> but surely someone wanted hot tea faster

No one in the USA drinks hat tea. The choices (and it tends to be regionally-based) is sweet or unsweet tea. No need to boil a kettle quickly for that.

bregma··on Is it a pint?
I don't want my beer to taste like gasoline though.
bregma··on Is it a pint?
How do you measure the head through the red solo bubba cup?

Really, no self-respecting Canadian would drink beer out of anything except directly out of the bottle, can, or keg.

bregma··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia
Why bother with the facts when you're already heard all the gossip?
bregma··on Having Kids (2019)
Our first was colicky for the first 18 months or so. A nightmare, really, just like you described. Back arched, face red, for hours every day, no comforting.

We went on to have more kids. They were all quiet and easy. We sometimes wondered if there was something wrong with them.

bregma··on How the Turner twins are mythbusting modern technical apparel
You're just confused by terminology. While 1 C is 273 K, 1 degree Celsius is 1 degree Kelvin.

See, a degree is not an absolute unit of measure like a Celsius or a Kelvin, it's a relative difference between two absolute units of measure. When discussing the difference between two separate temperature readings measured in Celsius, degrees Celsius is entirely appropriate.

Think of it like time: there is a difference between meeting at 2:00 and meeting two hours from now.

bregma··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
Following the precedents of imprisoning and persecuting the previous regime on "corruption" charges established by the likes of much of Latin America, Pakistan, the Phillipines, and other similar countries will definitely mark the USA as a second-rate tin-pot dictatorship.

Maybe the predecessor regime is corrupt. Maybe not. But the first thing the new regime always does is to arrange the show trials to establish their own bona fides.

bregma··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
There is no evidence that dozy Donny the paedo president has dementia. It's just that one of his personality traits is "Arbitrary".

I can just imagine him saying, as he walks into the TV room in the Whitehouse, "I went to Glitterhoof's chamber and gave him a good tumble! It is good to be the king!"

"Digital" means you represent information using digits. Discrete numbers. "on/off" is binary. "Analog" means not using digits but instead an alternative (analogous) representation of the original data, usually continuous.

The grooves in a vinyl LP directly represent (are analogous to) the variations in sound pressure interpreted by our ears as sound. The grooves are continuously varying in direct proportion to the continuously varying sound waves. That's analog.

Converting analog video signals into a sequence of integral digits (even if it's pulsed-code modulation) is an analog-to-digital conversion, and storing those digits on a medium makes that a digital medium. It may just not be a binary digital medium.

bregma··on Meta Platforms: Lobbying, dark money, and the App Store Accountability Act
The Linux kernel is licensed GPLv2. The GPLv2 license forbids adding addition terms that further restrict the use of the software.

A "Linux distro" is not the Linux kernel. It's possible for some distros to add such license terms to their distribution media, but others like Debian and Debian-based ones adhere to the GPL so no go.

bregma··on 3D-Knitting: The Ultimate Guide
Warping a loom by hand is a nightmare of repetitive tweaking, drawing each warp end through a heddle and adjusting the tension, one by one and back again. It's like restringing and tuning a guitar with hundreds of strings.

Even hand knitting is slightly better -- cast 250 stitches on to a circular needle then start the next row, only to find 10 rows later you've twisted it and are now knitting a Moebius sweater. Rip it out and repeat (sometimes referred to as "frogging" or "tinking").

Yeah, knitting machines are satisfying in many ways.

bregma··on 3D-Knitting: The Ultimate Guide
Looms weave. You need a knitting machine to knit.

> Laser discs are not digital... It is digitized in the time domain

Laser disks are 100% digital (as you said, they store digits in the time domain).

They don't encode their data using binary like a CD does.

"Binary" and "digital" are two separate and unrelated concepts.
