I build internet products and work extensively with generative AI.

Recent public projects include:

- Contextify: https://contextify.sh (A tool to assist CLI-based agentic programming workflows)

– FileKitty: https://github.com/banagale/FileKitty (a prompt engineering utility)

– Chief of Staff: https://chiefofstaffhq.com (a pre-generative AI text-to-speech SaaS)

I also very occasionally write at: https://banagale.com

bredren··on Filing the Corners Off MacBooks
It’s not just the edge but the corners where the finger accommodation is for opening the lid.

There’s a sharp corner there is unnecessary.

bredren··on Claude Managed Agents Overview
Yes. Gemeni's web interface was atrocious even when the model was the best frontier.

And codex still uses phrases and syntax in prose ostensibly for the user as though they forgot people are actively reading this stuff.

Product is unquestionably where Anthropic excels. It is what carried it through periods where its thinking model lagged.

bredren··on I've been waiting over a month for Anthropic to respond to my billing issue
I had a similar thing happen where I was looking to recover funds from unexpected extra usage charges and got went through an identical experience.

I realize the company barely has time to cash checks, but failing to handle small fry reasonable charge disputes should be handled appropriately.

bredren··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
It is satisfying to see someone hacking on deprecated hardware and software also is keen to look forward into Vision Pro.
bredren··on Sonnet 4.6 Elevated Rate of Errors
Claude Code and Codex are not SaaS products in the traditional sense.
bredren··on Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era
Can anyone point at the critical vulnerabilities already patched as a result of mythos? (see 3:52 in the video)

For example, the 27 year old openbsd remote crash bug, or the Linux privilege escalation bugs?

I know we've had some long-standing high profile, LLM-found bugs discussed but seems unlikely there was speculation they were found by a previously unannounced frontier model.

bredren··on GLM-5.1: Towards Long-Horizon Tasks
It is a big claim without the source and prompting.
bredren··on GLM-5.1: Towards Long-Horizon Tasks
I had thought this, but my experience initially was that performance degradation began getting noticeable not long after crossing the old 250k barrier.

So, it has been convenient to not have hard stops / allow for extra but I still try to /clear at an actual 25% of the 1M anyhow.

This is in contrast to my use of the 1M opus model this past fall over the API, which seemed to perform more steadily.

bredren··on Free stuff makes us irrational
I also didn’t like the example. How may people know the difference between chocolate quality?

Some for sure, but I wouldn’t count on it for interpreting price elasticity.

I still believe in the premise because of the action on Facebook buy nothing groups.

bredren··on Tailscale's new macOS home
This is not an unknown issue at the fruit co.

Can anyone speculate on any rational if not good reasons for not solving this problem yet?

bredren··on Qwen3.6-Plus: Towards real world agents
Apple continues to compare to prior versions of Apple Silicon. I suspect it is a mix of trying to provide useful, realistic upgrade information and numbers that still sound good for those not paying attention.

I don't think any org doing this is necessarily being deceptive, so long as there's some reasonable basis for the chosen comparable(s).

For example, comparing a new iPhone to a prior Android phone might make sense if the install base is considerably large and Apple is targeting the cohort for user acquisition. (~"These benchmarks are not for you.")

The community will always run the numbers and get the clicks for the benchmarks not filled in by the 1st party. I noticed what appeared to be some movement from Apple in content they've produced to get ahead of this with recent product content.

bredren··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
The trick isn't to patch it once, but to create a system that can reproduce your patches against each release as they come in. Then, when code changes make fixes non-trivial calling in a headless session to heal your fixes.
bredren··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
On a related note, ChatGPT.com changed how it handles large text pastes this past week.

It now behaves like Claude, attaching the paste as a file for upload rather than inlining it.

This affected page UX some and reduces the cost of the browser tab some.

At some point, maybe still true, very long conversations ~froze/crashed ChatGPT pages.

bredren··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
It is also intended to protect the usage patterns of pro subscribers.

As has been amply explained, the API pricing per token is far more for equivalent use when maximizing a subscription plan.

It isn’t really a massive hurdle to deal with this full SPA load check. If one is even aware it exists they already have the skills to bypass it anyway.

I get why people would “what about” the automation inherit in what OpenAI is doing but that is a separate matter.

Other businesses and applications can put into place their own hurdles and anti bot practices to protect the models they’ve leaned into—-and they have been.

bredren··on Arm releases first in-house chip, with Meta as debut customer
That’s fine but this dream was previously pursued with mobile hardware.

FWIW, oculus represented a true competitive advantage. And I don’t think it was a coincidence that the Supernatural acquisition was temporarily blocked by the feds.

I think Apple was genuinely worried that fitness was (or still is) a killer use case and threat to Vision Pro.

The delay was enough to make FB lose focus / pivot again into AI.

bredren··on Meta Partners with Arm to Develop New Class of Data Center Silicon
The key early signals from OpenAI FB missed were when OpenAI Five was featured DOTA 2's The International in 2018 and in April 2019 when it beat the pro team OG.

I think the people who care about that game and used the types media channels FB monitored was too small to show up on the company's radar.

But I'm not convinced Zuck was truly all in on VR. I thought the switch to Meta was a hasty attempt to rebrand under fire of a whistleblower / document leak cycle.

Despite all the money spent on VR labs, I always thought the pivot was much more of a Philip-Morris -> Altria thing than Dunkin' Donuts -> Dunkin'.

bredren··on Schedule tasks on the web
What you're describing is absolutely where we're headed.

But the entire SWE apparatus can be handled.

Automated A/B testing of the feature. Progressive exposure deployment of changes, you name it.

bredren··on Apple discontinues the Mac Pro
I’m much less concerned about the Mac Pro and more concerned we won’t see an XDR Ultra Display to replace the 32”.
bredren··on Goodbye to Sora
I think you’d have to participate, but this was a real thing and it was fun.

For example, there is one that was a making sort of Macy’s thanksgiving day-style parade floats.

And you could pick virtually any content type and see this interpreted as “real” floats.

It did not require a ton of effort, for example you could reply to the above example existing with the prompt “do this, but have the float theme be ‘meet the feebles’”

And if you know of that film and recognized the AI’s interpretation of it in that context and it was half decent it was entertaining.

Not all “trends” if you can call them that were so simple to do well with.

Often the prompts needed to be elaborate and required multiple generations to really get a feel for if you were on the right track.

I think they did have something here and probably someone will do it again and it will work.

bredren··on 90% of Claude-linked output going to GitHub repos w <2 stars
Some of the comments point toward genuine concern, some smell of gatekeeping.

It is interesting to see a flip in attitude toward GitHub.

bredren··on Goodbye to Sora
There were ~trends similar to what appeared early in TikTok.

For example, early TikTok had the Boss Walk.

Sora had no big content trends split into many micro trends in some established ~universe.

bredren··on So where are all the AI apps?
The models are not well trained on bringing products to market.

And even “product engineers” often do not have experience going from zero to post sales support on a saas on their own.

It is a skill set of its own to make product decisions and not only release but stick with it after the thing is not immediately successful.

The ability to get some other idea going quickly with AI actually works against the habits needed to tough through the valley(s).

bredren··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
Claude Code breaks production features and doesn't say anything about it. The product has just shifted gears with little to no ceremony.

I expect that from something guiding the market, but there have been times where stuff changes, and it isn't even clear if it is a bug or a permanent decision. I suspect they don't even know.

bredren··on Astral to Join OpenAI
No IP will stand up to AI, from Star Wars to Linear. Things are about to change.
bredren··on AirPods Max 2
Indeed, like MagSafe charging—they simplify. Simplicity has a premium.

That said, my first pair failed out of Apple Care and resulted in a full cost replacement. The APM sub is littered with stories of the BT module failing.

I’m sure it is ludicrous to some but I often measure value by utility and I go through entire workdays wearing this product.

bredren··on AirPods Max 2
They will replace worn out fabric on the v1s with AppleCare. Have to send them in but it works.
bredren··on Chrome DevTools MCP (2025)
I also do this. My primary use case is for reproducing page layout and styling at any given tree in the dom. So, capturing various states of a component etc.

I also use it to automatically retrieve page responsiveness behavior in complex web apps. It uses playwright to adjust the width and monitor entire trees for exact changes which it writes structured data that includes the complete cascade of styles relevant with screenshots to support the snapshots.

There are tools you can buy that let you do this kind of inspection manually, but they are designed for humans. So, lots of clickety-clackety and human speed results.

---

My first reaction to seeing this FP was why are people still releasing MCPs? So far I've managed to completely avoid that hype loop and went straight to building custom CLIs even before skills were a thing.

I think people are still not realizing the power and efficiency of direct access to things you want and skills to guide the AI in using the access effectively.

Maybe I'm missing something in this particular use case?

bredren··on Treasure hunter freed from jail after refusing to turn over shipwreck gold
This presumes he knew he would be held that long.

Presuming he holds keys to vast wealth, the calculation would have shifted over time. Especially once he was serving his original sentence again starting a year ago.

Another consideration is that many go to jail longer with no upside once getting released.
