brbsix··on Pokemon Go, Security, and Obsolescence
It should be pretty easy to get around this by using Magisk[0] systemless root, is it not? Magisk is able to pass Google's SafetyNet tamper detection API which IIRC is what Pokemon Go uses to detect root. Works for Android Pay at least, which also prevents use of the app on rooted devices.

brbsix··on German push to ban combustion-engine cars by 2030 wins support
> The stupidity with wich we argue for retaining useless jobs is baffling.

What do you mean by 'retaining useless jobs'? We aren't talking about subsidizing carriage makers or wheelwrights here. We're talking about jobs that will be lost as a direct result of legislation, not market obsolescence.

brbsix··on Backpage Raided, CEO Arrested on Sex-Trafficking Charges
That was my first thought, even before I heard what Warren had to say. IIRC, Lending Tree was doing something similar. People associated with the company were opening accounts with which to borrow or lend money in order to juice the books and report increased earnings.

brbsix··on Typora – A cross platform markdown editor
Is that deb source line correct? It's listed in the installation instructions as:

    deb https://typora.io linux/
`apt-get update` barks out the following warning:

W: Conflicting distribution: https://typora.io linux/ InRelease (expected linux but got )
To suppress the message I ended up changing it to:

    deb https://typora.io/linux ./
brbsix··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
I'm not seeing the "market forces" in googamooga's post. Rather I see men with guns (the Russian government) prohibiting hospitals and clinics from purchasing stents. The initiation of force here is quite obviously immoral. I'd like to see less of it on this planet, not more.
brbsix··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
> Women get lower pay because they say that's what other women get.

At least in the U.S., sex-based wage discrimination is prohibited under the Equal Pay Act of 1964. If you find an employer paying women less because "that's what other women get", be sure to let us know.

brbsix··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
Underpaid according to who? The point I was making was that salaries, like all prices, are dictated by market forces. They aren't dictated by some arbitrary metric (e.g. hard work or intelligence) that you, as some uninterested third-party, decide.
brbsix··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
There's a popular narrative that CEO compensation is at the expense of workers, that workers could be paid a livable wage if only executives could do without their extravagent bonuses. It's commonly referenced with respect to Walmart. I believe this is the myth the OP was attempting to dispel.
brbsix··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
> Executive comp is a major racket, enforced by the standard that this is "what the market average is". Which is set by executives overpaying themselves.

> Ask yourself if your CEO is really working 100x as hard as you, or 100x smarter than you. The answer is usually a definite no.

Ask yourself, does a software developer in SF work 1000x harder than a laborer in the Congo? Is a PhD Physicist really as smart as a NYC sanitation worker?

Apart from the emotionally manipulative language, I'm not sure what your point is. CEO compensation is a price. What does hard work or intelligence have to do with the price of something?

brbsix··on ORWL – The first open source, physically secure computer
If your device is grabbed by the FBI from the Glen Park library, I don't think they'll be turning it off. Wouldn't they use some sort of device[0] to maintain the power supply? I assume they would also be aware a key fob was in use, at least if you were using reasonably well-known hardware like the ORWL.

I noticed the campaign details indicated the power supply voltage is monitored. Will this protect against a hot-plug?

brbsix··on The Effect of State Marijuana Legalizations
Agreed. Personally I find the moral argument, that people have self-ownership over their bodies and that it is immoral to initiate force against others (particularly for victimless "crimes"), far more compelling. You wouldn't argue against slavery on the basis of the potential for vast technological advancement decades or centuries after its abolition, would you? Nor would you cede the argument simply because it appears economically inviable.
brbsix··on U.S. regulators accuse Palantir of bias against Asians
I have nothing to say about profiling individuals but cheating appears to be a huge issue among international students. Per the WSJ [0]:

Public universities in the U.S. recorded 5.1 reports of alleged cheating for every 100 international students, versus one report per 100 domestic students
Faculty singled out Chinese students in particular.

brbsix··on Bike manufacturer sees huge reduction in delivery damage by printing TV on box
I don't know but people do it all the time when receiving large quantities of narcotics or merchandise paid for with stolen credit cards. You write "return to sender" on the parcel and leave it unopened by your front door. Sounds like a bad urban legend akin to "if you ask an undercover cop whether they're a cop, they have to tell you" but plenty of people still do it.
brbsix··on Hacker takes down CEO wire transfer scammers
Even if they were prepared for cyber crime, would they be prepared to act on information you give them? Sure, if you supply law enforcement with the location of your recently stolen electronic device they will go after it (as I've had them do twice now). That's pretty straightforward. On the other hand if you give them the details of some purported fraudster, of whom you are not even a victim, a thorough investigation would be necessary prior to any action on their part. At least I'd hope so, otherwise there's a whole new genre of swatting (i.e. framing unsuspecting victims as black hat hackers) that has yet to be exploited.
brbsix··on Why does Google Play need constant GPS?
To me, the concerning bit of software is not the operating system (which is open source and fairly transparent) but rather Google Play Services, which is a proprietary background service that has nearly complete access to your device. Unfortunately so many applications make use of it that it's hard to ditch. There are open source efforts to replace it [0] but AFAIK nothing ready for consumers.

brbsix··on What Happened After Portugal Decriminalized All Drugs, from Weed to Heroin
Barring evidence of distribution or an admission otherwise, I wonder how they could ever prosecute someone for greater quantities. Suppose you're found with 100 tabs of Oxycodone. For a casual user, that might be a 3 month supply. For someone else, it may barely cover 10 days. This remains true for other drugs. I knew someone who used to take LSD every morning just so they could take a shit. I don't know what a 10-day supply looked like for them and that's pretty much my point, how will law enforcement know either?
brbsix··on An Analysis of Motivations for Income Redistribution [pdf]
Are you presently worried about someone robbing you because they are starving? In the third-world, absolutely. In the United States anyone who's starving has ready access to SNAP, food banks, or (worse-case scenario) dumpstered groceries.

I'd be more concerned about being robbed because someone has a serious substance-abuse issue, was raised in a broken single-parent household, there's a complete lack of entry-level jobs, or something of that sort, none of which is aided (but rather is perhaps aggravated) by increased levels of income redistribution.

brbsix··on An Analysis of Motivations for Income Redistribution [pdf]
That's like saying "This is why farmers like being fed. They get to live comfortable lives while their crop earns them more crop."

Your money doesn't earn you more money doing nothing. In a free market, you need to use it efficiently and in a way that provides value to other people. If you are careless or unlucky you will lose it.

To clarify, it's not free money.

brbsix··on An Analysis of Motivations for Income Redistribution [pdf]
> I've yet to meet a person who was against redistribution, as well as against certain benefits they get from tax money (police force, etc).

I've met plenty. There are those who relish the opportunity for free market alternatives to public police forces.

brbsix··on Airbnb Adopts Rules in Effort to Fight Discrimination by Its Hosts
> The sort of hosting you want to do is going to have to route through some informal mechanism, like an email list or word of mouth or some web forum, or maybe a random Facebook group. It's incompatible with a Bigcorp that wants to make money, lots of money.

Craigslist's sublet/temporary section is a pretty good place for this. I've found it works pretty well being able to rent a place for a few weeks while the owner is out of town/country. Obviously unlike AirBnB there is no false pretense of security, but that's fair enough seeing as how you (as owner/lessor) have the greatest incentive to look after that.

brbsix··on Show HN: Share your Unix shell with people you trust
I used to, but ZetoTier[0] has made that a thing of the past. Now, no matter where I am or what sort of connection I have, it's like I have all my devices (and a few other people's) on a local LAN. I use it all the time to SSH into my laptop from my phone when I leave it someplace. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

brbsix··on Grateful Dead Fan Timothy Tyler Has Been Granted Clemency
There's no math to determine the quantity of active ingredient in illicit substances. That requires analysis. Including the carrier keeps it simple. It's also self-aggrandizing, as it's much more impressive for the DEA to announce they've seized 10g of "LSD" than 10mg. Again, this is coming from an agency that is known to weight the root ball when calculating the yield of seized marijuana grows.
brbsix··on New Digital Currency Spikes as Drug Dealers Get More Secrecy
I'm curious as to the OP's source as well. I found a recent investigatory paper at https://github.com/AdamISZ/ConfidentialTransactionsDoc/blob/... but nothing official.
brbsix··on The French Number – Connect to a random French person and talk about anything
This reminds me of #CALLBRUSSELS, a Brussels tourism initiative wherein anyone could call public phones throughout Brussels via https://call.brussels and chat about anything. There were live video feeds as well. IIRC this was in January, right around the time Trump and others were making negative comments, so it was meant to dispel concerns about safety in the city.

Here's an article discussing it in detail: http://www.ibtimes.com/callbrussels-new-tourism-initiative-d...

There's also some video content: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRnybwEvQsU

brbsix··on Show HN: Tool Time - how well do you know your dev tools?
"took down many large sites when it failed"

^ Describing AWS Lambda. May want to fix that one.

brbsix··on Show HN: TheWorst.is
Yeah but to make an appropriate comparison, I'd have to make my own app "The Worst People On Earth", give it the tagline "Some people are literally the worst. TheWorstPeopleOnEarth.com lets you tell 'em by mailing physical protest postcards, all online. Research the worst people doing the most terrible things to all the nicest people and join the people-powered mailroom blitz." Ohh, but by the way, every single person listed is Mexican. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier.

To be clear, I'm not defending Republicans, I just don't appreciate the Trojan horse partisanship.
