brandonkm··on Branford Marsalis’ Take on Students Today
> not that the constant advertising from universities, corporations and society at large helps.

Indeed.

It also seems to me that a large part of the university experience is 'finding yourself'. Unfortunately, I don't think this process fully materializes in the vast majority of students.

brandonkm··on Ask YC: Do any of you find yourself reading comments before the actual link?
> There are lots of times when the comment threads are more valuable/interesting than the links.

I find this is the case most of the time here. I enjoy reading engaging articles being 'hacked' apart.

brandonkm··on My visit to American Apparel
American Apparel is an amazing company.

'A 5,000 person, $500 million low margin clothing company, operating from a single factory in the least business-friendly state of one of the highest "cost" manufacturing countries. Beating the overseas sweatshops and still growing rapidly.'

brandonkm··on Semantics in HTML 5
> The only way to create a truly searchable and meaningful web is for us all to use an agreed upon set of tags that add meaning.

completely agree.

brandonkm··on Encouraged Commentary (cool use of jQuery to enhance blog commenting)
I would love to see this integrated with disqus. Seems like these two are complimentary technologies.
brandonkm··on New Git Homepage
Could someone please explain what that creature thing eating the trees is all about? Maybe i'm missing something...
brandonkm··on Cuil on Business Week list of most successful companies of 2008
"The first rule of cuils PR firm is you do not talk about cuils PR firm"
brandonkm··on Have You Seen Apple's Netbook?
I used to think the same thing, but i'm not so sure anymore.

I think the closedness of the iPhone is actually beneficial (to that particular phone). Skipping past the "average consumer doesn't care about the iPhone being a closed platform" and the "closed platform doesn't let developers innovate as quick" arguments, the iPhone excells at what it does and now -relies- on its closedness to maintain its market position.

The main point of the iPhone was integration with apples line of products, thus the iPhone is just another addition to the apple product line. The system behind that is there to make that product what it is and nothing more. Because, you are dealing with the mobile space with the iPhone, the best way to control how much innovation is taking place on your device is to keep it closed. After all, can't have apps that introduce new functionality that could potentially be folded into future devices, that could hurt the iPhone revenue stream.

brandonkm··on 10,000 hours
There isn't a magical threshold of hours one must reach to be a "superstar" or "extremely good". There also isn't much substance in the claim of people bailing even before 5,000 hours. It seems like the crux of this argument is just throwing 'numbers' and 'hours' out there with disregard to other factors that come into play when someone makes a time commitment this large. Things like efficiency, pre-disposition, and teaching others are all factors.

So, even if someone invests 3750 hours they can be just as good. This all seems besides the point though, when you are investing thousands of hours into something your not keeping track of 'hours put in' or 'exactly how good you are', its a passion and you're just into it. If success follows then great, if not then that wouldn't stop someone from continuing on.

brandonkm··on Triumph of Nerds: Steve Jobs & Bill Gates (1 of 3)
I never heard of that one, thanks for the recommendation!
brandonkm··on The Crunchies 2008: Vote
Technically yes, but actually no.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Do YC Startups Lack Spine?
Not ruthless but certainly assertive.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Do YC Startups Lack Spine?
Mircosoft was VERY assertive at first. Without laying out a detailed history, very early on gates had a keen business sense and was quite ruthless. They may have been 'building something people want', but the seeds of what microsoft would later become were without a doubt being planted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Hobbyists
brandonkm··on How to Network: 12 Tips for Geeks
Exactly. I'm filing this one under 'general networking advice'.
brandonkm··on SenCSs - CSS framework that doesn’t provide a layout system (just everything else)
A CSS framework are a collection of files that provide defaults for you to customize or build upon when your writing your stylesheets. Whether its typography or page layout widths or grids/columns, the main point of a framework is to cut down on development time by providing you a base that you can build upon and customize.

I can't say for sure why you may want to use one, that really depends on the project at hand. One argument can be that you can just run with it without having to define and test your own styles. Also, a framework can eliminate a lot of cross browser issues that may arise and give you consistency across a wide range of browsers.

brandonkm··on Christmas Tree in Your Unix Shell
This is great!
brandonkm··on Charlie Rose - An hour with Bill Gates
He's pretty forthcoming on how unsuccessful they have been in the search space. I don't think he is too worried though, he has his people working day and night trying to compete with google and during that hour interview he probably made $750,000.
brandonkm··on Microsoft Surface UnBoxing Photos
They should really start pushing surface units in different sizes. As amazing as they are (they have one at my uni that i've had a chance to check out), they are pretty big. Right now the size that they are coming in are good for people sitting around the unit touching it and checking it out, but I would like to see what other form factors surface technology can be in.

They also may want to work on bringing the price on these things down too.

brandonkm··on AdultFriendFinder has filed for an IPO
Reading the S1 that they filed, they (obviously) are trying to offset the debt they have through liquidation of their common stock. I can sum up the report as "we are making lots of money, have fairly significant debt, we need to move our shares now". AFF seems to be profitable and I see no reason why they shouldn't go public. While they are generating pretty impressive revenues they can also function as an umbrella in which adult oriented startups can fold into. Possibly providing further value to their shareholders. This is actually a pretty unique IPO , especially in the web sector.

I also think it will be entertaining to see AdultFriendFinder ring the NYSE bell.

brandonkm··on Hacker News goes Christmas
never say never!
brandonkm··on Ask YC: Let's start a Hacker News book club
I think the trend now is adding a 'd' to the end of your startup name, so possibly bookclubd? or maybe just bookd?
brandonkm··on Ask YC: What's the best way and place to start freelancing?
Most of the time with freelance coding potential clients want to see evidence of previous projects, or personal projects So to extend on what others have stated here... network --> work on personal projects --> practice --> ??? --> profit!
brandonkm··on jQuery 1.3 ßeta
I'm really happy with these recent upgrades. Especially in regards to event delegation, not having an effective baked in solution for event delegation was one of my biggest complaints about the previous releases.
brandonkm··on Rumors of Upcoming Microsoft Cut-Backs
Of course Microsoft was going to make cut backs. I don't see how this was a surprise at all. To be honest, I think cut backs combined with an increased focus on core components of the company is exactly what they may need at this point. Hopefully 2009 is a year in which Microsoft can deliver on a corporate strategy that actually puts them in a more competitive position than their rivals in this economic climate.
brandonkm··on App Store Pricing (It's not a free market)
I think that problem stems from apples vice grip on the app store environment and iphone development ecosystem rather than lack of marketing creativity on the developers part.
brandonkm··on Clickpass (YC S07) is being acquired
I'm guessing that shares in synthasite were a large part of this transaction. Otherwise, this will probably be a "undisclosed amount".
brandonkm··on Apple 'Netbooks', Eh?
I remember a quote where steve jobs described the netbook space as "a race to the bottom".

This is true to one extent and to another extent I don't think this market is within apple's laptop scope. Especially considering pricepoints and the recently released macbook pros.

brandonkm··on Google App Engine Pricing Model
Those are actually some pretty innovative new features. Unfortunately, I don't think there has been enough of a shift away from what a lot of people saw as core issues ( python only, etc.) to flock to app engine en masse. When I check out who is using app engine right now, i'm a bit underwhelmed. http://code.google.com/appengine/casestudies.html
brandonkm··on If programming languages were religions
There is some truth to that statement.
brandonkm··on Why Climbers Die On Mount Everest
After reading this article I would like to know what kind of training climbers engage in before climbing Mount Everest. It seems to me that at the types of elevations Mount Everest is working with, the preparation you would need beforehand would be quite intense. Not only that, but the technology you would need to offset whats happening to your body at those heights would be interesting to investigate as well.
