brandensilva··on Why decline in generalists leads to disjointed games and harms tool quality
Oh totally and this is exactly what I mean.

I've listened to Chris and am a huge fan of his. The depth, experience, and love he puts into POE clearly demonstrates a generalist who gets it. Chris is a linchpin.

This is exactly the kind of people Blizzard lacks. They used to exist but they pushed out many of the generalists for the factory model of specialists and haven't really recovered since.

That doesn't mean they don't make decent games given the talent of the specialists in art and development, but the game design itself really requires a broader individual or group to bring it together.

Thanks for share.

I feel like it's been improving with them offering more ways to discover music that sounds like what you heard but not the same artists.

But yeah I still feel more can be done. Their new Hi-Fi package is supposed to have more options too.

brandensilva··on Why decline in generalists leads to disjointed games and harms tool quality
I tell you what, the Diablo 4 game is a perfect example of disjointedness that comes from pure specialists with little to no one who is a generalist that can bridge departments together in a way that makes for a better game and experience. And while they have made strides to implementing much of the community feedback for Season 2 many months later after much of the gamers have left, it isn't the same thing as having a leader who already gets the cross disciplinary shortcomings that resulted in such a poor end game that was out of touch and underwhelming. Something only a generalist leader with some authority, gaming experience, gaming systems and design, and passion could pull off.
brandensilva··on Tesla is launching their developer APIs
I tried signing up but was rejected. It did mention energy products so it might include it if you gain access.

It looks like they are just doing a free trial to hook in business focused customers so I'm doubtful it would be a good source for personal use when Elon turns on the money spigot.

I wish they'd do the same for their solar panels. Trying to get to that solar panel data seems much harder than it should be.
brandensilva··on FAA authorizes Zipline to deliver commercial packages using drones
It seems like a drone falling out of the sky could still kill people. It just seems less likely to us because there aren't as many right now to worry about like cars.

I like these devices for use for medical supplies but do worry how polluted the skies could become when multiple companies are flying these things for standard packages.

brandensilva··on Turbo 8 is dropping TypeScript
After using typescript I could never go back. The amount of times it's saved me or got me up to speed quickly is countless. It does come with a cost and god the error messages are just awful sometimes but I'd die before I ever work in a js only project again.
brandensilva··on Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting
I feel moving away from Google Chrome still sends a message but yes long term I think we will need to move away from Chromium given Google is running it into the ground. My hope is that Chromium will get forked and supported by other companies and individuals with ethics around a free and open web that doesn't involve Google Adware.
brandensilva··on Becoming a contractor
It is interesting hearing different perspectives going into this kind of work.

My experience has been a bit different. I've never had a famine cycle in the last 12 years of doing front end development and product design.

Part of the reason I'm sure is I've always said yes to challenging and desirable projects and risen to the occasion. The fear of failing helps me adapt quickly I'm sure as well to new technology.

My clients often end up being long term clients I work years with.

Income wise things vary year to year but I'm often in the $150k to $250k range in a medium cost area where my money goes a bit farther than the west coast.

In order to push higher I know I'll need to put more effort into fine tuning my target market and value propositions. Also building more clout, becoming an authority in a specialized field, or investing more back into the business with marketing and sales would go a long ways. If I were to push into consultancy I feel confident I could push into the 250k to 350k range more but I am quite happy still slinging code rather than advising.

I'm happy people find success in this arena. It's important that people have a good mix of choices that works for them so congrats to OP for finding your desirable path.
