brandensilva··on Brain waves appear to wash out waste during sleep in mice
It seems neat in theory but I imagine the brain having to operate an additional 8 hours a day might actually accelerate mental decline faster as we age given you would be using it 1/3 more but it is an interesting concept.
brandensilva··on On clock faces, 4 is Expressed as IIII, not IV
More celebration days, no complaints here. I wish humanity cared more about such universal celebrations that brought us together.

Of course those days would be very hectic travel wise if the entire population of earth were to migrate around on those days.

brandensilva··on On clock faces, 4 is Expressed as IIII, not IV
The 13 month per calendar year (Mayan calendar) just makes so much sense as a web developer but somehow as a human it also seems hella mundane to have the same 28 day cycle repeated. Maybe that last day of the year party would make up for it though.
brandensilva··on Why are most sofas so bad?
West elm has been pretty bad for most stuff for us too. Surprisingly we have an okay Urban couch from them that's held up well the last 5 years. The cushions haven't maintained their shape all that much and the feathers occasionally poke through which are my only complaints. Our little kids used to jump on it before we moved it downstairs so the frame was at least built well and it's still pretty comfortable.

Id never buy one again from them though after having everything else fail on us.

brandensilva··on House passes bill to force TikTok sale from Chinese owner or ban the app
Id like to see the Uighar camps but sure as heck known that isn't happening. /s

It's hard for me to imagine a lot isn't filtered out. There is a reason they have a separate app. It's likely one is heavily filtered and the other is their propaganda tool but I'd like to see more evidence to indicate that but it's a hard thing to track given they could be just feeding kids the worst things for them or favorable views to their party and we wouldn't even know.

brandensilva··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
Agreed. I and many developers could make killer PWAs if the support was there. The web has been hindered too long from Apple and that needs to change to support healthy competition.
brandensilva··on YC: Requests for Startups
I think the larger dev ecosystem has created a bit of backlash against the big players for some time and aren't quick to adopt the new tech they are dishing out. I would guess taking a 30% cut, lawsuits, and unfair terms has left a sour taste in everyone's mouth.

And it wasn't until competition stepped up with an indie dev, aka a YouTube VR app called Juno made for the Vision Pro, that even Google decided to jump into developing YouTube for the Vision Pro.

So now we are back at the chicken and the egg problem and few big devs want to support the giants. It'll happen probably eventually when monetization becomes a reality for devs embracing the tech but I don't see it happening any time soon.

brandensilva··on React has grown beyond its original promise and it's causing more harm than good
I believe Map was released in 2015 as part of ES6 so while not new, it still feels new in some code bases. Some people also confuse it with Array.prototype.map a lot.

People just assume every data structure operates like an array since it is the most commonly used without realizing the underlying object nature of the language. Like the idea of getters and setters coming from OOP paradigm is lost to fresh devs over the last 5 years using the FP paradigm as their primary means of coding in React.

So yeah some of the fundamental are missing but also most of the time this knowledge probably isn't utilized by React FP only devs in their day to day.

brandensilva··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
I mostly agree with you but from the sounds of the news across the pond it seems like the EU government, as well as our own, wants to eliminate encryption, VPNs or add back doors into systems to some degree.

There are obvious reasons to do so to combat crime but at the expense of privacy, freedom, and anonymity.

And I've quite been happy to see Apple stand up against such government control but fear the trend this will set.

brandensilva··on Google is tracking you even in incognito mode, new disclaimer is up
I don't think the average user understands that but for us more tech driven folks we've known this for ages and probably take it further with VPNs and not using Chrome at all for any serious privacy searching where we want to avoid cookies saving, advertiser fingerprinting, DNS and ISP tracking, etc.
brandensilva··on Twitch to Cut 500 Employees, About 35% of Staff
Worse change in startup history while we are in an high borrowing rate in an inflationary environment with limited capital.
brandensilva··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
No one wants to chase the low end market in the US. Even if the tech pans out it just means more work faster resource depletion given the infra isn't there yet, and less profits. And then you think well a hybrid would fill the void better anyways if you have to sacrifice range for cheaper EVs.
brandensilva··on California regulators vote to keep Diablo Canyon nuclear plant open 5 more years
China has the solar panel market cornered, so probably. Of course they might decide to cut us off given all the trade drama so I'm not sure even that is a sure thing.
brandensilva··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
Adobe XD never gained adoption so I don't see that happening with this failed deal so you will be 100% wrong.

Where Adobe will likely win out though is in the AI side of things so time will tell if that would be enough to replace Figma alone.

brandensilva··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
What would you want Figma to do that Adobe cannot do itself?

In the end 3 probes is way too much legal tape for even Adobe to step into hence the abandoned deal being cheaper in the long run than fighting to acquire Figma.

brandensilva··on Widespread FBI abuse of foreign spy law sets off "alarm bells," tech group says
On top of that with the leaked classified documents that Trump exposed that compromised the agents in the first place it is probably a good reason to keep tabs on him to make sure he isn't working with a foreign agent. He should receive all the same treatment as any other citizen of course but let's not pretend Trump is an angel. He's gotten himself into a lot of shit.
brandensilva··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
Just a slight clarification. The first Apple iPhone did not have an app store.
brandensilva··on We don't have official RSS feed support for now, but we're working on a solution
I hear ya but who sets the priorities? Management typically right? So if they don't see value in RSS and move their KPIs it will never be implemented.

And well profit motives push managements decisions so it's no wonder it never got prioritized. Nothing nefarious about it. RSS makes Google no money.

brandensilva··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
He or someone wrote this 6 hours ago on his Instagram:

"Two years ago I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane and let it crash into the ground, took some bad advice, and decided to remove the wreckage. Today I was sentenced to 6 months in Federal Prison. Thank you to my unconditional loving family and friends. You know who you are, and who you aren't :) My incredible lawyer, and Federal Judge Walter, for understanding the truth of the situation, and giving me a second chance at life. This situation could have been a lot worse, and am extremely grateful am here to talk about it. look forward to teaching our youth from my mistake, and the lessons I have learned from this, it has changed me as a person forever, and therefore, I am so excited for this next chapter of implementing those changes into society for the better. made a video about this on my YouTube channel if you'd like to watch it.Always wear your parachute my friends. Much love"

Not really sure what to expect from his post as it gives me vibes of something his mother would write for him if he's locked up and cannot do so himself.

brandensilva··on IKEA sensors for doors and windows, motion, water leaks
Now I'm imagining a self destructing roborock vacuum burning down my house when China goes deep in anti US territory.

Best policy I abide by is to prevent any data from exiting my network or remote control period. I don't care who is spying.

brandensilva··on A secret deal let Spotify bypass Android's app store fees
Yes and it is also a borderline thing to me. Amazon Basics does the same thing and it's pretty messed up that you can put a product in the same marketplace you control and run out the competition.

These walled gardens need to be opened up.

brandensilva··on How to boss without being bossy
Yeah I think you boiled it down well that interruptions are often abused and so people become desensitized to meaningful levels of urgency.

Context matters a whole lot, some of which doesn't even have to be verbal, but I've found that adding the why goes a long ways in getting people on board because no one wants to dive head first blindly into a demand or request without knowing the reason or desired outcome.

brandensilva··on You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It
Lol major distopian vibes. "The government keeps me safe by preventing me from doing anything against the law (that they decide at their own free will). I love my brain chip."
brandensilva··on You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It
Yup the software side has been built into the pricing of the hardware. They weren't the first to do this either since this business model has been around for quite awhile since we got away from buying software as a box.

It's also more convenient for the consumer to have a one and done payment.

The only thing I wish is if there was a monthly maintenance package when my devices get older so I can keep getting updates that keep my device running fast, secure, and can maintain some form compatibility with most apps.

brandensilva··on How to boss without being bossy
It is interesting how this changes the tone.

"You will do this" no agency, no control, no considerations, skips calling out authority and goes direct

"Will you do this?" Direct, has agency but potentially confrontational if you say no

"I need you to do this" indicates their authority, direct, no control, could be inconsiderate to some as they overriding your priorities for their own

It can to be softened up with a question but if they really need you to do it I feel like your response also softens it up.

I think adding a acknowledgement of inconvenience, reason, urgency or explanation to it also helps.

"Hey Jim, I know you are working on X and this will be inconvenient for you but I need you to tackle Y" ideally a reason or compliment would be good too.

"I need you to do this because you have the most expertise on this and feel no one can do it well but you"

"I need you to do this right now. We are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars with the web server down" I feel this is an acceptable reason to demand to interrupt someone to take care of something that has a major impact on everyone

And for the life saving measures saying "I need you to evacuate this building immediately" is completely acceptable to me with no reason needed. Being butt hurt over a demand versus a kind request is better than dying.

brandensilva··on How to boss without being bossy
So does everything have to be phrased as a question for you to feel better about a request?

Aka "Hey Jim, can you tackle this issue?"

brandensilva··on MOVEit global security incident
At this rate is there any data on Americans that hasn't leaked? I don't feel like it's far fetched request to allow a one time change of SSNs given how poorly companies and the government have handled our data.
brandensilva··on Switching to Elixir
I was gonna say the actor model stems from state machines I believe. It's a nice way to manage state and communication. It reminds me of supervisors and processes in general but not program language specific.
brandensilva··on No dogs were harmed in the making of this app
Right with software we have abstractions and flexibility. With hardware they are grounded more to the physical capabilities of the hardware.

Of course software is also limited by hardware capabilities but we can code whatever we want on that hardware as long as it fits within the provided specs.

brandensilva··on Why decline in generalists leads to disjointed games and harms tool quality
You hit it quite well on what I was getting at.

I think many of us did enjoy Diablo 4 but the systems that make an ARPG shine fell through the cracks which is surprising given Blizzard defined the category.

I am very much am aware they aren't the same people running the show now from Blizzard North, and they had some major team shake ups in D4s dev cycle, so that was part of the problem but it's hard not to have high expectations.

It's just those pieces or connections in-between the excellent departmental work that fell apart, along with the foundation of an ARPG being flawed, that a gaming generalist could have solved to bring it all together.

I imagine things would look quite different now if that generalist person or persons on D4 played ARPGs for decades, had Diablo DNA infused in them with equal experience in game design and systems, and had some authority they could have made the best ARPG all over again since D2 given how good D4 is in so many ways. They equally learned a lot from D3 and it's shortcomings but that knowledge all felt lost in D4.
