brandensilva··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Yeah it's the caching that's doing the work for them though honestly. So many cached queries saving the GPUs from hard hits.
brandensilva··on I’m joining OpenAI
Right, he indicated he's losing $10-20k a month on OpenClaw. Might as well let OpenAI absorb those losses and join the rocket ship.

The guy is a multi millionaire from selling his old software so I'm doubtful it is about the money for him at this point as much as it is the experience working with this tech on another level.

brandensilva··on State Attorneys General Want to Tie Online Access to ID
It isn't a coincidence we have two Palantir articles on the front page and this. It's in the cards and American's seem to be ignoring it and are more than happy to accept the dystopian future where this leads.

It's incredibly sad as an optimistic person trying to find any silver lining here.

brandensilva··on Palantir vs. the "Republik": US analytics firm takes magazine to court
The deep state is their former name but I like your reference or the Epstein class which is far better at describing how both sides of the political aisle are compromised by the rich and powerful who know no laws or punishment for crimes any normal person would be subjected too.
brandensilva··on Palantir Gets Millions of Dollars from New York City's Public Hospitals
Palantir is a threat to all American privacy and likely Democracy given Thiel wants to tear it down and owns Palantir.

This is why government and corporations should not be embedded together as they have near zero laws or punishment for spying on Americans.

It isn't even just about the invasion of our rights but the government shouldn't choose winners and losers like we are seeing. It eliminates the open nature of competition.

brandensilva··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
If you look up the founder he has a bit of history of shady shiz with his past companies.

It isn't surprising to me they are going scorched earth now bending to the will of the fascist government.

brandensilva··on We mourn our craft
I'm probably a minority, but I've never loved dealing with syntax. The code itself always felt like a hindrance to me that reminded me that my brain was slowed down by my fingers. I get it though, it was tactical and it completed the loop. It was essential for learning I felt like despite eventually getting to a point where it slows you down the more senior you get.

AI has a ways to go before it's senior level if it ever reaches that level, but I do feel bad for juniors that survive this who never will have the opportunity to sculpt code by hand.

They called it project dawn which is telling what they have in mind with these layoffs.

brandensilva··on Web development is fun again
As you get deeper beyond the starter and bootstrap code it definitely takes a different approach to get value.

This is in part because context limits of large code bases and because the knowledge becomes more specialized and the LLM has no training on that kind of code.

But people are making it work, it just isn't as black and white.

brandensilva··on Mattermost restricted access to old messages after 10000 limit is reached
If this was intentional I'm going to uninstall it and encourage people never to use it. This is ridiculous.
brandensilva··on US blocks all offshore wind construction, says reason is classified
Boggles my mind a bit given much of the oil companies own the new renewable tech too. Why not keep investing in the future.
brandensilva··on JetBlue flight averts mid-air collision with US Air Force jet
Amazing how bad this has gotten under this administration. They have turned the air into a free for all match.
brandensilva··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
I figured this would happen given how crap Roombas have been since they fired or lost all their engineering talent years ago.

So I went with a roborock since it is superior but completely blocked it from ever communicating outside my home.

Works great, there are plenty of ways to modify roborock vacuums and load up other software even.

brandensilva··on UK House of Lords attempting to ban use of VPNs by anyone under 16
They just won't stop. We needed to have laws in place to prevent digital IDs being continuously pushed on people because the powers that be want total control of all information.

It's happening in the US now under the guise of AI data centers for consumers but I suspect it will be instead used to surveillance everyone who doesn't agree with the fascist government. This is Larry Ellison's public vision but Musk and Thiel also play a role.

brandensilva··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
Sure, but Netflix is the non-nepotism and non-cronyism option. I'll take that over the corruption we are witnessing right before our eyes with free markets disappearing.
brandensilva··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
The dark side of all this is a propaganda network.

The government and who runs it should not be in business I'm sorry. This isn't free markets, it's manipulation and corruption.

brandensilva··on Microsoft has a problem: lack of demand for its AI products
Useless Clippy all over again. At least Clippy stayed in his lane and could be turned off.
brandensilva··on Duplication Isn't Always an Anti-Pattern
I feel AI does decent at fixing the dupes and consolidating it as one instance. Abstractions can have far deeper connections and embeddings making it really hard to undo and reform but to each their own on what works for them.
brandensilva··on Duplication Isn't Always an Anti-Pattern
I have to agree, it's much easier to remove and consolidate duplicative work than unwind a poor abstraction that is embedded everywhere.

And I think it's easy to see small companies lean on the duplication because it's too easy to screw up abstractions without more engineering heads involved to get it right sometimes.

brandensilva··on What Is Generative UI?
I've heard from users they are burnt out on the UI many apps support. Buggy components everywhere across web, mobile, etc. e.g I can confirm that QuickBooks mobile app has so many bugs still in it for example and it's like 1/10th their web app.

I know personally I hit buggy forms and UI way more than I should preventing me from proceeding.

So I think there is an opportunity to instead have n permutations in natural language where the interface is consistent towards how the user inputs, it will just be up to the developers to support some UI for confirmation and structuring more complex input within chat itself. The biggest issue will be become discovery of what you can and cannot do without stationary UIs hinting at capabilities.

Anyways we are in new territory so it will be interesting how this plays out.i like to think of it as on demand UI but curious how others are toying with this paradigm.

We are testing a mostly display only interface for output where the majority of input comes in from chat and chat UI components right now just to see how this would work in practice.

brandensilva··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
I thought I was the youngest but I was 16. You win.

How old are you now? Did th vaccine help your symptoms?

brandensilva··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
Well sounds like I'm the youngest around here. I got it when I was 16/17. Honestly I kind of forgot about it for awhile but have weird nerve pain sometimes when I'm stressed now that I'm 41 so I assume it still lingers in me.

Looking to find out more about the vaccine and it's impacts on existing shingle victims.

brandensilva··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
I ended up getting shingles when I was 17. Terrible and rare I heard but for the most part I've never had any major outbreaks since then.

I wasn't aware the shingles vaccine starves off nerve pain. I've noticed more nerve pain with pins and needles and neuropathy now that I'm 41 which I assume is what you are talking about. I used to think I was getting pre-diabetic before this as I wasn't aware of nerve flare ups being a thing given how young I was when I found out.

Has there not been any studies around this with those with shingles taking the vaccine and freeing them from their symptoms? First time I've heard this.

brandensilva··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Now I'm envisioning WB movie pass combined with streaming subscriptions. The business models can get quite funky in this paradigm.
brandensilva··on UniFi 5G
They have always been stuck between prosumer, pro business, and enterprise.

They have tried to go subscription based licensing but that can be conflicting for companies who just want decent reliable network gear in all the above market segments.

I fit in the prosumer category and have about $10,000 in gear and while it's great for my needs I don't see myself ever spending money for network gear subscriptions.

brandensilva··on Cloudflare was down
The seed has been planted. It will take awhile for others to fill the void. Still the big players see this as an opportunity to steal market share if Cloudflare cannot live up to their reputation.
brandensilva··on Cloudflare was down
The irony is they support rolling out incrementally with some of their products for deployment.

They need that same mindset for themselves in config/updates/infra changes but probably easier said than done.

brandensilva··on X's new country-of-origin feature reveals many 'US' accounts to be foreign-run
One of the many reasons why I try and bombard myself with different views and perspectives. Foreign vs domestic. Left vs right. Personal vs official.

I don't do this with every topic unless I'm interested in discussing something just so I'm more informed just to reduce bias.

brandensilva··on AGI fantasy is a blocker to actual engineering
Quantum compute is my guess. Being able to switch entire models at atomic speeds will give the perception of intelligence at least. There is still a lot there that will need to be figured out between now and then.
