brainfire··on Signal issue: “Request for contacts uses creepy wording”
Moxie has written "people [...] expect contact discovery to be automatic in their social apps." The only way for it to be automatic is to access your contacts.

This app is designed for those people, not "cryptonerds" (his word), and this is one of the concessions made to provide that ease of use.

brainfire··on Probe of leaked U.S. NSA hacking tools examines operative’s ‘mistake’
Ah, but now some people on the internet think they made a mistake. That's priceless.
brainfire··on How Palantir Is Taking Over New York City
Sorry, it's hyperbole.
brainfire··on Google backtracks on privacy promise with messaging service Allo
That is how Allo works.
brainfire··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
Wouldn't that still be a problem without a union?
brainfire··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
You're describing a problem with the prosecutor's office, not the police union.
brainfire··on When Blind People Do Algebra, the Brain's Visual Areas Light Up
They're working on it- https://www.braininitiative.nih.gov/
brainfire··on Valve Bans Game Publisher After It Sues Players That Gave It Bad Steam Reviews
Are there any platforms with a policy like what you're suggesting?
brainfire··on Tesla dropped by Mobileye for “pushing the envelope in terms of safety”
Just for context, Sebastian Anthony is the editor of Ars Technica UK.
brainfire··on Edward Snowden makes 'moral' case for presidential pardon
Clearance is not a blanket authorization to access classified information- only information you require access to for your position.

Lapsed clearance is even less applicable, obviously.

brainfire··on GitLab Master Plan
Yup, the documentation sufficiently covered our case- we needed the front-end to be Apache httpd for our SSO, and there were steps (and example httpd configs) to substitute it in for the nginx in the omnibus package.
brainfire··on Facebook Collaborating with Israeli Government on What Should Be Censored
Your first point is unrelated to the topic.

Your second point is unrelated to the topic and runs counter to the opinion of the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the International Court of Justice.

brainfire··on Millennials Don't Care About Owning Cars, and Car Makers Can't Figure Out Why
"demonstrated by the fact fewer take a driving licence"

That's not actually demonstrated in the article, read again.

brainfire··on Millennials Don't Care About Owning Cars, and Car Makers Can't Figure Out Why
The article asserts this, but doesn't support it. It's got a statistic for the current rate, but for the past it basically says "back in MY day we were EXCITED to get our licenses."
brainfire··on Courage
Hope you don't plan on using the ones in the box with any non-apple product (or even any apple product without a lightning port)
brainfire··on The OPM Data Breach [pdf]
Not all of them. For example, the reported risk to CIA agents in US embassies in China was that they would suspiciously not be in the leaked data like actual State dept staff would be.

Apparently the Defense investigators (DSS) merged into OPM in 2004- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Security_Service

brainfire··on Facebook Backs Down on Censoring ‘Napalm Girl’ Photo
Even if it's executed in the brain of a human content screener, it's still an algorithm- if you want it to be consistent, it has to be documented and clearly communicated to the screeners.
brainfire··on The OPM Data Breach [pdf]
I believe Defense had their own, parallel system, so it may not be a given that you're in the leak.
brainfire··on Courage
How many $9 adapters (that will never work with a non-Apple device) does it take to admit this is a downgrade from the user perspective?
brainfire··on Courage
So? Unless I can wear the case on my head to charge them while I use them it doesn't help.
brainfire··on VotePlz – The Easiest Way to Vote
It's ridiculous and patronizing to suggest anyone "loses the right to complain" because they've participated in the system in a way you don't personally approve of. I've always been irritated by this position as applied to people who don't vote, but it's even worse to suggest your choice of candidate can invoke it. What's next, you lose the right to complain if your candidate wins? If you vote Democrat? If you haven't consecutively voted in every election? If you didn't run yourself?
brainfire··on Courage
What makes you think it's headphones, much less the same set, being used in all of those locations?
brainfire··on Courage
Which last 5 hours, and also can't be charged while in use.

I guess you could buy two pairs and swap them out...?

brainfire··on iPhone 7
The same way they use durable glass and don't cover broken glass under the warranty.
brainfire··on How Google obliterated my 4 year old Chrome extension featuring 24k+ users
That's interesting, because I've spoken to two Google support reps on the phone in the last two years (related to chrome os and their music service.) They must be so bad at customer support they can't even employ zero people properly.
brainfire··on Syslog is terrible
Can you summarize how he "[broke] desktops with PulseAudio"? From my perspective as an end user it didn't seem to go badly at all. Was I insulated by my distribution maintainers?
brainfire··on Canadian surgeons urge people to throw out bristle BBQ brushes
The answer to this depends on information not present in the article, and is probably not possible to answer without an actual lawsuit. Are the manufacturers taking reasonable steps to avoid the problem? If so they're probably not responsible.

If there are internal emails at the company saying "well our testing shows it might kill people but we'll save 2 cents per brush if we accept weaker wire attachments" then sure. I doubt it's that clear cut.

brainfire··on Paid $75k to Love a Brand on Instagram – Is It an Ad?
If it's a genuine endorsement then money wouldn't be changing hands.
brainfire··on 90% of software developers in the US work outside Silicon Valley
Denver is especially high too.
brainfire··on How Nextdoor reduced racist posts
That's not really what they're relying on. They're pointing out at the time of submission that race alone is not a useful description.
