bradjohnson··on Why Every City Feels the Same Now
I don't think I'll spend too much time in a discussion about tone with someone who talks so grossly about women as you did in the sibling comment.
bradjohnson··on Why Every City Feels the Same Now
The way this is written comes across as very conceited. Do you truly believe that everyone is a sheep but you based on the clothes they throw on before a university lecture?
bradjohnson··on Using 'this' incorrectly in C#
In addition to static imports, static fields and functions that belong to the instantiated class are not members of the current object.
bradjohnson··on Using 'this' incorrectly in C#
You're advocating using base.foo() rather than this.foo() which is not equivalent behaviour and is bad advice.
bradjohnson··on Any claim without a URI should be treated as suspicious
Probably because the blog url does as well: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2020/07/any-claim-without-a-uri-sho...
bradjohnson··on Advice to new managers: don't joke about firing people
I may be wrong because it is worded unclearly, but I think the first is referring to the magnitude by which men and women are affected, i.e. those that are affected, be they men or women, experience the same impact to their self esteem/worth. The second is referring to the fact that women are more frequently affected by it.
bradjohnson··on Can 1/3 and 1/3 = 2/6? It seemed so
I would avoid multiplication entirely and say that if you are combining tables, you need to update the bottom with the new number of total students. So something like:

  (T1 girls) + (T2 girls) 1 + 1
  _______________________ = _____
  (T1 total) + (T2 total) 3 + 3
I think that's more intuitive than averages, and would still work if the tables were of different sizes.
bradjohnson··on Show HN: SHA-256 Animation
Feynman also said: "Hell, if I could explain it to the average person, it wouldn't have been worth the Nobel prize."

Ideas take time to digest and it's not accurate to say that if someone leaves a room not understanding what you've just shown them, you don't understand it yourself.

bradjohnson··on Show HN: SHA-256 Animation
I realize it's not what you're saying, but I don't like the idea that if you can't teach something to others, you don't understand it yourself. Teaching is a skill and it's something that I am aware that I struggle with. I can explain something in great detail to a captive audience and understand it myself personally, but teaching is about getting others to engage with the ideas you're presenting and identifying and elaborating on parts that they don't understand.

Given the content of knowledge sharing sessions that I sit through and the convoluted nature of some of them, I wish that people recognized that presenting information is not all that is required to teach. You can understand something perfectly, but teach it horribly.

bradjohnson··on US oil prices turn negative as demand dries up
What would stop you from doing that with any unwanted garbage?
bradjohnson··on CS 007: Personal Finance for Engineers – Stanford University 2017-20
The bank doesn't, really, they own your debt. The amount that you owe the bank does not increase or decrease with the value of your property.
bradjohnson··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
Every time someone on HN says "you don't need x, just do a, then b, then c and you'll get something similar" I'm reminded of this comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9224
bradjohnson··on Toyota is trying to put solar panels on a Prius to charge battery during the day
> Yes, but when you show them why those ideas can't work, using numbers and science, they abandon those ideas.

This is empirically not true: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.357...

bradjohnson··on Why Workers Without College Degrees Are Fleeing Big Cities
It's strange to hear someone tell people making less money that they're too 'smug' about living in a less universally desirable part of the world.
bradjohnson··on Bullshitters: Who Are They and What Do We Know about Their Lives? [pdf]
If the ones that are buying that shit don't know enough about how it works, it's not that difficult for a bullshitter to make the implausible sound plausible.
bradjohnson··on Pig brains partially revived four hours after death
It's very weird to think that people would even care enough about a dead person to single out your brain for "payback". Even weirder to think that these people would somehow be in power.
bradjohnson··on Dogs demonstrate the existence of an epileptic seizure odour in humans
Dogs don't need a chemical to make them bark.
bradjohnson··on Marriott CEO shares post-mortem on last year's hack
I think that something like a query for hundreds of millions of records that also required pagination for the exact number of records returned is anomalous and not something that their application would do.
bradjohnson··on Marriott CEO shares post-mortem on last year's hack
Doesn't make sense to query the db for a count of the number of records that are returned. You can figure that out from the result set inside your application.
bradjohnson··on What We Learned from Analyzing 100M Bugs
Yep, that clears up my confusion. Thanks
bradjohnson··on What We Learned from Analyzing 100M Bugs
I think the y axis: "% Bugs" in Fig. 1 has an incorrect scale. It doesn't add to 100%.

Also, it doesn't seem consistent with the claim: "Bugs discovered through Instabug are most likely to be resolved within 24 hours of being reported"

bradjohnson··on Twitter urges users to change passwords after computer 'glitch'
Pretty obviously "shared" given the context.
bradjohnson··on If you’re not a Prime member, Amazon won’t sell you "The Last Jedi"
That's a stretch. Even then, the analogy would only work if they stocked "Costco Open" with premium products and then if you had one in your cart, they tacked on the membership fee to your total price.
bradjohnson··on Sex workers fear violence as US cracks down on online ads: 'Girls will die'
If your brand of feminism has you comparing adult women to children incapable of deciding what is best for themselves, I think you've lost the point somewhere.
bradjohnson··on Sex workers fear violence as US cracks down on online ads: 'Girls will die'
Adult women are not helpless children and I believe that any societal pressure that they might feel to pursue a damaging lifestyle can be dealt with before any punishment for exercising bodily autonomy should ever be considered.
bradjohnson··on Keras reimplementation of "One pixel attack for fooling deep neural networks"
In the sources of the single pixel paper I found a reference to a prior work which does this: http://www.shivakasiviswanathan.com/CVPR17W.pdf
bradjohnson··on Adopting a more active lifestyle could benefit your personality decades from now
I get what you mean. I have a simple gym in my apartment complex that probably saves me about 5 minutes in transition from going to the gym that I paid for a membership to. I end up only using my gym membership about once a week because I don't feel like taking the 5 minutes to make use of the extra equipment that I am paying money to use.
bradjohnson··on Adopting a more active lifestyle could benefit your personality decades from now
Yeah, I'm currently trying to switch my workouts to the morning, which has been giving me some difficulty because I'm too used to my schedule. Thanks for the info, I'll be a little stricter with shifting my schedule now.
bradjohnson··on Adopting a more active lifestyle could benefit your personality decades from now
Out of curiosity (because I would like to organize my day to be able to fit 2 hours of exercise each day) how is your typical day structured? Between work, commute, personal projects, grocery shopping, appointments, cooking, and sleep, I barely have enough time to fit 1 hour/day 3-4 times a week. Weekends are the exception, but I'd like to be able to have more flexible time during the week.
bradjohnson··on Ending Bitcoin Support
If the miners are all gone, there's nothing to stop malicious parties from doing 51% attacks and making the entire thing not only valueless, but also completely unreliable.

At least when you give a person a gold bar, you know that they now have the gold bar.
