bradj··on Economic collapse has pushed families who live in Orlando’s motels to the brink
Really powerful piece. It points out a significant coordination problem that comes with low income multi-family real estate. How can you ensure that enough people pay rent, so that the owner can keep the lights on?

In normal circumstances you can replace people who don't pay rent, but under current circumstances, I don't know if there are enough folks around who can fill that gap.

bradj··on Journalists aren’t the enemy of the people. But we’re not your friends either
I think the prima facie case for journalists is incredibly strong, even for some of the more questionable types of journalism mentioned in the comments like explanatory journalism, narrative reporting and opinion.

I think a lot of the problem today has to do with media literacy: a lack of knowledge among casual readers/viewers about the purpose of journalism, and the difference between the various kinds (and what those kinds allow in an ethical/professional sense).

However, I don’t think the conversation ends there. Given that environment, institutions need to do a better job supporting journalism in a way that reflects that knowledge. I don’t know if it’s possible for a paper that calls itself “the paper of record” to include an opinion section, or even lifestyle reporting, and maintain its “objective” journalistic reputation.

Opinion, interpretative, and explanatory journalism is probably best life to the magazines, or websites that explicitly share a particular editorial viewpoint. The Economist is a great example of this type of institution.

bradj··on Why it’s hard to kill the Bloomberg terminal (2019)
A missing piece of this article is a discussion of Bloomberg’s more or less successful competitors today: Refinitiv, Factset, Alphasense, CapIQ, Tradeweb, MarketAxxess, Enverus
bradj··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
I had this exact same feeling.
bradj··on Vessel Finder
Yep. Every oil trader and company is monitoring trade routes for insights. It’s almost a rite of passage for new analysts and interns to start playing with vessel data to look for new patterns.
bradj··on Amazon sues former AWS marketing VP Brian Hall after he takes Google Cloud job
The tech industry just needs to take a cue from the finance industry and standardize garden leave.
bradj··on Variolation
Having "candidate vaccines" is very different from having a "vaccine". Variolation is a reasonable alternative to the lack of a known, effective vaccine.
bradj··on Analysis: Coronavirus set to cause largest ever annual fall in CO2 emissions
> Even this would not come close to bringing the 1.5C global temperature limit within reach. Global emissions would need to fall by more than 6% every year this decade – more than 2,200MtCO2 annually – in order to limit warming to less than 1.5C above pre-industrial temperatures.

Incredible. Half the world will be shut down for 2-3 months and that won't be enough to slow global temperature increases.

bradj··on How the Virus Got Out
This is excellent journalism.
bradj··on Mamba Mentality (2018)
If the ball is at the top of the key, it can sometimes be easy to get away with something in the corner on the weak side. The Trail/Center might both be paying attention to the ball.

Most of the blind spots occur when the ball is transitioning coverage areas or when the Lead (baseline ref) initiates a rotation.

bradj··on Omnieq: Credit Spread Scanner
Raw data is available directly from the exchanges. You can also go through other market data companies, like Refinitiv, to source the data and some infrastructure.
bradj··on Ending Legacy Admissions at Johns Hopkins
It would be interesting to study the effect of this on donations and the endowment. There should be some measurable effect. Additionally, if there is an effect on donations and the endowment, it would be interesting to study the effect that that change has on endowment payouts. Does lower donations, due to lower legacy admissions result in less funds for University operations?
bradj··on Where do individual contributors go once they peak?
My experience is that energy companies, especially the international oil majors, are very good at doing this. Employees rotate in and out of management and IC positions throughout their careers as either part of climbing the ladder or just leveraging their skills in a new way.
bradj··on Shopify CEO says long hours aren't necessary for success
Dinner is often literally work when you are meeting with clients, partners, employees, etc.
bradj··on The Bloomberg Terminal, Explained
And Eikon is the Visual Studio-like competitor.
bradj··on Google's Monopoly-Based Foreign Policy
I don't see how this is a controversy. Turkey made a legal judgement, and Google decided the cost of compliance was too high so instead of thwarting the law and risk legal liability they retreated from the country.

The threat of Monopoly by Google in Turkey is gone - so congrats? You shouldn't force a company to provide you the opportunity to by their product (outside of certain circumstances regarding protected classes in the US).

bradj··on Green Bonds Without the Bonds
Absolutely amazing. If there is money to be rung out of the system, financiers will find it.

> A zero-coupon bond with zero redemption at maturity.” There is something final about that sentence; when you get to a zero-coupon bond with zero redemption at maturity, you know you have come to the end of financial engineering. It is the creation of financial value out of the absence of cash flows. You will give Denmark money for this certificate, and in exchange you will get a certificate. What will you get for the certificate? Well, you will get the certificate.

bradj··on The President's Own as a Model for the Marine Corps Cyber Auxillary
"Now imagine the Marine Corps Cyber Auxiliary cast in the image of the President’s Own. Attracted by the prestige, the mission, and the powerful capabilities of the Marine Corps’ most elite cyber unit, cyber experts join through the President’s Own process. Many of these cyber experts have exploited and defended computer systems since age eight, apprenticed under the best cyber professionals, and worked for hacking groups or top cyber security firms. After passing through initial offensive and defensive cyber challenges online, the most successful candidates come to Marine Corps Base Quantico for a full day of testing and interviews. If they meet the demanding standards required by the Marine Corps, they sign a four-year contract “for duty with the U.S. Marine Corps Cyber Auxiliary only” at the E-6 pay level with full benefits."

This seems like an effective approach, except for restricting pay to the E-6 level. After adding in BAH, the pay comes out to around $70k (assuming they are based in the DC area). Not sure if prestige and honor is going to cover the difference between that and the market price for a software engineer.

bradj··on Hong Kong Exchanges Bids $39B to Take over London Stock Exchange
Exchanges can have something that looks like Monopoly power when you need access to their data. Yes, certain instruments trade everywhere and on different exchanges, but when LSE/NYM/ICE etc is considered THE benchmark for XYZ contract, you have to buy their feed to get the best pricing data.
bradj··on Hong Kong Exchanges Bids $39B to Take over London Stock Exchange
It looks like this deal is actually conditional on LSE dropping the Refinitiv deal.
