I highly recommend Mixmax (admittedly biased; co-founder here :-P). It offers a ton of free features beyond just scheduling emails. You also get unlimited email tracking for free and can put message enhancements in your email (things like link previews, polls, surveys, meeting invites).

Meteor is almost there. It's inherently isomorphic and its Blaze templating engine (a fork of Handlebars) can run both server and client side. They just need an easy way to render those templates from routes defined on the server side.

At Mixmax, our mission is to do the impossible with email: to make it as rich, interactive, and developer-friendly as the web. You’ll be working closely with our expert team to build Mixmax, from its core infrastructure to its custom front end. This includes architecting systems to integrate with external services, building a full-featured web editor, and choreographing email systems and protocols. We’ll leave it largely up to you to evolve the stack as you see fit. We eagerly participate in open source development and will encourage you to do the same.

Yup! That's what we're working on a Mixmax - an SDK that makes embedding rich interactivity in email easy. Best of all, there is nothing proprietary about the HTML email it produces. Mixmax is a more general email "apps" platform, so expect to see many more "apps" like this on the way. Today you can send polls, Q&A surveys, tables, slideshows and more, directly in email.

Thanks for the thoughtful writeup and great work on Streak. We're big fans. You're also fortunate you were notified by the Gmail team!

On the content_security_policy property in the manifest file, thanks for pointing that out. The documentation is a bit ambiguous: "In general, CSP works as a black/whitelisting mechanism for resources loaded or executed by your extensions." I'll can revise our post.

I'd rather not eval the script contents since we lose the ability to get stack traces.
